Chapter 1 by chocolate470
I would say that the evening skies bore bleak, ominous clouds with booming thunder and a lightning strike or two in between, far from it. The night stood perfectly with a full moon and a small sprinkling of stars contrasted against the noise and lights from the busy city traffic below Evangeline's fifth-floor apartment. The storm, however, came from the ongoing, intense, heated back and forth between the two. Indeed, Evangeline's move to Arizona created this chasm that had not diminished. Their last exchange created innuendo through a cold cell. The only difference this time was video chat.
But why call now, she thought, if it was merely to carry on the same disagreement from a couple of months before? She allowed him the space and time to move past his anger while her new workspace and client base occupied her tight schedule.
"It was so easy for you to leave," he repeated, dragging his manicured fingers along his blonde mane. His gorgeous blue eyes lacked their usual warmth, more accusatory than supportive; fiery and unapologetic. His exquisite body sat rigid, unyielding. Even in anger, he conveyed a certain aesthetic unlike any other man in her life.
"Optics aside, this is a work-related move." She admitted her delivery of the news might not have been the greatest. "It is not about us or where our relationship needs to proceed. Arguing over the same issue voids effective communication."

"That's where you are wrong, Counselor. I'm effectively communicating my displeasure about our new arrangement. You are over 2000 miles away!"
"Please get it through that thick skull of yours that I am not running away from us or entertaining another man in my life."
"I haven't seen or heard from you during these last couple of months."
"I haven't seen you either," she countered. "You could have hopped on your private jet and visited me, but I get it. I truly do." She took in a deep breath. "There is so much going on in your life that such a move is unwise and impractical. Babe, all I am asking is for a little patience."
The room shifted into a muted silence. They had reached an impasse and words failed them. Evangeline took a mental note of his attire. Compared to her t-shirt and shorts, he appeared dressed for a casual evening out - a black tailored shirt paired with grey chinos.
Humph, she thought.

She loosed her hair bun, shaking out her long tresses. Victor enjoyed the moment regardless of his trepidation. Her beauty forever captivated him. She needn't do much to set any man's heart aflame. He would do anything for her if she only asked. Sometimes he sensed that she chose to bear the weight of the world alone.
"Babe, talk to me. Why do I have this horrible impression that there is something you are not telling me."
Evangeline balked at this notion, "There is nothing to share. All I want is your trust and encouragement. You and I have walked a long road together and apart...."
"Not you and I," he instantly corrected. "You and my alter ego...Todd Manning."
"What?" Evangeline folded her arms in disgust.
"I cannot compete with a ghost, Evangeline. You shared every truth, secret, doubt, and fear with Todd. I asked you one simple question..."
"Whether you be Todd or Victor, you know all of me! When you were transitioning. I asked you not to shut me out, and you did." She lowered her eyes. He gazed at her, stunned. "Sure, it bothered me, but again I let it go for your sake."
"Did you truly let it go?"
"Certainly. You needed to find yourself. I was powerless to change the fact that the Todd I knew was gone forever, and we all had to move on. Honey, I understand it affected you more than any of us." She sniffled, wiping a couple of tears away.
"It's not that I didn't need you but..." He hung his head low recalling those awful memories. He was mad at the world. Irene dealt him a cruel hand. She effectively created a clone of his brother. He was left unsure of who he was and which road to take. He also lost the best things in his life - Starr and Jack. Sam was his one certainty. The light at the end of his dark tunnel but had he failed to remember his best friend?
"I wanted to be your shoulder to lean on. I saw it as an opportunity to learn and appreciate this new you, a new presence in my life. Now we could pursue a relationship devoid of all the baggage and surrounding drama," her voice trailed off. "I selfishly wanted it to be a fresh steps enroute to who we were meant to be."
Questions started bombarding his mind. Did he do the right thing? Was it necessary to push aside your friendship in the name of protecting her? Did his refusal to let her into his confidence cause this standoffish approach towards him?
"Sweetheart, I'm sorry...please forgive me."
"Victor, it's late. I seriously need to decompress. We can discuss this another time, okay."
"Sure," he quickly agreed.
That was it. She logged off and his screen went dark.
After the link ended, Evangeline crawled into bed and fell into a deep sleep. Victor, however, stared at the blank screen for a long time until an incoming call distracted him.
"I know what I said, but not tonight. You don't need to ask why. I'm simply not in the mood for company."
Chapter 2 by chocolate470
A couple of weeks later.
Jessica exited the elevator in a floral sundress, sandals, and a Gucci shoulder bag, her blonde hair coiffed into a wispy updo.
"Good morning, Tina; where is my favorite Uncle Victor?" Jessica asked as she strolled up to the assistant desk.
"Somewhere," came a bemused response. Tina's green eyes twinkled behind her rimmed glasses. Jessica gave her a knowing look. "He went out a while ago for coffee."
"Sure," Jessica stated in disbelief.
Her grey-blue eyes scanned the office setting with its art deco and sleek glass paneling. The main offices and meeting areas lay at the back, while the front featured compact desks, whiteboards, and digital screens. VLJ employed roughly around ten to fifteen employees. Jessica recognized most of the in-house faces, although others were freelancers.
"Victor!" She caught sight of him as soon as he stepped off the elevator. He donned black denim jeans, a white dress shirt, and white leather sneakers with coffee in hand.
"I told you so," a vindicated Tina expressed from behind her workstation. Jessica smirked while Tina shrugged her shoulders and afterward answered an incoming call.
"I could say that I am surprised."
"You know why I am here," she replied, folding her arms.
He quickly ushered her up a short staircase into his spacious office. It featured a solid dark wood desk at its center with his laptop, files piled into a neat display, and framed photos of Evangeline, Sam, Jack, and Starr. Behind the desk was a leather executive chair with two armchairs at the front and one on the side. A cabinet with books and periodicals stood at the back wall while abstract art decorated the remaining walls.
He stretched forward his right hand and said, "Have a seat."
Jessica eased down in one of the armchairs. Victor took his seat and dialed his assistant.
"Tina, please hold all my calls until I say otherwise."
"As you wish, Mr Lord, remember you have a staff meeting in the next twenty minutes."
"Of course, but if I am not ready, Ryan can carry on without me."
"Yes, Mr. Lord."
"Now, where were we?"
"Cassie informed me that you ghosted her."
Victor slowly sipped his coffee. "This Caffe Americano is very delicious if I knew..."
"Victor be serious."
He set aside his cup. "Hold on; I told you not to do this."
"You agreed."
"If I remember correctly, I vehemently disagreed. Besides, I do not think you quite understand my taste in women. This Cassie is a real piece of work. How could I ghost a person when I never said boo in the first place? Your friend is delusional." Jessica stifled a laugh. "Jess, I told you my plate is full with Sam, this business..."
"Your novel."
"Well, that is on a bit of a hiatus..."
"Lost your muse, I see."
"Huh?"
"Evangeline," she interjected, pursing her lips.
Victor leaned forward and asked, "Am I your pet project?"
"Of course not!" Jessica yelled, her eyes wide with disbelief. "Pet project implies that you are an object and not my beloved Uncle, whom I care very much about. I see a man holding on to this pipe dream of you and Evangeline sailing off into the sunset..."
"Don't," He balled his right hand into a fist and slammed it hard on the desk. His face flushed crimson, eyebrows knitted together, jaws clenched. He pointed an accusatory finger. "Evangeline and I take pretty good care of ourselves without others interfering. You and Vicki need to back the hell off!"
"Okay, okay," Jessica held her hands up in surrender. Her face went through a kaleidoscope of emotions. She rarely saw this side of him and instantly knew she crossed the line. Evangeline was a touchy subject.
Fairly, soon his anger subsided. He rose from his seat and sat by the edge of the desk with his back turned. He tried his best to calm down, gazing at his palms and thinking. Jessica was one of the few people who stood by him through thick and thin. It was important not to chase away his remaining supporters.
"I am sorry my anger got the best of me."
She stood next to him. "And I get that I am the last person that should be giving out relationship advice. I have been married and divorced how many times?" They shared a chuckle.
"Still it's great to have someone in my corner for a change. I have not been the best Uncle, especially during my "Todd" days."
"You performed as expected and did it perfectly for eight years," she replied with an embrace and kiss on the cheek. "I want to see you happy."
"You also believe I am hitting my head against the same wall." Jessica chose to remain quiet. "I can't let go, at least not yet," he said softly. "I hope you understand and allow me to live my new life."
"I get that it has been difficult." She leaned her head on his shoulder.
"It's hard not to look back and dream. Irene altered my entire world - face, character, identity. Todd Manning became my core existence. His family, business, and values were my own. I don't recall anything about my life before, yet it is what it is, and I must move on. Thankfully, I have Jack and Sam."
"And me."
"And you," he agreed with a smile.
"I will see you later, Victor. You and Sam should stop by for dinner sometime."
"Jess."
"Yes."
"This is off-topic, but I may have a freelance job for you. Interested?"
"I'm game. What is it about?"
Victor pulled out a small manila folder from his desk drawer and gave it to her.
"Read the contents very carefully, then get back to me."
"Sounds covert," she said sheepishly.
"Let's just say I have been sitting on this story for a while now. It involves a lot of investigative work. At times, you must be very discreet." Jessica nodded. "Should you choose to accept it, I will make it worth your while."
"Chi-Ching."
"Possibly for the both of us," said Victor with a wry smile.
Suddenly, Victor's buzzing cell phone captured his attention.
"Hello.......Yes, I am Sam's father......Tell him I am on my way."
"What is wrong with Sam?" asked Jessica, her face etched with concern.
"He is not feeling well. I need to take him home. You can stay here and review the paperwork."
"Okay. I hope Sam feels better."
"I am sure he will. I am just grateful it's not something major."
Located in the heart of downtown Phoenix, S & L Arizona was surrounded by universities, museums, and a vibrant art scene. S & L New York dwarfed its office structure, personnel, and client base. However, Evangeline and Ellen's outstanding skills and job performance brought a renewed focus and success in terms of exposure. Yet exposure can bring its own unforeseen consequences.
An upbeat Ellen stepped into the office, prepared to whisk her friend away on a much-needed lunch break. These days, Evangeline was clocking in much more hours than her, and the strain was evident. She often complained of fatigue and sleep deprivation. Suddenly, Erin, one of their legal assistants burst from Evangeline's office door.
"I suggest you do not go in there right now."
"Why?" Ellen asked very puzzled.
"Just thread lightly," Erin replied, without explaining further. "I am going for my lunch." She massaged her forehead and said, "It has been a long day."
Ellen entered the office to see an animated Evangeline furiously talking away, clad in a navy blue sheath dress, black pumps, diamond studded earrings, and a pendant necklace, hair styled in a low ponytail with minimal makeup. Her office featured the usual bookshelf stocked with legal texts, a desk stacked with pending files, a laptop and phone, chairs, and the perfect view of downtown Phoenix.
"Ace, I have had it up to here with your shenanigans. I'm your lawyer, not your girl from Club Bizzo. It's time to grow up and stop relying on Daddy for everything. Have a good day!" She clicked off the phone and sighed deeply.
"Ace still stirring the pot."
"Oh, Ellen." There was light in her eyes again. Evangeline gave her a quick once-over. The bubbly brunette fitness routine meant anything looked great on her. Today it was a grey suit and flats. The only pop of color on her face was the red lipstick with her hair pulled back in a sculpted chignon. Evangeline clasped her mouth. "I almost forgot about our scheduled lunch."
"What happened to that work-life balance?"
"Out the window, I guess," she replied, unable to hide her disappointment.
"What is going on with you and the Maslow case." Ellen's hazel eyes showed worry.
"Nothing much other than my client is being a complete bastard. I almost wish he had skipped out on bail."
"That bad huh."
"I think he enjoys it when I go off on him. I am this close to walking away from this case and asking another attorney to take over the reins. I have dealt with many narcissists in my life and career, but he takes the wedding cake."
Ellen burst out laughing. "I don't mean to laugh at your expense, but your description is too funny." Evangeline hardly smiled. She appeared lost in thought. "Something else on your mind?"
"Sometimes I wish I was back in New York. I would have a whole team to assist with this case. I can't do it all," she sighed in frustration.
"What about Erin?"
Evangeline's expression hardened. "What about her? Is she incapable of doing the research, or is she holding out on me?"
"Maybe it's all there is."
"Still, I sense there is more that I don't know. Sometimes, I believe my mind can't give up on an instinct; other times, I wish it would," she softly added.
Ellen speculated. "Are we still discussing work?"
"Work and life."
"Come on, Evangeline, let's get out of here. I'm starving for lunch, and we have much to discuss."
"I believe I will purchase a dartboard on our way back."
The two friends exited the office, chuckling at the thought of a few targets for that board.
Chapter 3 by chocolate470
Why did he choose to say "that name", Todd Manning? A name that causes me to sense an overwhelming loss. Haven't I grieved enough? Perhaps Victor was right to question my allegiance.
Evangeline put pen to paper, writing her thoughts within the lines of her daily journal. Victor's utterance of Todd's name set her mental recovery further back than she expected.
It shouldn't be this way. I believed this was all behind me. I am strong, self-assured, and yet adrift at the same time. How is this possible?
While Victor embarked on his journey of self-discovery, she entered a new life without Todd, that enigmatic personality who turned her world upside down - an interloper, all-or-nothing bastard, unique genius, and her absolute, genuine best friend.
"He would do anything and everything for me," she revealed.
Discarded bowls and plates from Evangeline's black bean soup Cuban sandwich combo and Ellen's steak sandwich matched with French onion soup remained idly in the center of the table, accompanied by remnants of two glasses of iced sodas.
Questions regarding Evangeline's exasperating client Aiden "Ace" Baxter were few. Ellen, however, could not be veered away or dissuaded from the fascinating personal life of her good friend. The details were too salacious for her not to question or dig further into the situation. Evangeline was all too willing to share.
"Every day was a grand adventure, whether good or bad. Our discussions were entertaining even if he ruffled my feathers a time or two." Her mouth curved into a smile, recalling those intense moments in time. "When I called him on it, he always sought my forgiveness, and I was powerless to stay mad at him no matter how hard I tried."
Ellen rested her chin on her left palm. "I feel like I am listening to a romantic audiobook." Evangeline grinned sheepishly. "It sounds like you were falling in love."
Evangeline sighed, knowing that she fought against it. "I did my best not to see Todd in that way. I feared what it would do to me in the long run. Drama plagued his life - Blair, the wife/ex-wife, Dorian, Spencer, and their children. Starr had a particular disdain towards me. She was totally against her father ever moving on to someone new, even if her parents brought out the worst in each other. Different scenes and actors kept buzzing in and out of his life. At times, it was total madness."
"Yet you two sought out each other."
Evangeline nodded in agreement. "Too many times to count. We were like magnets and steel. Although, Blair wished we were oil and water."
"Now, how does your mind adjust? Victor has the same physical features except a different personality."
"That is why I hoped he did not shut...me...out!" Evangeline pushed aside her chair quickly, then leaned against the rail of Horton's balcony setting. The distinct sound of conversations, laughter, patrons, and staff milling around echoed here and there in the background. "He mistakenly believed that the great Evangeline could overcome the ghost of Todd Manning on her own. If we had gone through this process together, this conflict would not be burning deep within my soul."
Ellen slowly turned and gazed sympathetically at her friend. She was witnessing the conflict firsthand. Evangeline chewed on her bottom lip, massaging her neck and staring at the ornate tiled floor.
"I thought..."
"I thought so too." Evangeline forced a laugh.' "Better now than later, right?" She reclaimed her seat.
"Do you truly want this relationship? It appears more intense than any courtroom drama you and I have ever experienced."
"I cannot explain it, but yes, I do," she responded softly.
"The two of you need to talk it out and lay everything on the table."
Ellen is right, of course. Victor and I need a face-to-face conversation; let the chips fall where they may.
Victor, Paul, Jack, and Sam were all hanging out in the Penthouse "sky garage" This private garage was adjacent to the living room and housed Victor's Volvo XC40 and Lexus LC. Presently, Victor and Paul were gazing under the hood of the Volvo. Paul conscientiously removed the dipstick, looking intently at the indicators to determine the vehicle's oil level. The Volvo was due for servicing soon. Both men gave it a thorough inspection. Jack and Sam entertained themselves with a NASCAR racing arcade machine in the left corner of the garage. Victor promised them a trip to Funplex after lunch.
Victor's cell phone came to life. "Lynn is here. I'll be back."
"Don't you think you should clean yourself off?" Paul asked, giving him a once over.
Victor's hair appeared disheveled. There were grease stains on his face, shirt, and cargo pants. Victor wasn't sure if he was being sarcastic.
"She won't be staying long. She's just dropping off lunch courtesy of Timmy's."
"And Lynn happened to be around when you requested delivery?"
Victor shrugged. "I guess."
Paul left it alone and went back to the vehicle inspection. Even though he wasn't a trained, certified mechanic, he knew about the luxury vehicles in his care. He didn't want surprises when the car went for its scheduled maintenance.
"Hey Lynn," Victor greeted as he opened the front door.
She appeared cheerful in a floral dress, her hair flowing with loose curls, and her face almost makeup-free except for lip gloss.
"Hey yourself. It's been a while."
"Has it? I have been quite busy lately. Thanks for bringing lunch over." Lynn didn't respond but kept looking at him. "What?"
"Victor, have you looked at yourself lately?"
She grabbed a moist tissue from her bag and tried to wipe away some grease stains from his face. She barely succeeded.
Lynn shook her head. "What is it with men and cars?"
"Sometimes we like getting our hands dirty. Cars need maintenance just like other things in our lives."
"Like women?"
"I didn't say that," Victor immediately corrected.
He was ready to walk her out when Lynn hesitated.
"Victor, is it something I said or did? We are not talking or hanging out like we did before."
Victor sighed, "Would you want someone interfering in your personal life by placing your friend in the middle?"
"That is between you and Viki. You are not being fair to me or our friendship!"
"My sister is your boss and very persistent. I believe the best thing to do is take a step back."
"And here I thought Evangeline had a hand in this."
Victor let out a frustrated sigh. "Not you too, Lynn. How could you come to such a conclusion if Viki hasn't been running her mouth about Evangeline? You barely know her."
"FYI I can form my own opinion on Evangeline without Viki's input," Lynn replied, very annoyed. "Llanview is a small town, and people are always talking."
Victor hardly believed that explanation. "Look, it is best you don't say anything further. I still consider you a friend."
"Okay, I will see you around, right?" She gave him a small hug.
"Sure."
He watched her exit. He didn't have much time to think about it when he received a phone call.
"Hey, Jess. What's up?
"A lot. Victor, I'm not sure what I've gotten myself into by agreeing to this."
"Jess, if it is too much..."
"I get that I need to up my game in the news business, and this is the perfect case. It is both complicated and exhilarating. Victor..."
"Yeah."
"I believe you need to talk Evangeline."
"Why? What have you discovered?"
Chapter 4 by chocolate470
"Victor, I didn't expect you to get here this quickly," Jessica commented after he rushed into the Llanfair's home office.
An uneasy Jessica was dressed casually in blue jeans and a pink blouse. Her blonde strands clasped into a messy bun. She observed Victor gazing over his shoulder.
"Don't worry; Mom and the kids went out. I told her I needed to continue working on my "special project"."
"Did she ask any questions?"
"No, but I am certain she wanted to. You cannot avoid Mom forever. It is pretty childish if you ask me."
"Childish? Viki interfering in my relationship is mean girl behavior." Jessica rolled her eyes. "A sister should be supportive, not imposing. Advice is shared when requested, not the other way around. Plus, I know that she does not like Evangeline."
Jessica stared at him in disbelief. "That is not true."
"Ask her yourself; she won't deny it."
"I will when I see her," Jessica replied, settling on the sofa.
Victor relaxed and sat next to her. "Okay, let's get back to why I am here. The boys are waiting on me. I am taking them to Funplex. So..."
Jessica cut him off. "Victor, should I question how you came across this investigative journalism?"
"Just an acquaintance I knew who believed his late Father was tricked into a settlement agreement without going over all the specifics."
"Yet you were fully aware that it involved S & L."
"At first, I thought it merely a coincidence."
"And you still pressed forward. Victor!"
Victor gave her a knowing look. "There was money on the table. It was turning into a very huge story. This exposure would lead to other things far more than monetary."
"Evangeline could easily see this as you interfering in her life again, and not for the best."
He kissed his teeth. "What, the Todd Manning way of handling situations out of my control? A way of pulling her back in line."
"You know I didn't mean it that way. Everything is not always about your old life."
"Don't mind me. I'm just venting."
Jessica placed her left hand on his shoulder. "Uncle Victor, we could shelf this or just let it go."
"No, Jess, No!" Victor became adamant. "Personal issues aside, I can't allow S & L to walk away scot-free, leeching off this poor man rightful compensation."
Victor didn't realize it, but his words touched Jessica. The monetary gain wasn't his goal.
"Still, you need to contact Evangeline before it goes to print. I'm almost three-quarters of the way there."
Victor chuckled. "No matter the personality, I have a knack for getting in the way of my relationship with Evangeline."
It suddenly dawned on Jessica. "Is this why you decided to hand over the reins of this story?"
"Somewhat. It has been a complication that I couldn't shake. I tell you, Jess, countless times I wanted to back out, yet I held on, knowing this story needed to get out there. I had to find someone I could trust with background experience who could do the best investigative work."
Jessica leaned forward, clasping her head. "This story is a tangled web of deceit. Sharing it with the world may come at a high cost."
"So be it," he responded, almost defiantly lifting his eyes skyward. "My foot was already in the mire; why not jump in all the way."
***
The conference room of Baxter's Brokerage Consultancy provided the setting for this crucial meeting.
Evangeline certainly wanted to wipe that silly smirk off Aiden's face. He also kept tapping his fingers on the solid oak desk, causing her much consternation.
"Could you please stop that!" Evangeline crossed her arms and glared at him.
The drumming ceased, much to her relief. Today, her hair was styled in a rounded lob, which she occasionally pushed behind her ears. Her makeup remained neutral with just the added pop of burgundy lipstick. She wore a gray business suit with black pumps and a brown leather tote.
"You don't seem to get what the prosecutor is offering, and it's my duty...."
"I get it alright, and I won't go to jail," he stated between clenched teeth. He stood up, shaking his head.
Aiden possessed a chiseled face with a body to match. His hair was colored an ashy grey, and he wore a crisp, white dress shirt with dark blue jeans.
"This is a fair deal. You were driving recklessly, which resulted in the death of an innocent bystander."
His green eyes held her chocolate brown irises in a long, drawn-out stare. Evangeline's lips curved into a satisfied smile when he blinked.
"Do you understand that you are being charged with vehicular manslaughter, which is considered a Class 2 felony? The maximum sentence is twenty-one years."
"And you are one of the best lawyers that my Father's money can afford. That person's death was unintentional, and I am indeed sorry for his family's loss."
However, his words held no remorse. They just hung in the air briefly and fell flat to the floor. It was this callous attitude that would turn off prospective jurors. Was it wise to have him take the stand, she mentally pondered. Not without preparation, but Aiden wasn't the type to follow basic instructions.
"You know what, Ms. Williamson, I think you don't like me."
"What is there to like? I think you are a pompous, narcissistic egomaniac, but that is beside the point."
"Ouch," he replied with a devilish grin.
"After getting out on bail, I specifically instructed you to lay low and take it easy, but what do you do instead? You are out clubbing and making your presence known in all the wrong places. I didn't need to hire an investigator to find out your whereabouts. Your face is plastered all over gossip and social media websites."
"That's just business. A guy has to earn a living."
She understood, but not really. The business Aiden was involved in, club promotion, necessitated such. Reluctantly, she relaxed her position. There was an upcoming trial to prepare for.
"Ace...do follow my directives from now on. I hate surprises from my well-paying clients."
Evangeline carefully gathered her documents and returned them to her tote.
Aiden briefly stared at his fingers. "There will be no more surprises, Counselor," he quipped confidently.
"You better hope so because if I find one thing amiss..."
"I am this close Ms. Williamson," he snapped at her. His green eyes now appeared dark.
"To fire me? I dare you to do it. My ego has taken a hit a time or two."
His eyes returned to normal, and he offered her a wry smile. "If you weren't my lawyer..."
"You could see us falling in love, getting married, and having babies...Fat Chance!"
"Have a great rest of the day, Counselor."
"I can't say the same to you, Mr. Baxter. I'll contact you at the appropriate time, so be available."
Ace chuckled as she grabbed her leather tote and exited the room.
Later on at the office...
"So, how did it go?" Ellen eagerly questioned as soon as Evangeline stepped through the glass door.
"As expected, but what else is new? I think he wants to fire me," she said jokingly.
"That would be right up your alley."
"He won't because his Father still has faith in me. He is the one signing the checks."
The ladies strolled to her office; once inside, Evangeline set her bag on one of the armchairs.
"I've cleared most of my cases. Ace is the only holdout."
Ellen froze; her eyes blinked a few times.
"Ellen, you know how I feel. It's time. I want to go back to New York." Evangeline sighed heavily. "Stephens has to give me some clarity about this situation."
"Have you spoken to him?"
"Yes, and he keeps telling me to be patient." Evangeline gazed at the skyline outside her office window. "They have kept me in this location far past the time I expected. I understand you love it here, Ellen, but I sense they have left me here to rot with few prospects."
"Advancement in your career alongside your relationship with Victor...hmmm."
"Are you going there?"
"Yes I am," she smiled.
There was an unexpected knock at her door.
"Excuse me, I'm looking for Evangeline Williamson."
Were her ears deceiving her? "That voice..." They both spun around.
Evangeline's eyes widened, her jaw went slack, and her heart skipped a beat. Her entire body started to tingle. "Victor..."
"In the flesh, Beautiful," he said, slowly strolling into her office with a wide grin etched on his face.
His opened arms beckoned her, and she rushed into them. Ellen excused herself, pulling the door behind her, not that the two noticed.
"Hmmm...." She embraced him tighter, enjoying the feel of him in her arms as well as his masculine scent wafting around her. "You have perfect timing."
He pulled away slightly to gaze at her. His eyes carefully scanned her face, tracing his fingers along her hair, cheeks, and neckline. Her subtle perfume reminded him of running through a field of jasmine and lavender, calm and relaxing. "I've missed seeing and being around you." Those blue eyes conveyed an intense spark, and his voice mesmerized her. For that brief moment, she lost all track of time and space.
He couldn't wait any longer, leaning in and touching her soft lips against his. She closed her eyes, parting her lips, granting him further access. Both sensed the icy distance closing between them.
Chapter 5 by chocolate470
Reluctantly, he withdrew his lips from hers, untangling himself from her warm embrace, leaving Evangeline bewildered. The world around them sprang back to life-the muffled conversations of her colleagues outside alongside the faintest hum of downtown traffic. Then, of course, her phone started ringing. She kept looking at Victor, who inexplicably stood silently with his head bowed, eyes closed, and hands covering his mouth and nose. Her phone kept ringing.
"Mr. Baxter, sorry I could not see you after I met with Aiden...."
Victor opened his eyes to see her switch into lawyer mode as her phone conversation continued. Perhaps he was making much ado about nothing. Still, he did not know where to start and how to shake out the tension in his body. She seemed to be talking on her phone for ages, even though only a few minutes had passed.
"Yes Mr. Baxter, I understand perfectly."
Once the conversation ended, she stared at him with arms crossed. Victor not bringing her flowers should have been a dead giveaway. Those brown eyes so welcoming earlier now dared him to speak immediately.
"Evangeline, How can I say this? There is... there is... something I need...."
Evangeline hated this mood change.

"Victor, whatever you need to say, confess...I do not want to hear it right now," Evangeline stated firmly.
"But Evangeline..."
"No, Victor. All I want you to do for me is to take me back to Llanview."
Her demand threw him for a loop. "When?"
"Now." She grabbed her tote and strolled past him.
"Okay."
Victor meekly followed behind, muttering to himself, It was all going downhill.
She briefly stopped to talk with Ellen, who was eagerly waiting by her office door.
"So you have made up your mind?"
Evangeline recognized the sadness in her voice.
"Only your friendship made being here bearable, and I am eternally grateful."
"And what of your career?"
"I will cross that bridge. I hate when a company or anyone else puts me in an unattainable position. The main branch in New York has always been my goal. It would also be great to see Tiffany and the old team."
Ellen noticed Victor standing a few feet away from her, looking like he stepped out of a GQ magazine, wearing a casual blue dress shirt, tan chinos, grey jacket, and boots. The few female colleagues in the office took notice, but his eyes remained fixated on Evangeline. He appeared lost. He fidgeted a little, now and then rubbing the back of his neck. The mood had turned from what she recalled earlier.
"Is everything alright between you two?"
"Not really, but don't worry about it."
"Are you going to introduce us?"
"Sure, Victor..."
Evangeline marveled as Victor eased into a conversation with Ellen, offering tidbits about his life in Llanview and their enduring relationship. The other ladies also came up to introduce themselves, somewhat smitten by his presence, barely noticing her standing beside him.
"Hi, I am Erin."
"Jessica here."
"Nice to meet you. I have a favorite niece named Jessica."
"How wonderful."
"Lois..."
"Patricia, but people call me Patsy."
"Hello, Patsy."
Victor extended a warm hand in greeting to all while exchanging pleasantries. Ellen glanced at Evangeline, giving her the you must be used to this look.
Finally, Ellen cleared her throat, "Ladies, I believe Mr. Lord has important places to be and things to do, and so do you all." Reluctantly, the ladies acquiesced.
"It was nice meeting you again, Victor. Hopefully, we can all get together for dinner sometime."
"I believe so," he responded with a smile.
He placed his left arm around Evangeline's waist, and to his surprise, she didn't pull away. Ellen watched as the two walked out together, wishing her friend the happiness she deserved.
Evangeline's Apartment Complex
Victor and Paul stood on either side of the Land Rover Discovery rental by the parking area of Evangeline's fifty-unit apartment building, waiting for her to return with her luggage. And no, she didn't require his or Paul's assistance. Tall palm trees and green shrubbery landscaped the area, and the weather was pleasantly mild. Still, they both wore shades. Paul was observant while Victor spoke on the phone with Jessica.
"No, Jess, it didn't go as planned. She shot me down before I could even go into my big speech."
"Luckily, she didn't have a weapon."
"Come on Jess be serious."
"Okay, so what are you thinking?"
"That once I explain, this relationship will be in danger."
"You go from zero to one hundred pretty quickly. So you are backing out."
"How can I? One way or the other, she is going to find out. I prefer I tell her first before it all comes out."
Just thinking about it was giving him a headache. He started massaging his forehead.
"How is Sam?"
"He is enjoying his time with his cousins in the playroom. Would you like to talk to him?"
"It's okay. I won't interrupt. By the time I get back, Sam will probably be asleep."
"I doubt it. You know how kids can be, especially when dad makes promises."
Indeed, he always planned on flying back the same day but never expected to have Evangeline in tow.
"Victor, there is something you need to know."
"Oh Boy!"
"I get that it has been that sort of day, but please listen, I may have some good news for you. Cole, Starr, and Hope are planning a trip to Llanview very soon, and she wants to talk to you during her time here."
This news stopped him cold. He started to feel overwhelmed - his stomach contracted, and his pulse raced. He quickly pulled open the car door and took a seat.
"Boss, is everything alright?"
"Yeah." Still, Paul handed him a bottle of water, which he instantly gulped down. "Thanks."
"Victor...Victor...Victor!"
"Jess, I am still here."
"I thought I gave you a heart attack."
"Almost did. H-How do you know this?"
"She called but didn't give me an exact month or date, but be prepared."
"I-I will keep it in mind."
As soon as the conversation ended, he barely had time to think when he saw Evangeline walking towards them with two lavender suitcases and a travel bag. Her outfit consisted of a gray blouse, jeans, strapped stilettos, sunglasses, and hair in a sleek ponytail. He loved the look.
"Let's go."
Llanfair
Jessica stopped by the playroom before proceeding to her mother's home office at the other end of the corridor. The door to Viki's office was slightly ajar, and Jessica couldn't help but eavesdrop on an interesting conversation between her mother and Lynn.
"Viki, this has gotten way out of hand. Victor is further away than before. I can't keep doing this. We had a great friendship."
"You are giving up way too quickly..."
Jessica had heard enough and burst into the room. "Mom, why are you doing this?"
"Jessica!" Both women exclaimed at once.
"And you, Lynn, I thought you were my Uncle's friend. Why would you go along with this deception? So what did my mom offer you?"
"Jessica, you are blowing this way out of proportion," Viki said as she approached her. Lynn remained stoic, unsure of what to say or do next.
"Am I? Victor has been through so much, as have many of us in this family. We should be supportive of one another instead of playing mind games. Mom, you and Lynn must give up on this absurdity right now or else."
"Or else what?"
"I can't do this. I can't do this anymore!" Lynn ran from the room.
"You have just cost me a great assistant."
"Good." Jessica sighed. "Mom, what has Evangeline ever done to you unless you are a closet bigot..."
"That's preposterous!"
"Then are you upset Victor has more faith and trust in a woman who is not his sister? Unlike his family, Evangeline has been there for him through thick and thin. Mom, you want to have it both ways with Todd and Victor; it's impossible because they want you to choose sides."
"Why should I be forced to choose a side?"
"And why should Evangeline be thrust into a stupid battle for Victor's attention? You know how ridiculous that sounds, especially when it's with his sister. My best advice is to leave Victor and Evangeline alone to figure out their relationship. The outside world is tough enough. Family should not be."
One could get used to the private jet amenities. Transitioning from the ground to the air without encountering the crowds at the commercial terminals made traveling seamless. Inside, the interior colors were a mixture of royal blue and gold. Comfortable, reclining, and rotating leather armchairs, a luxurious bathroom, and a small kitchenette are just a few of the impressive perks. Yet Victor and Evangeline struggled to enjoy such comforts. Both were in a mental battle they refused to discuss but needed to. However, Evangeline was busy on the phone with Mr. Stephens from S & L. Victor thought, perfect.
"I'm letting the firm down? What about what they have done to me?" Evangeline asked, exasperated.
"Evangeline, you are making it impossible for me to defend your cause before the partners. What did you expect would come of this."
"Exactly what is happening now. I finally got your full and undivided attention."
"Be serious, Ms. Williamson. Look, I hate having this type of discussion over the phone. Will you be coming to New York?"
"Of course, perhaps in a couple of days. I will need a security clearance."
"Ms. Williamson, don't do anything irrational..."
"Haven't I done so already?" She instantly clicked off her phone.
All this while, he didn't take his eyes off her. She sighed, took a swig of her bottled water, and set it back on the fold-out table.
"You ruined our perfect moment," she started to say without looking at him. "Here I thought you came so unexpectedly because you wanted us to reconnect after so many months apart..."
"I'm sorry. I should have done things differently." His voice was barely above a whisper.
"At least allow me to bask in the moment for a few minutes more." She sighed again, then turned to look at him. There was such sincerity in his eyes. "Whatever it is you need to say to me... I'm all ears."
Victor cleared his throat. "Jessica has been doing investigative work for me these last few weeks..."
"So, you guys have done this in the past..." It immediately began to dawn on her. "Does it involve S & L Enterprises?"
He shook his head. "And the multi-million-dollar fraud two of its lawyers perpetrated on their unsuspecting client."
Chapter 6 by chocolate470
His words were like a dagger to all her plans and hopes. The epitome of her career at S & L Enterprise meant achieving partnership status, but what now? Her only response was...Wow. Ding...Ding the double chime meant the aircraft was above 10,000 feet in altitude. Evangeline quickly rose from her seat with hands on her head and a shocked expression. Once again, she stared at Victor, who reiterated, "It can all be verified."
This time, her eyes stared at the cabin ceiling and then closed. "Why didn't you tell me you were working on an article like this, Victor?" Victor shifted. When he failed to respond, she understood. "You were never going to tell me until Jessica forced you to."
"Truthfully, I never considered it. You are not personally involved..."
"Victor, if it's related to S & L, whether I like it or not, I'm part of it. I am certain this article has been picked up by one of the major news outlets in New York."
"Right," came his straightforward response.
"What a mess. I believe being away from Llanview would keep me away from drama."
"Evangeline..."
Evangeline appeared lost in her world, a series of questions, innuendos, observations, and scenarios floating around her mind. Did she want to know if it involved persons she knew? Would it matter? S&L is a massive firm. She could transfer to a new division. Did she want to? This scandal may affect all of them. She sighed in frustration.
"Is this the curse of being a defense attorney? Trouble always finds a way. The media will be camped outside, and the Appellate Division will be beating down our doors... "
"Sweetheart..." Victor's voice finally broke through the clutter and the unending scenarios. She directed her gaze towards him. "I'm sorry that I didn't consider your perspective. I guess I found it quite easy to proceed, especially when you were transferred to Arizona. I blamed them for what was happening to us."
"There is nothing really to forgive because it is an important story. I wish you had clued me in at the beginning."
Victor was bracing for a fight, but he welcomed her response.
He extended his arms towards her, and she moved into his embrace. Momentarily, his warmth and scent encompassed her fears.
"I'm truly sorry," he repeated while kissing her forehead. Grrr. The sound was unmistakable. "Is that your stomach?"
"Yeah, I didn't eat much." She was also stressed.
"There are some snacks in the galley."
"Perfect."
The interior of the private jet galley was well equipped with a built-in refrigerator, single-unit beverage maker, and microwave. A storage compartment contained plates, bowls, cutlery, cups, glasses, and linen. Another section held various condiments and a small assortment of food that required no refrigeration.
Evangeline instinctively began preparing ham and cheese sandwiches with potato chips for everyone onboard. Victor gazed at her curiously.
"Babe, what? I'm certain I'm not the only one who is hungry."
Victor decided to go along with it. He was okay with her not going into any further detail. If she asked, he would answer, but for now, she didn't.
"What's going on, Amy?" Has anyone exited as yet?"
Tiffany was trying her best to get more updates from the stirrings on the main floor. The partners were locked into back-to-back meetings for a few hours. Earlier, Amy Moore, a fellow legal assistant and confidante on the main floor, provided much insight.
"No, Mr. Stephens is still in there. He didn't appear happy at all."
"Hmmm..."
"I'm overacting! I'm overacting!"
Stephens could barely contain his composure. His face reddened by the belief that their lack of understanding and support cost S & L some of their best lawyers over the past four years. Sweat beads dotted his forehead. He took a deep breath to calm down.
"What is she doing coming to New York?"
"It won't serve any purpose."
"So both you and Sheila admit that sending Ms. Williamson to Arizona was a form of punishment, and I was your stooge."
"Stephens, you have a way of calming situations down. Besides, it was evident what we wanted to accomplish."
"You wanted S & L Arizona to come up to par, and Ms. Williamson fit in quite well. Right, Blake?"
"Ms. Williamson is very ambitious; knowledgeable..."
"And she being tied down in Arizona is doing her a major disservice."
"In your opinion..." Sheila removed her glasses while Blake nodded in agreement.
Sometimes these two principles behaved like an Alien Robotic species unable to relate and create positive changes for the firm's lawyers and staff.
"Tell me, when did S & L lose its way? We were never like this..." He let out an agonizing sigh. The entire exercise drained him. "You know what; this conversation is finished. I have stated my case."
"Gary! Gary!"
"Let him be."
They regarded him as he quickly exited.
"Let him blow off some steam. We have bigger concerns."
Stephens stumbled into Myers on the way out and glared at him briefly, shook his head, and went on without saying a word.
"Mr. Stephens just came out, and he is pissed. Mr. Myers didn't even get as much as a hello from him. It was more like a get the hell out of my way glare."
"Mr. Myers?" Tiffany's mind began to wander. Could this discussion be centered around Evangeline?
Many months had passed since she had seen or spoken to Evangeline. The team just wasn't the same without her. She provided that extra flare to everything and everyone around her.
"Not sure, but rumor is that Evangeline has left the Arizona office."
"When?" Tiffany asked excitedly.
"To-Day."
"Wow....now it's all becoming crystal clear." Tiffany began tapping her forehead with a pencil.
The tense atmosphere within the jet had shifted. Nina Simone's "Feeling Good" was belting through the sound system. Victor was chatting away on his phone while Evangeline's thoughts drifted elsewhere.
"Hey...Hey Beautiful." He took hold of her left hand. They sat across from each other with a fold-out table between them.
"Humph..."
‘Where did your mind go?"
"Nowhere really, just lost in the music, I suppose." She offered him a slight smile.
Her career with S & L was lost as well. It was pointless beating a dead horse.
He interlocked their fingers and stared at the contrast before saying, "I haven't told Sam that you are coming to Llanview. It is going to be a huge surprise for him. He misses you very much."
"I miss him too." Her lips curved into a smile. A few moments later, her countenance shifted to concern. "How is he doing?"
"Honestly, his relationship with Blair has suffered, especially during her stint at St. Ann's. Now, they barely see each other. She is busy figuring out herself, and her relationship with Todd. This hardly leaves room for Sam. I try my best to be there for him..."
There was emotion in his voice, sadness in his eyes. His shoulders slumped a little. The joys and sorrows of being a parent, especially to a little boy with such a complicated backstory.
"You are an amazing father. Don't think any differently about yourself. There will always be doubts, but parenting is never easy. It has its ebbs and flows."
"Apart from Sam, Jessica conveyed Starr wants to talk with me. She didn't give an exact timeframe, but I know she will visit Llanview fairly soon."
"You have wanted this for a long time. I am happy for you." Even though there was a thought that Victor wanted more out of this visit than Starr would or could provide. She chose to remain hopeful for his sake.
A silence fell between them. Evangeline gazed at him, but he focused on their entwined fingers. He moved the back of her hand to his lips, kissing it gently.
"What is it?" her voice asked softly.
"I shouldn't have pushed you away. It was very selfish of me."
"Victor..." She tried pulling away, but he didn't let her.
"Babe, before we proceed with this relationship, we need to discuss that day."
A Glimpse into THAT DAY
What are you doing here?
I can't allow you to drown in your sorrows.
E-Evangeline, please go.
Am I not your best friend? You seem to forget that you still have a life to live.
A life to live. That is so funny. Look at my life. This is not living. I am barely surviving. WHO AM I? My life is one huge lie!
I am not a lie, and neither is your son. Sam is yours, and he needs his father!
And I need you to get out of here and allow me to wallow in my sludge, so if you'll excuse me...
So it's come to this. We have been through worse situations and have been there for each other.
That wasn't me. Was it?
"I felt like such a failure. I couldn't reach you. You were in between worlds..."
"I lost our close bond, and I lost Sam." He cleared a lump in his throat. "That was such a dark moment that I never want to experience it again. I pushed everyone away. The people I love. The woman I love..."
Nat King Cole's "The Very Thought of You" started to play. Evangeline felt frozen by his last words. Did she hear him correctly?
Suddenly, Victor leaned over and kissed her. She was caught off guard, yet her lips eagerly welcomed the taste of his, the tickle and hitch of his breath on her skin with fingers running through her hair. He enjoyed her soft lips, the scent of her perfume, her teeth nipping on his bottom lip, and the feel of her arms around his neck; pulling him closer.
He slowly withdrew from her, still moving his hands along her arms as he reclaimed his seat. Every stroke sent little sparks throughout her whole being. Their lost connection was being reborn.
I see your face in every flower
Your eyes in stars above
It's just the thought of you
The very thought of you, my love
"I love you, Evangeline. There is no other woman I can ever love but you. Can you give it to me? Do you want to?"
Those blue eyes compelled her to speak. It necessitated a response. The music kept swirling in her head, her heart racing. Her brown eyes held his gaze.
"I want to," she responded, rising from her seat. The air was supercharged with emotions. The short stride towards Victor meant stepping into the future that she yearned to be in. "Babe, I want to," she repeated. "I love you...only you."
"Do you see me? Who I am now. Your Todd Manning no longer exists. Yes, we have a past that can never easily be forgotten. Those times, memories, and shared experiences created an unshakable bond..."
"Baby, I see my future with you, Victor Lord Jr, and Sam. I choose us and our family."
He wrapped his arms around her waist and hers snaked around his neck. They had been this close before but this time felt different. The emotional walls that kept them separated were completely broken. Both opened their mouths into a passionate kiss with tongues feverishly exploring until the need for air finally pulled them apart.
"Marry me.."
"Yes." Her abrupt response caught him off guard. His surprised look made her giggle. "Did you expect some hesitation?"
Immediately, he lifted her off the ground and embraced her tightly while spinning her around. He kissed her again. "Baby, you have made me the happiest man in the world. This trip has gone better than expected. I have a plan."
She noted a gleam in his eyes. "Should I be scared?" she asked sarcastically.
"Trust me, Baby."
"Forever."
Chapter 7 by chocolate470
The modern art, polished wood paneling, leather chairs, and state-of-the-art visual equipment remained secondary to the tense atmosphere dominating the main floor's conference room. There were accusations, and speculations being hurled back and forth between the three managing partners - Thomas Myers, Sheila Hemsley, and Blake Thurton. Once close-knit, they were leery of one another's actions. Thomas and Blake were the main antagonists with Sheila putting in her two cents now and then. She retreated to her steady pacing with hands sometimes folded, head often downwards seemingly examining the intricate floor tiles. Just a moment ago all had received the stunning news from Gary that he was resigning his position immediately.
"Stephens left because of you!" Blake shouted.
"How is this my fault?" Thomas rubbed his left hand over his face miffed. Afterward, he gave Blake an incredulous stare.
"You heard me correctly. You always love to straddle the edge but this time you went more than a bit overboard!"
Blake's eyes blazed with fury, his teeth gritted, and his face flushed. Thomas' bitter laugh reverberated within the room's confines.
"I'm not the only one to blame for this mess. We are all in this sinking boat together. You want to fight me, Blake. Give me your best shot!" Thomas unbuttoned his jacket whilst Blake clenched his fists.
"Gentlemen, please just shut up and calm down! Do both of you understand the gravity of Gary's resignation? Do you also understand what it means for Shuster & Lewis?"
It was then that an inescapable silence fell between them. Gary's wealth of experience and impeccable reputation brought in many clients and kept them loyal to the law firm. He was seen as a visionary; someone many associates trusted and confided in. Even if the firm's decision was a bitter pill to swallow, Gary allayed their fears and they felt confident that he would listen to their concerns doing his best to get this across to the other partners.
Blake blew out a breath. "Once this news gets out..."
"Hasn't it already," Thomas interjected straightening his tie.
"I don't think so but it will."
"Sheila, you need to speak to him. He won't listen to us."
"And say what Thomas? This isn't like the last time."
The last time the managing partners voted against Gary's proposal of utilizing some of the associates to perform pro bono work for a particular community in the DC area. Sheila convinced him the timing wasn't suitable due to the firm's involvement in some monumental cases.
"Gary felt that Ms. Williamson was becoming an integral part of the firm."
Thomas rolled his eyes. "Not this again. Didn't Ms. Williamson succeed at her assignment?"
Blake countered, "It doesn't matter now. The irreparable damage has been done. We should have never listened to your argument."
"You know why you listened," Thomas responded with a sneer and an icy stare.
"Again gentlemen enough," she stated firmly. "We need to call an emergency meeting immediately and begin reassuring our staff, and valuable clients."
"Don't forget the press," Blake said nervously, running a hand through his coif. "Who knows when they will get hold of this juicy bit of news."
"Wow, this day just keeps getting better and better."
The car ride from the airport brought on a whirlwind of emotions for Evangeline. She allowed her mind to concentrate on the present, especially the man next to her. She hummed if this is love, massaging the back of Victor's neck. He smiled. Evangeline appeared to glow in the fading sunlight. Ah man if she only knew the hold she had on him. He refocused his eyes on the road ahead. Paul wasn't with them instead he transported their luggage back to the penthouse in another vehicle.
Victor's left hand effortlessly maneuvered the Lexus' steering wheel. Soon, his right fingers laced together with her left into a relaxed hold.
"Baby, how are you feeling?"
"Happy for the first time in a long while," she replied with a wide grin. It was genuine happiness.
The setting sun propelled its orange, red, and gold colors across the horizon in one last hooray of colors. Llanview's skyline moved across her sunshades. The familiar facades and architecture stirred her emotions - some good - some distressing. She momentarily closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and gripped his fingers tightly.
"Are you willing to live here full-time?"
It was indeed a necessary question. Hadn't she confessed her disdain for Llanview not so long ago? He never wanted to force her to live here but Llanview was his home - his family, the business. Could she brush aside her unease to be with him and create a family?
"I know I can," she replied with confidence. Victor lifted and kissed the back of her hand. "My mind will remain focused on the positives. The biggest being you, Sam, and Layla of course," she quickly added with a chuckle.
"I love you and wherever you are that's where I want to be," she softly said
"I love you more."
Meanwhile...
Layla wasn't sure why Evangeline requested her presence at Llanfair. She recalled only a few times when she was permitted to grace the hallow estate. Evangeline's call didn't share any specifics. She believed that it may have something to do with her getting back with Victor. Sam usually stayed with Jessica while Victor was away so it meant that whatever Evangeline was planning; she was killing two birds with one stone. It may also mean that she needed support. Even though the sisters directed their energies towards divergent career goals, she was thrilled to see Evangeline after so many months apart.
"Hey, how long have you been standing out here, Layla?"
Jack jolted her from her thoughts. He was wearing a black t-shirt with jeans, and suede chukka boots. She wore a blue jumpsuit with hair sleeked back into a ponytail and tan pumps.
"I'm not sure." She wasn't even sure if she had rang the doorbell. Jack proceeded to do so.
"Believe it or not I've been expecting the both of you to arrive," Jessica announced upon opening the door. She was wearing jeans, a floral printed blouse with sandals, and hair in a ponytail.
"So you know what's going on?"
"And the reason we've been invited over here?"
"Not really but I'm expecting a huge announcement just look at the guest list."
By the time they arrived at the Llanfair Estate, evening was descending. Victor and Evangeline quietly strolled arm-in-arm along the lighted pathway, which featured blooming roses, snowdrops, lilies, and bluebells. A slight wind rustled the leaves on the maple trees as the birds sang melodically on their branches. One could easily become mesmerized by the estate's landscape and the luxurious mansion at its center.
Although tired from the long flight, the drive from Llanview Airport; and everything in between, both felt it important to share their exciting news.
"We could do this tomorrow," he teased.
"It is best that they know first before anyone else."
"You're right of course or Jessica will give me an earful." Just the thought made his lips curve into a playful smirk.
"And what about Layla?"
Before Evangeline could make another step, Victor pulled her into his arms and kissed her passionately until both were left gasping for air.
"Hmmm...."
The atmosphere was electric. Light blue and deep brown eyes locked momentarily conveying varied and unspoken emotions. Their foreheads touched.
"Sweetheart, you amaze me," he whispered. Both hands lingered on her cheeks gently caressing them sending shivers throughout her body. "I'm completely mesmerized."
Evangeline's hands lay next to his heart. "Baby, every time I look at you, I not only see a gorgeous man," Victor seemed to blush at this compliment, "but someone who is a beautiful human being inside. I am committed to us. I'm committed to building our new future. Honey, I love you so much."
"I love you too."
Just as they were about to lean in for another kiss...
"Ahem," Jessica cleared her throat.
"So this is where you two have been hiding in plain sight," Layla said from behind.
"Dad...Evangeline..." Jack acknowledged with a sly smile.
Jessica, Layla, and Jack stood at the mansion's front door. The lovebirds barely retreated from their embrace or their lingering gaze.
"Evangeline!" an excited Sam ran past them, leaping into Evangeline's arms.
"Sam! I've missed you."
"I've missed you so much. I thought I would never see you again."
"I would have never allowed that to happen."
"Promise to never go away for so long again."
Her eyes glistened. "Promise," she responded, kissing his cheek.
Victor always appreciated the close bond that Evangeline shared with Sam. It made certain decisions very easy.
"Everyone, we have some exciting news to share," Victor announced.
Jessica screamed, "You're engaged!"
Layla's mouth fell open, speechless. Her eyes blinked then shifted between the two. It was happening too fast for her brain to comprehend.
"Dad?"
Evangeline and Victor exchanged amused glances. "You were this close, Jessica but we are married!" Evangeline announced joyously.
Victor drew her close to him. They shared a short but sweet kiss. "Introducing Mr. and Mrs. Lord," Victor said without averting his gaze from Evangeline.
"WHAT!" All three yelled in unison.
"We are a family now," Sam said with excitement and a gleam in his blue eyes.
"Yeah, kiddo we are finally a family."
The three of them shared a sweet embrace.
"Sam, do you understand what this means?"
"Yeah, Dad. It means Evangeline will come and live with us."
"That's right, buddy."
The others began offering up their congratulations.
"Let me see the ring!"
Jack rolled his eyes while the ladies gushed over the double-halo pink diamond ring.
Victor rested a hand on his shoulder and said, "You'll learn as you get older Jack."
"Aww this is too exquisite."
"I want to see too," Sam said after being pushed aside in the frenzy. Evangeline offered her hand and he carefully examined the ring as it gleamed brightly. "Dad you did great!"
"I'm happy for your seal of approval," Victor smiled.
"I guess my only disappointment is that I didn't get to go to a wedding," Jessica sighed.
"Or plan one," Layla added shaking her head. "Still I'm happy for you sis."
"Sometimes these things are meant to happen when they do," Evangeline explained.
"At the moment it just felt right. I couldn't let it slip by."
Victor and Evangeline barely responded to the barrage of questions that came next.
"Hey everyone, Mrs. Lord and I are tired from all our adventures." Victor wrapped an arm around Evangeline's waist and she leaned against him.
"We planned on taking everyone to dinner to celebrate but..."
"We get it. The two of you need to get some rest," Layla winked.
"Hey, I may have a suggestion," Jessica offered with a twinkle in her eyes.

************
"So you thought you could run without my knowing?"
"I am not running away!"
"Your bags are packed and you certainly aren't dressed for a night out."
"Potato Potahto."
"I don't find this situation the least bit funny. Let me make this clear. You are not going anywhere until I say so."
"Are you threatening me?"
"Tomato Tomahto. Call it what you will."
Chapter 8 by chocolate470
Ellen drummed her manicured fingers on the bedside table. She hardly looked like herself, dressed in black capris and a pink blouse. Her effortless makeup included foundation, bronzer, blush, and light pink lip gloss; her blonde strands were cut to a manageable shoulder length.
Her hotel room was rather small and lacked her usual flair. She regarded it as a discreet layover. Thomas's eyes scrutinized the space: a noisy air conditioner, cheap decorations, hideous curtains, and flimsy sheets.
"Of all the places I expected to find you." He decided it was best not to remove his jacket.
"It's clean, not that I particularly care about your critique at the moment," she sneered. "Why were you following me?"
"Correction, I had you found. You weren't answering my calls. What was I supposed to do?" he asked with both hands on his hips.
Ellen sighed. It was a rhetorical question. The invisible clock in her mind kept ticking away. Thomas was wasting her valuable time. Moreover, he refused to leave. He began staring at her with those dark, cold eyes. The fact that he found her so quickly turned into more than a huge inconvenience. Now she might have to face the brunt of his anger.
"Let's go," he stated through gritted teeth.
She stood and said, "I'm not going anywhere with you. Don't you see I have my plans."
The air was thick with their presence-a mixture of designer cologne and perfume mingling with the room's stuffiness. Their growing hostilities simmered between them.
Thomas furrowed his brow. "Plans?" The question hung in the air until he let out a bitter chuckle. "S & L is going through a crisis....
"And why is it my concern?" she immediately retorted.
"How do you think this will look for both of us?"
"Now you want to care about our reputation, optics!"
"Would you keep your voice down," he growled.
"Why are the walls too thin Mr. Myers."
He grabbed her left wrist, pulling her roughly towards him. "You don't speak to me in that tone. You just don't seem to get it!"
Her grey eyes gave him an incredulous look. "It's you that doesn't seem to get the avalanche that is about to bury us," she hissed, breaking free.
"Oh, please. Who doesn't know by now that Gary has left?" he said, dragging his fingers through his mane.
She stroked her forearm and thought he couldn't be this naive, or perhaps he floated between worlds. Man, she desperately needed a cigarette to calm her frayed nerves; a vice she gave up a few years ago. All her careful planning was being put on hold. She needed to get as far away from Washington as soon as possible.
Ellen chuckled, revealing her perfect, white, sculpted teeth.
"Oh, it's much deeper than you realize. Un malheur ne vient jamais seul. This coming week, there will be a huge article about S & L and all its past and present shady dealings. The reporters in Washington will be the least of its worries. It's about to go global. I'm shocked neither you, Silly Sheila, nor Terrible Thurton were aware. These things happen when you fly too close to the sun."
"You lie! There is no way. No Way!"
"Why do you think I'm here! I don't want to stick around for the bomb, if you get my meaning. So Let Me Go!!"
"If this is true, then..." He coldly glared at her. "You think I can let you go. You may have been talking to the press, and now you are cashing in your chips."
"Don't be ridiculous!"
He began walking quickly towards her with a crazed look in his eyes. She opened her mouth to scream, but he clasped her mouth, muffling her cries. Her eyes grew wide with fear. Her hands flayed about desperately searching for anything that could assist her.
"Le temps de jeu est terminé."
Owww, he screamed out after she managed to bite his hand. Soon afterwards, she kneed him hard in the groin. He crumpled to the ground, groaning in obvious pain.
"Bastard!" she yelled at him through ragged breaths.
She grabbed her tote and bolted for the exit.
"Ellen! Ellen!"

Last night...hmm... exquisite details vividly ran through her thoughts, as a wide smile lay plastered across her face. Dawn came, and of course it continued. She bit her bottom lip, massaged the back of her neck, recalling every minute detail, setting her body aflame. Victor certainly knew how to please his wife. No wonder Blair couldn't get enough of him, even though Todd sauntered back into her life. They belonged only to one another now. She made sure to give him all of her. Her hair was messy, her body ached, and her lips were recovering, but still, she craved his touch.
A light breeze stirred the loose strands from her messy updo. The penthouse's outdoor terrace lay just outside the sliding doors of the master suite. It provided panoramic views of the Llanview skyline. Her skin glowed from the golden rays of the overhead sun before it retreated behind an ominous cloud. She barely registered the noise of the traffic below, draped in her silk robe after a much-needed warm, luxurious soak in the tub. The weekend was theirs alone, and Victor was busy preparing breakfast downstairs, or so he said. The proof would be in the eating.
Happy thoughts dominated her mood until her mind started to stray towards the coming week and all the drama that came along with it. She dared not check any updates on her phone. So many lives at S & L were about to be affected. How many innocent souls would be caught in the crossfire? Did she dare to travel there as planned?
"A penny for your thoughts."
Victor's arms enveloped her from behind, and he softly kissed the base of her neck.
"It will cost you much more than that, Mr. Lord."
"How much more, Mrs. Lord?"
She turned, winding her arms around his neck, leaning in for a long, sultry kiss.
"Baby, you smell so good."
"And so do you."
They kissed again, more deeply, until they leaned their foreheads together, breathless.
"While this is beautiful, my love, your wife cannot live on our love alone. Babe, I'm starving."
Victor grinned, giving her a quick peck on her lips. "Your husband can't allow that to happen. So come."
He took her hand, guided her towards her seat, and then pushed a trolley laden with breakfast, plates, glasses, and cups.
Evangeline arched an eyebrow at what she saw - French toast, yogurt, fruit, orange juice, and coffee.
"You prepared all of this?"
"What, Sweetheart, you don't believe me?"
"Well, I recalled you couldn't boil water," she giggled.
Victor chuckled at the memory. "Things have changed. What do you want to taste first?"
"Everything," she replied unabashedly. "Hmmm, this tastes so delicious."
He also ate and watched her with a satisfaction etched on his face.
"I am pleasantly impressed."
"Thanks, Sweetheart. I'm glad you enjoyed it."
"Indeed, I did. Babe, I was thinking..."
"We should plan a small wedding, inviting our close family and friends," he finished.
"Yes," she confirmed quietly. She had mentally prepared for an objection-the "Old Todd." She immediately silenced that thought. "So you agree?" She turned towards him, sipping the last drops of her dark roast coffee.
"Yes, why not? We can get decked out, and everyone can finally celebrate our happiness."
He smiled that smile that made her heart race.
She set her cup down, leaning her head against the plush seating. Victor soon joined her. They gazed at each other, their eyes conveying unspoken words. The air was thick with their type of tension.
"Talk to me," he whispered. His hand trailed gently along her arm. "This has to be the one constant between us."
"In some ways, you are like an intricate puzzle that I must unlock," she softly said. "Some things are the same while others are new, different. There's so much more I need to discover, and part of me is frustrated by it," she sighed. "You know me more intimately than I do you."
His left palm caressed her cheek. "Is that such a bad thing?" he questioned with intensity in his eyes.
She grasped his hand and kissed its palm. "No, it makes for an interesting and enjoyable journey together." She leaned in and kissed him sweetly. "I love you...only you. That too, will be a constant forever between us."
A genuine laugh escaped his lips. "Baby, I love you more."
Another kiss, and afterward they snuggled into each other's embrace. For now, no phones, no worries, just them.

Chapter 9 by chocolate470
"I've been expecting you."
"Have you?" She curtly tossed her Khaite tote on the vacant seat. Her piercing mahogany brown eyes scanned the details of his office space. She begrudgingly appreciated its eclectic flair, such as the combination of a crystal glass vase set on a vintage side table. He, in turn, took in every shift in her gaze, every stride. She strolled from side to side, taking it all in. His heart raced, but he forced himself not to let her see the effect she was having as he leaned against his desk.
"Impressive," she said with a sigh, finally taking her seat.
Certainly not a full-fledged compliment, but it would do.
"Is it." His mouth eased into a slight smile, and yet his body remained tense. He dared not let his guard down. He needed to stay prepared for what was to come. "Can I offer you anything, coffee, tea, water?"
"I'm fine," she said, waving her hand. "This won't take long. Let's talk."
S & L Headquarters The Day of....
Chaos was one word that sprang to mind. Tiffany watched the nightmare slowly unfold around her. After the last meeting, she hadn't expected things to deteriorate this quickly. Around every corner, there were whispers, innuendos, secret meetings, and misgivings. Would everyone jump ship? The team, her team, was fractured. James and Kent had already followed in Mr. Stephens' footsteps, both having sent in their resignations. Ethan was barely hanging on, and Molly, well, one never knew when it came to her.
After all that was said and done, she hadn't envisioned how terrible the news was and what the firm was accused of doing. S & L bilking clients out of millions of dollars over some years - wow. It played across every medium. Some of the press were camped outside the building in anticipation of any further updates. The phones rang incessantly with media and frantic clients calling. The principals told them to carry on with their work as usual; a meeting would come shortly.
But when?
The world she trusted for so much of her working years was completely deteriorating. Why was she still here? Why hadn't she packed up her stuff and left? Maybe she was waiting like the others who remained in the building for the final shoe to fall.
S & L, a prestigious law firm in the Washington, DC area, now finds itself being accused of massive fraud and stealing millions of dollars from its clients. How did it get here? Who are the lawyers involved, and what happens next?
Tiffany recoiled upon hearing the shocking news. She recalled the coffee cup slipping from her hands and shattering on the floor when the news first broke. Many stayed glued to their screens, phones, and tablets. The air was stifling, and she felt lightheaded. Luckily, Ethan was there and he guided her to her desk.
"This can't be happening," she repeatedly muttered to herself.
"Anything is possible. I believe it's over, Tiff. We are the last of the team standing."
It couldn't be, she thought. This was her dream job. She spent her life fostering relationships, gaining perspective, and finding comfort in a working environment where she flourished.
"It simply can't be," she softly protested upon reaching her desk and sitting down.
"Is there anything else you need? Are you alright?"
"I'm fine, Ethan. I just had too much swirling in my mind. I'm feeling much better now, thanks." Before he turned to go, she said, "This scandal can't crush us, right?"
"Honestly, I believe they have just scratched the surface," came his sobering response. "It goes way deeper."
"Who did this? Could it possibly be members of our team?"
Ethan shrugged. "We will find out soon enough."
Tiffany let out a long sigh. "Humph, in a way I feel so naive, or maybe I just didn't want to know. It was safer to do my best job, collect my check, and go home."
"Don't worry, Tiff. You and I will survive this crisis because we are better than they ever will be."
He pulled her into an embrace, and she appreciated the gesture.
Meanwhile...
"You see the mess you have created for all of us."
"You can't dump this all on me," Molly hissed. "And what about Thomas, who seems conspicuously absent?"
Sheila, Blake, and Molly stood within the confines of Sheila's office. The outside world may be collapsing, but there were matters to discuss.
Sheila, in her black and white tailored suit, with her black hair pulled into a tight bun, stood with arms crossed. In contrast, Blake wore a tailored navy suit with a burgundy silk tie. He intermittently tapped his dark brown oxfords.
Although impeccably dressed in a peach blouse, jacket, black pants, and stilettos, Molly was more than a little frazzled. Flawless on the outside, but underneath the facade was cracking. When the news first broke, she was unfortunately inside the building and dared not leave. Then the call came. From the moment her heels clicked across the marble floor of the long corridor, all eyes were on her. No warm greetings, merely whispers. They all knew, didn't they? She shivered on the elevator ride to the top floor.
"Sheila, Blake, you need to continue talking to the press. Release a more detailed statement..."
She thought there was a slight chance they were on her side.
"And what more can be said, Molly? This can be managed."
"Our PR team is handling the press, don't worry," Blake added dismissively.
"Oh really," Molly scoffed.
"Where is Thomas?"
"I don't know. Thomas is a coward," she stated angrily.
The bastard just left without any warning. After all the times he protected her, she never expected this betrayal. Now she was facing the growling wolves alone.
"But you knew about this oncoming storm, didn't you? Either you couldn't run, or your egos prevented it! " Her hazel eyes glared at them suspiciously. "Narcissistic tendencies rule around here."
"And what should we admit to doing exactly?" Sheila asked coolly.
"S & L's very best and brightest lawyers committed fraud on the highest scale."
"It was out of our hands from the start."
"Was it! Both of you called me in here for what exactly? Stand before the media and ODC, admitting my guilt. I'm not sticking around for this." There was irritation and malice in her tone.
Molly flicked her hair and began walking away, but Blake caught her wrist. "You are going to stick around, Ms. Akord. You and Thomas don't control this narrative anymore."
"Who said we ever did?" Molly pulled her hand away. "If both of you think that I am going to take the fall for this alone..."
Blake gritted his teeth. "Although Thomas isn't here, he will be found. You two come as a matching set. S & L is in free fall because of this..."
"I was strictly following the orders of my superiors."
"While vacationing a time or two in Bora Bora...I'm not even sure about those billable hours..."
Molly slapped him hard. Blake stood momentarily stunned, the imprint of her hand blazed in red against his cheek. In a rage, he quickly grabbed her shoulders and violently shook her. Molly cried out.
"Blake, stop!" came Sheila's authoritative voice. He reluctantly let her go, slowly backed away, still seething. "We cannot lose our balance. We have a business to save. There is too much at stake!"
"Now you care." Molly rubbed her aching shoulders. Her body trembled, and she stumbled to the window. Outside, the skies darkened. "But it's too late. It can't be saved. They will all come. The ODC, the OAG. You can't save something that is corrupted."
Sheila and Blake weren't listening. Both were frantically speaking on their phones. Molly felt literally and figuratively imprisoned.
A streak of lightning lit up the sky, followed by a crackle of thunder. The office lights briefly dimmed, and then Molly unexpectedly crumpled to the floor.
Present Day, earlier that morning...
Evangeline would admit that at first, she was fully engrossed in the daily news and updates regarding the S&L scandal. The weeks that followed saw familiar names being tossed around for investigation, such as Sheila, Blake, Thomas, Molly, and even Ellen. Sometimes you didn't know people. You only see the surface and not what lies beneath it.
Thomas and Ellen had disappeared. Molly hospitalized. Gary was called in for questioning and said to be cooperating. Sheila and Blake had lawyered up. S&L's legacy, corporate dominance, was crumbling not only because of clients, lawyers, and personnel leaving, but also due to the multiple lawsuits being filed.
Finally, Victor advised her not to dwell on it, and she agreed. S&L was a brief period in her life. A long future with Victor, Sam, and their family lay ahead, as did their upcoming nuptials.
"Thanks for those delicious pancakes, Evangeline. I like them a lot."
"You did?"
"See." Sam's eyes lit up, showing his empty plate with remnants of maple syrup.
Victor leaned forward. "I thought you said you liked my pancakes a lot, buddy," Victor teased, winking at Evangeline.
"I do, Dad. It's just that I like Evangeline's a lot more." Victor sat back in his chair in mock disbelief, chuckling. " Could you make it again tomorrow?"
"Of course, Baby," she replied with a smile. "Anything for the cute little boy who appreciates my cooking."
All three were seated around the breakfast table.
"Yes." His response amused Evangeline.
Soon, he would be leaving for school. Victor for an early morning meeting. Evangeline had plans of her own.
"Okay, you can go and grab your backpack. I'll be with you in a sec."
"Alright, Dad." He kissed Evangeline's cheek before leaving. "Don't take too long," he added mischievously. Victor playfully chased him.
"I have no clue what Sam is talking about," she said sarcastically.
Victor pulled her into his arms and kissed her deeply. "This. I appreciate your cooking as well, amongst other things," he added seductively. "What is my reward?"
"I'll reward you later."
"I can't wait."
"Have a great day, Babe."
"Hey, it's not time for me to leave as yet," he said, finding her lips again.
"Dad!"
"Yes, it is," Evangeline smiled. "Also, please remember my mother is coming to Llanview today."
"How could I forget your long speech from a couple of evenings ago. And you think she will visit me first before her lovely daughters."
"Of course, she will. It's her nature, so be prepared."
"I'm always prepared for anything," he smirked.
"Oh really," she said in a sultry tone. gazing up at him. "Mom is known to be intimidating."
"I'm not easily intimidated."
"I know."
One last sweet kiss until...
"Dad, let's go. I don't want to be late for school."
"Okay, buddy, I'm coming."
Chapter 10 by chocolate470
Office calls placed on hold, his iPhone silenced, a meeting postponed. Victor assumed any outside distractions would throw him off balance. A conversation with Evangeline's mother required nerves of steel and focus.
There was a certain regal air that surrounded Lisa Williamson. A beauty that couldn't be explained and an age that hadn't claimed her sculpted features. She wore a white, silk blouse, a navy skirt, simple gold earrings, and a necklace. He thought she could have worn a potato sack and still be impressive. She had endowed her daughters with many great and endearing qualities. Evangeline is one of the rare jewels from her crown.
Victor did his best to compose himself. In one of the rare moments, he felt a bit of uneasiness. He briefly paced, stuffing his sweaty palms inside his chino pockets.
"I'm trying to decide if I need to watch you two closely," said Lisa with a slight smile etched on her face.

"Meaning me? Why?" Victor's eyes blinked. "I would never intentionally hurt Evangeline. She matters more to me than you will ever know," he stressed with conviction.
"As you know, personally, my daughter has been through a great deal. There were times I had to assist her in picking up the pieces."
"You meant that one time. Her relationships with RJ and Christian won't factor into this." Victor slowly leaned against the edge of his desk, arms crossed, a scowl plastered on his face. "I find it quite insulting that you want to compare me to that spineless weasel, McBain."
"You forget I was also there, witnessing the crushing aftereffects. Her poise and elegance remained, but she carried herself differently from the woman I first met. Evangeline confessed to a love that John was unable and unwilling to give. I wanted to crush him and rip him apart."

"And why didn't you?" she asked, her voice tinged with disdain.
"Because the man that I was back then saw an opportunity."
"Ah, Todd Manning, the alter ego."
"Irene's alter ego," he corrected,
"An alter ego that proved beneficial on many fronts, which includes meeting my daughter."
"I can accept that." He removed his jacket. "I'm surprised you didn't do anything about John yourself."
"John has and will always be an emotional wreck. He allows his past to manipulate and dictate his future, regardless of the cost. I thought Evangeline dodged a bullet with that one. Yet I let my guard down too quickly." Lisa stood. Her deep brown eyes stared at him with fascination. "Todd Manning was waiting in the shadows. You wanted to use this emotional crisis to your advantage."
Victor strode to the side table and poured himself a glass of water. "In the beginning, yes, I did," he softly admitted, taking a long swallow. "I wanted to have her in my corner. At the time, there were too many bad things happening in my life, and I needed a great ally. I saw how she was indispensable to Mitch Laurence. Of course, she became much more than an ally."
"So you took advantage of her kindness, not unlike John..."
"Again, I'm not that bastard John! I could never hurt her the way he did!" Victor snapped; breath ragged, hands clenched.
Lisa remained stoic. "If I recall correctly, you came this close a couple of times."
He understood her connotation and shifted his eyes towards the sliding glass window. Outside, the sun and the clouds moved around one another intermittently, obscuring the Llanview skyline. Inside, his emotions spiralled between calm and apprehension.
"You know how to cut pretty deep."
"Did I hit a nerve, Mr. Lord?"
"Not completely. I've endured worse." He took in a deep breath and exhaled. "Just making an observation, and please call me Victor. I am your son-in-law after all."
"That you are. However, I still prefer Mrs. Williamson for now."
"Okay then, Mrs. Williamson, the first time, I didn't want Evangeline locked into my world of battling my crazy ex-wife, who was willing and able to do anything to get back with and at me."
"And the second time, you completely pushed her away when nothing was impeding you two from finally being together and having a relationship. I knew she wanted it. She had been waiting and lying to herself for so long." Victor gulped down the remaining water and set the glass back in its tray. "I want to trust that you will always want to do the right thing concerning my daughter. I know she loves you more than she has ever loved anyone. Sometimes I wonder if she is giving away her heart too much, especially to a man who has so many complexities."
Her words hit him hard. Any swift rebuttal failed him. Silence permeated the air. He tuned into the rhythmic beating of his heart while the distant sounds of Llanview resonated just below.
"Are you insinuating that I'm not good enough?"
"I am just asking, why chase after her. It's not like your life isn't complicated enough with a son who will one day have questions, with difficult truths."
Victor's blue eyes gazed back at her. "When Evangeline left Llanview, it broke me and wrecked my life even further. It was then that I discovered how much I loved and needed her to be with me, imperfect as I am. Her presence makes me want to be better. I want to show and give her the best of me."
"You are certainly getting the best of her."
"Mrs. Williamson..."
Lisa held up a hand. "Victor, I understand that my daughters are grown women and can take care of themselves. I will, however, step in if any one of them is pushed to the brink. Don't get on my bad side, Mr. Lord. You will find that I have my ways as much as you do."
Victor cleared his throat. "Noted."
She leaned forward, grabbing her purse. "Victor, it's been a pleasure; take care. We will see each other soon." She held out her hand. He bowed slightly and kissed it. "No need to walk me to the door. I know the way." The click-clack of her black stilettos moved rhythmically on the tiled floor. Then she turned, manicured fingers curled on the door handle. "I heard you are writing a book. How is it coming along?"
"It's coming, but not anytime soon. My mind needs to concentrate on one thing at a time."
"Good, continue to concentrate on Evangeline and her happiness. Although you did take the time to topple a corrupt corporation."
Victor raised his eyebrows. "I can't get anything past you, can I?"
"I hope you remember that."
Victor offered a wry smile.
"Enjoy the rest of your day."
Victor let out another breath after she left. He plopped down in his chair, pressing his palms to his face, pausing a few minutes to reset.
Penthouse...
Layla and Evangeline sat cross-legged around the living room's coffee table. A couple of classic bridal magazines lay spread out next to them while their eyes scanned the wedding checklist on Evangeline's laptop. Both were dressed casually in jeans and T-shirts, their tresses tied in loose buns, munching on a mixture of pretzels, nuts, popcorn, and drinking Olipop.
"I love the fact that you and Victor decided to have a wedding charity register."
"It was the best thing to do given our situation. We are also donating, with Sam choosing the charity."
"Aww, that's so sweet. How does it feel stepping into this new motherly role?"
"I don't know. It seems natural to me because Sam and I already share this special bond."
A Zoom pop-up notification suddenly appeared on the screen.
"Looks like hubby wants to video chat."
"Perfect time for me to stretch my legs and refresh our bowl."
"Hey, Love."
"Hey, Baby. What have you and your sister been up to?"
"We're still working through the wedding preparations. You know the boring planning stuff that men don't seem to be interested in."
"Because women do it best."
"Great answer. I didn't expect to hear from you this early. I thought you would be bogged down in meetings this morning."
His face appeared a bit weary, with hair tousled and shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows.
"Is everything okay?"
"This is how a man looks after speaking with your mother. If I weren't Victor Lord Jr., I would have peed my pants."
Evangeline burst out laughing.
"Babe, I'm being serious," he said, chuckling to himself. "I might be over exaggerating."
"Might be? You make my mother sound like Don Corleone," she replied between laughter.
"Evangeline, your mother can be very intimidating, but I get it, though. I would be protective of my beautiful daughter as well."
"How about I stop by and bring you your favorite paninis from TJs along with a bottle of San Pellegrino for lunch?"
"Sounds perfect," he replied with a wide grin. "I can't wait, Sweetheart. I'll set aside a couple of hours.I don't want us to rush spending time together."
"I completely agree."
At this point, words ceased. Just lingering stares and smiles between the two. Evangeline brushed aside a few errant strands, causing Victor to lean forward.
"I wish I were there to do that."
She felt his words delicately caressing her. It was as if his very breath hovered over her skin.
"Do you?" she teased, her question floated like a whisper.
"I thought you two had finished virtually canoodling," Layla interrupted, shattering the moment.
Layla set down a bowl filled with various kinds of fruit. Victor sighed, shaking his head.
"Perfect timing, Layla."
"Thanks."
Evangeline chuckled, sampling a slice of kiwi. "Play nice, you two."
"Sweetheart, Layla is like the annoying little sister I never had."
Layla made a face at him. "Bro, I hear your phone ringing."
"I might as well answer it. I have a meeting that I can't reschedule. Babe, see you for lunch. Bye, love you."
"Love you too."
The connection ended.
"Victor doesn't look quite himself today."
"It's been that type of morning."
"It always is," Layla agreed.
"Did you know, Mom is already in town?"
"What, and she hasn't contacted me."
"Me neither."
"Hmm, interesting," Layla said thoughtfully, munching on a bit of pretzels and peanuts.
Evangeline stood, stretching her arms and legs. "I'm going to get ready for that lunch with my hubby."
"Nice. However, don't tell him I said so."
"I promise I won't," Evangeline giggled.
"I wish my personal life were as settled as yours is now."
"Hmmm, by the way, Layla, who is Daehyun Kang?" Layla froze. "Should he be on my guest list?
"No!"
Evangeline ran up the staircase laughing uncontrollably.
Chapter 11 by chocolate470
Evangeline stepped off the elevator and greeted Tina, along with a few other familiar staff members from the VLJ team. Clutching TJ's signature brown takeaway bag, the faint aroma of lunch wafting from within, she made her way to Victor's private office. She was dressed in a vibrant floral dress and cute sandals that clicked softly against the marble floor. Her natural curls cascading effortlessly around her face. Suddenly, she felt her phone buzz.
"Hello Mom. Where are you?" She answered.
"I'm somewhere in town. I have some business to handle. I'll see you later," her mother replied.
"Mom, we need to talk, and we both know why."
"About my short visit with Victor? It wasn't a huge deal. He survived, and I like him."
"Mom... that's not the point."
"Baby, I promise we'll chat later, but I've got to go. Love you, bye."
"Mom..." Lisa had already hung up.
Evangeline briefly stared down at her phone, let out an exasperated sigh, then chucked it into her mini shoulder bag.
Evangeline took a deep breath, then slowly exhaled before opening the door. As she entered, the soothing sounds of instrumental jazz filled the room.
"Hello, my love... lunch is served as promised," she announced with a bright smile, her eyes sparkling.
Victor's spirits lifted instantly. "Hey, sweetheart! Right on time! I'm starving."
He pulled her into a passionate kiss and embrace.
"It's been quite a day for you so far," she said, running her fingers through his tousled hair.
"It has, but you're here, smelling and looking radiant, which makes everything better. What would I do without you?"
"I don't know. Better not try to find out," she said teasingly with a playful wink.
"I definitely will not."
They shared another kiss. "Do you prefer eating in here or sitting out on the balcony?"
"I prefer jazz over the noise of Llanview afternoon traffic any day."
He smiled. "Then it's settled."
Victor recounted highlights from his conversation with her mother, and Evangeline listened with rapt attention.
"Lisa is quite intimidating in person," he remarked, an amused glint in his eyes.
"So I've been told, but since she is my mother, I'm unfazed by it," Evangeline replied with a chuckle.
"I believe your mother has a begrudging respect for me."
"She mentioned as much during our call. She actually said she likes you."
A satisfied smile spread across Victor's face.
"Don't get too overconfident." She playfully nudged him with her shoulder.
"I'm not, he grinned.
They savored every delicious morsel of their lunch until they were satisfied.
"Now, Babe, that was a great lunch. Thanks so much," he said, kissing her softly.
"You're welcome, Babe."
"Although I did find your sandwich selection interesting."
"You mean my grilled caprese? What's wrong with it? I enjoyed it a lot. I saw it, ordered it, and loved it. I might just try making it at home because it's simply delicious."
Victor groaned. "Are you on some health kick? Lately, your diet seems to have taken a turn. I see you preparing all sorts of different meals for yourself."
"I'm navigating my new life and exploring new possibilities. My life in Washington and Arizona was a whirlwind, leaving little room for planning or preparing meals."
"Humph... okay."
"You don't believe me?"
Instead of answering, Victor began collecting the scattered trays and empty bottles into the takeaway bag for disposal later. Evangeline rolled her eyes and let out a light chuckle. Once he e settled back down beside her, Evangeline instinctively started massaging his shoulders, feeling the tight knots beneath her fingertips.
"Hmm, that feels good," he said in appreciation.
"Your shoulders are tense." There was a sudden silence between them. "Still thinking about this morning?"
"Humph...yeah, yeah. It was that phone call I received afterward."
Evangeline's curiosity was piqued. "Do you want to talk about it?"
"We're having such a fantastic time together..."
"And my husband has something on his mind. If it's bothering you this much, then I need to know. Babe, I'm here for you. I hate it when you keep me in the dark. Please talk to me."
The ache in her voice compelled him to relent.
"Okay, okay. The phone call was from Jack. Blair was in one of her moods, insisting that I'm keeping Sam away from her..."
"But you're not."
The reality was that following Blair's breakdown, Sam had been reluctant to see her, and Victor was determined not to force him to visit La Boulaie.
He gazed down at his clasped hands, experiencing the weight of these thoughts. "I really dread having discussions with you about Blair. She never completely disappears from our lives, no matter how much I wish she would."

Evangeline reached out, gently grasping his arm. He refused to look at her, seemingly lost in his conflicting emotions.
"Hey, look at me." After what felt like an eternity, his eyes finally met hers. A pained expression crossed his face. "Don't worry about it. Blair doesn't control our narrative anymore."
"I fear she controls other things, however."
"What do you mean?" Her concern was mingled with confusion.
"Jack told me that Starr canceled her trip. She isn't coming to Llanview after all."
Did she hear him correctly? "Starr isn't coming?" Oh boy! A sinking feeling settled in the pit of her stomach. She knew this news would shatter Victor, and she wanted to reassure him. "Maybe she had an emergency and will come another time. It happens."
"I doubt it," came his abrupt response. Hurt and disillusionment clouded his perspective. "It's too damn convenient. Our marriage ruined everything. I believe Blair is more upset about that than Sam not visiting."
Evangeline gestured towards him. He leaned his head on her shoulder, closing his eyes. Her familiar scent calmed his racing thoughts.
"He asked if I was okay. I knew he wanted to check in on me, but I told him I'm fine." He paused; the weight of his words hung in the air. "Is it wrong for me to want to reestablish a relationship with Starr? She was my daughter for eight years. Am I being delusional?"
She rested her head against his, her fingers gently stroking his hair as they sat together in silence, grappling with complicated emotions.
"No, you're not delusional. You're simply a great dad," she reassured him.
"It's also important to appreciate what I have right now," he murmured, intertwining their fingers "I truly have everything I need," He pressed a kiss to her cheek. "I have it all."
"We both do," she agreed. "And yet, it still hurts."
Victor sighed deeply. "Yes, it does." Another pause. I don't want you to leave; just stay with me. I need you right now."
"Okay," she whispered.
Before long, he rested his head in her lap, the tension easing as she gently caressed him.
Leaning down, she whispered softly in his ear, "Baby, relax. Just focus on all the people who love you." Her presence, words, and touch, combined with the music, created an atmosphere of lasting peace.
His eyes glistened with tears. "I don't like feeling vulnerable."
"Why not?" She asked.
"Vulnerability is seen as a weakness in the Lord family."
"And I believe it is a strength." Her eyes locked onto his. "It means you are willing to share your entire self with me, not just your best side." She paused, studying him. "You know me inside and out, and I feel like I'm just getting to know you all over again."
"Do you love what you are learning about me?" he inquired.
"I do... very much," she replied, flashing him that unmistakable smile that made his heart flutter.
"Vange," he said, and her breath hitched; that nickname hadn't crossed his lips in ages. Her gaze drifted past him; lost momentarily in the memories it invoked.
"What?" He asked, his palm gently rubbing her cheek.
"I hadn't heard you say that name in quite a while."
"Humph...I can never escape Todd Manning because, one way or another, he is a part of me, of us."
She kissed his palm. "Yes, Todd Manning is a part of you, but he's not the best part."
"You started loving Todd..."
"But I'm completely in love with Victor," she declared confidently.
He flashed a mischievous grin. "Promise me you'll never forget that." His blue eyes stared deeply. A surge of warmth radiated between them, and he added, "I can't bear losing you again."
"You will never lose me," she assured him.
A couple of tears slipped down his cheek, and she kissed them away. Then their lips met in a long, heartfelt kiss.
The Banner...
"Get out!" Viki's voice was sharp, echoing through the elegantly furnished office.
"I'll leave when I'm finished saying what I need to say," Lisa replied, a smug smile curling at the corners of her lips.

"I don't understand how you got past security," Viki spat, her face flushing a deep crimson with anger.
"Wow, was I on a persona non grata list, so it's not just my daughter you're concerned about?"

Viki shot her a piercing look, the tension thick in the air, before she reached for her phone.
"I hope you're calling your assistant to inform her that you're in the middle of a meeting," Lisa said coolly, adjusting her jacket.
"I'm calling security," Viki retorted; her tone laced with confidence.
A slow, cool smirk spread across Lisa's face. "If you make that call, I will make a call of my own."
Viki blinked in surprise, her mind racing.
"The Lord family may have millions, but Lord Enterprises needs working capital to stay afloat. Viki, I know you cherish your company. Don't push me to strike that match and watch it all go up in flames." Lisa's eyes were like ice, her expression stern and resolute.
With uncertainty gripping her, Viki slowly set down her phone, reluctant to call Lisa's bluff.
"Good, let's talk. I must say, I admire the aesthetic of your office," Lisa said, her voice dripping with feigned admiration.
Viki folded her arms, the fabric of her blouse rustling as she did. "Cut the crap. What do you really want?"
"It's quite simple, Viki: respect my daughter and her marriage."
"That's all?" Viki exclaimed, incredulous.
"You make it sound easy for someone like you," Lisa replied, sizing her up with a calculating glare. "In many ways, you embody the Lord legacy-dominance and control."
"Are you suggesting that I dominate and control Victor?" Viki retorted, indignation rising.
"I'm saying you intrude into his personal life far too often, and that needs to cease. Allow the man some space to breathe."
"Humph...I could allege the same about you and Evangeline," Viki countered sharply.
"Touche. Yet, I'm rarely present to do that," Lisa retorted, her words slicing through the silence.
Viki turned away; frustration evident in her posture.
"I'm confident that, with time, the relationship will improve. After all, you are family. It's in your best interest as well. Do we understand each other?" Lisa's tone was both icy and measured.
"Perfectly," Viki replied through gritted teeth, her eyes blazing with suppressed fury.
"I wouldn't want my investment to go to waste," Lisa continued, an amused expression dancing across her face. Viki's eyes widened, and disbelief washed over her features. "Call your lawyer if you doubt my words. It's been fascinating watching it all unfold, but I find the look on your face worth every penny."
Lisa snickered as she exited the room, leaving Viki in stunned silence, crumpling into her chair as the weight of the encounter pressed down heavily on her.
Southgate Cafe...

Layla had stopped by the bustling café to grab a quick lunch with her close friend, Miyah.
"Are you really sure about this?" Miyah's brows furrowed, a mix of concern and worry etched across her face. "You might run into... You know, him."
With a dramatic roll of her eyes, Layla dismissed the thought. "I don't care. I'm craving a Bulgogi Burger, and Southgate has the best in town. Nothing is going to stand between me and that deliciousness-not even Kang."
"Do you mean *that* Kang?" Layla felt a sinking sensation in her chest as Miyah pointed casually over her shoulder.
"Just go and pick up our orders. I promise this won't take long," she insisted, brushing off her unease.
She felt incredibly alone as she stood there, waiting for him to arrive. She briefly thought about her sister and all the challenges that she and Victor faced while shaping their journey to a lasting love.
---
Hey Daehyun
Hey Miyah
I wish you two would work this out already.
"Me too."
---

As she turned to face him, Layla felt acutely aware of her plain attire, which contrasted sharply with the effortless style of his dark jacket and well-fitted chinos.
She met Kang's gaze with a cold, piercing stare, her eyes filled with resolve. "Could you please let me move on with my life? We don't need to discuss anything else."
"You don't want to listen to me," he replied, desperation lacing his voice. The urge to reach out and hold her was overwhelming, but he resisted.
"Because you lied to me. That doesn't change who you are or what you did," she shot back, her heart aching with a mix of anger and sorrow.
"I can't undo these strong emotions," he said earnestly. The sincerity reflecting in his eyes almost unraveling the walls she had built around her heart.
Her heart felt like it was shattering into pieces. "Kang, please don't make this harder than it already is. We shouldn't revisit this relationship. Let's just cherish the good times we had."
"Is it because of my family?" He asked, his voice trembling.
"You are an amazing person. I once envisioned a future with you, but your loyalty to your family is a burden too great to overcome. They will not destroy me emotionally or physically because of our desire to be together," she said, stepping closer and speaking softly, "Please, let this go-for both our sakes."
"What if I can't? What if I do what you ask? Would that be enough?" He asked, hope flickering in his eyes.
She leaned in and pressed a gentle kiss to his lips, a bittersweet farewell. "I don't want you to anymore. It's best."
With that, she turned and walked away, her heart heavy yet resolute. Kang stood there, watching her retreating figure, still convinced that this wasn't the end for them-not by a long shot.
Chapter 12 by chocolate470
The verbal exchange between her mom and sister simmered with tension, while Layla remained on the couch, seemingly lost in her own thoughts, scrolling through her phone. The spacious living room was big enough for these titans to maneuver around each other with a mixture of stubbornness and bruised egos.

"And what does that have to do with anything? Unless you're saying I didn't change for the better."

"You allowed this town to replace who you were..."
Evangeline folded her arms tightly, trying to contain her frustration.
"You mean John, right? He is my distant past. I've grown immensely since then. Why can't you accept that I've changed? My circumstances in the past may have affected me, but look at my future. Victor is my husband, Mom. He is amazing. He loves me, and I love him deeply in return. The success of our marriage is our responsibility alone. How many times must I emphasize this?"
Evangeline shook her head subtly as she gauged her mother's reaction.
"Darling, I wasn't trying to interfere," Lisa insisted rather calmly.
"Really?" Evangeline scoffed, raising an eyebrow.
"I kept our conversation as civil as possible. In the end, we both understand each other. Besides, I mentioned that I like him. This new..."
"Mom," Evangeline snarled.
"Fine." Lisa grabbed an empty glass from the coffee table.

"Come on, Mom, Evangeline is clearly happy. Isn't that what you've always wanted for her?" Layla finally looked up from her phone.
Lisa's eyes flickered. "And what about you?"
"What about me? I'm doing just fine."
"Are you really?" Lisa asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Victor has officially offered you a position at his company, and it comes with some attractive perks..." Evangeline explained, excitement evident in her voice.
"I'm considering it, but I still have some unresolved issues to figure out."
"Are you still hung up on that guy? I wouldn't be surprised if your sister has no idea about your secret relationship with that chaebol," Lisa commented casually, tossing her hair over her shoulder as she strolled toward the kitchen.
"You mean, Daehyun Kang?" Evangeline's curiosity was piqued.
"Yes, him," Lisa confirmed, glancing back with a knowing look.
Layla pressed her lips together and then massaged her forehead, feeling the weight of Evangeline's questioning gaze.
"Lays, so Daeyhun Kang is actually a Chaebol?" Evangeline's tone shifted from curiosity to concern.
"Yes," she softly replied.
"Why was this relationship such a huge secret, especially from me?"
The sisters shared intimate conversations about their lives and loves, delving into the highs and lows, from joyful makeups to painful breakups. Layla realized she wouldn't have a satisfactory explanation.
Layla sighed deeply, her shoulders slumping. "Looking back, my whole relationship felt like a secret. We were always dancing in the shadows, afraid to step into the light..."
Evangeline's eyes widened as the realization dawned on her. "You didn't know the truth."
"All those months, he spun a web of lies. It never occurred to me that I had never met his family. Sure, I became acquainted with a few of his friends and a couple of cousins at casual outings, but I never once met his parents or siblings. Maybe I chose to ignore the signs - I enjoyed the blissful ignorance." She stood and gazed at the sunlight streaming through the window. After a moment, she continued. "I cherished our little bubble, but we were on the brink of crossing that line where a casual fling was evolving into something deeper, something real."
"Something lasting..." Evangeline softly echoed.
"Then he finally told me the truth, and it was then that I realized I was way out of my league. The thought struck me: what would it mean for someone like me to be associated with someone like him? I worried about the judgment from his family. My mental health would have suffered. I had to break it off, and that's where we are now."
"Yet you're still hurting."
Evangeline tried to embrace her sister, and at first, Layla resisted.
"Don't do this, Evangeline. Let's just concentrate on your upcoming wedding. I don't want my problems to overshadow your happiness."
"I'm pretty secure in my happiness, Lays. The "upcoming wedding" is just the encore to the life we are already building. As your big sister, it breaks my heart to see you like this. I've been down this road before. I understand that look and feeling pretty well."
"You love him, don't you?" Lisa's blunt question cut through the room.
"So what if I do? It's neither here nor there. I don't want to talk about it right now, okay." Layla turned away, rubbing her arms.
At that moment, Evangeline's phone buzzed with a notification, breaking the tension in the air.
With a hint of regret in her voice, she said, "I need to go," she said, "My dear husband is anxious to show me something he's been working on."
Layla offered her a gentle smile, and the sisters embraced.
"Lays, don't forget to call me later, okay."
"Okay," she promised.
As she left, she was hopeful that her mother would provide the comfort Layla needed.

At the Kang family residence, the living room exuded both luxury and formality. Ornate chandeliers adorned the high ceiling, while minimalistic decor emphasized a certain austerity. He would describe it as a gilded cage, with memories floating in every room and the atmosphere laden with "great expectations".
Daehyun stood tensely before his parents, his heart racing in anticipation. His father, a stern figure resembling an older version of himself with salt-and-pepper hair and a pinched expression, stood resolutely beside his mother. She sat rigidly on the plush, cream-colored sofa, her hands clasped in her lap, and her posture conveyed an air of unyielding expectation. Daehyun had always dreaded this conversation, fully aware of the outcome before a single word was spoken. His parents, deeply rooted in traditional Korean values, rarely wavered from their beliefs, even though their children had grown up in America, navigating a world filled with contrasting ideas and cultural influences.

Daehyun's father, Kang Byungho, stood tall with a serious expression etched across his face as he pointedly addressed his son:
대현아, 현실을 직시해라. 레일라(Layla)는 이미 떠났고 우리 가족과 어울리지 않습니다. 그녀와의 관계는 회사 경영과 사회적 평판에 영향을 미칠 수 있습니다. 그리고 당신은 그녀를 우리에게 소개조차 하지 않았습니다. 당신은 기본적인 존경심이 부족함을 보여주었습니다.
Daehyun, you must face reality. Layla has already left, and she does not fit with our family. Your relationship with her could affect company management and social reputation. And you never even introduced her to us-you showed a lack of basic respect.
Daehyun replied:
아버지... 무례한 모습을 보일 생각은 없었습니다. 나는 당신이 레일라를 받아들이지 않을 것이라는 것을 알았기 때문에 그녀를 소개하지 않았습니다.
Father... I did not intend to show disrespect. I knew you would not accept Layla, so I did not introduce her.
Daehyun's Mother, Lee Hyunjung, stared at him coldly, hands folded neatly:
대현 씨... 감정은 이해하지만, 현실을 무시하면 더 큰 고통이 따릅니다. 당신의 선택이 가문과 질서를 흔드는 것을 나는 좌시할 수 없습니다.
그리고 네 형제들을 생각해야 합니다. 진환, 서준, 민서가 너의 행동을 보고 무엇을 배울지 생각해 본 적 있습니까?
Daehyun... I understand your feelings, but ignoring reality will bring greater suffering. I cannot allow your choice to disturb the family and its order. And you must think of your siblings. Have you considered what Jinhwan, Seojun, and Minseo will learn from your actions?
He had always felt a deep emotional connection to his mother, sharing countless memories and conversations that shaped his understanding of the world. However, deep down, he recognized that she wouldn't stand by him in this particular situation. The stakes were too high; the family business, which had been passed down through generations, and their well-established reputation in the community were at risk. He could almost hear her voice, emphasizing the importance of loyalty to the family and the brand they had built, leaving him to grapple with the loneliness of his decision.
엄마... 제가 바라는 건 딱 하나예요. 나는 당신과 아버지께서 레일라와 관계를 맺기로 한 나의 결정을 받아들이시기를 바랍니다.
Mother... there is only one thing I wish for. I ask that you and Father accept my decision to be in a relationship with Layla.
Byungho interrupted:
Daehyun, even with your business, this family, the company, and the reputation we've built are part of your future. You cannot decide everything based on love alone. Your choice is emotional, and you will regret it.
저는 후회하지 않을 것입니다. 사랑 없이는 어떤 성공도 공허합니다. 레일라 없이는 제 삶은 완전하지 않습니다. 어머니, 제 마음을 이해해 주세요.
I will not regret it. Without love, any success is empty. Without Layla, my life is incomplete. Mother, please understand my heart.)
Lee Hyunjung, slightly turning away, said:
Daehyun... I do not sympathize with your feelings. No matter how much you love her, it cannot break the norms of our family. Reality is cold. Love cannot solve everything. Think of your siblings. Jinhwan is already stressed with company duties, Seojun is still indecisive, and Minseo could be confused. You must understand that one action of yours can affect the entire family.
Daehyun lowered his voice in desperation.
어머니... 저는 그녀를 사랑합니다. 하지만 형제들을 위해 조심스럽게 행동할 것을 약속합니다. 혼란을 주고 싶지 않습니다. 제발, 어머니의 이해와 허락만 원합니다.
Mother... I love her. But I promise to act carefully for the sake of my siblings. I do not wish to bring confusion. Please, I only ask for your understanding and blessing.
Byungho interjected:
Daehyun, even if I acknowledge your sincerity, you must suppress your emotions for the sake of the whole. One of your choices could disrupt the order of our family and confuse your siblings. We are not ignoring your feelings; we are protecting the future.
Daehyun clinched his fists; his emotions a mixture of anger and despair:
어머니... 저는 단순한 감정이 아닙니다. 제 삶의 중심이 레일라입니다. 부모님이 이해하지 못하시더라도, 저는 그녀와 함께하겠다는 선택을 멈출 수 없습니다.
Mother... This is not a simple feeling. Layla is the center of my life. Even if you do not understand, I cannot stop choosing a life with her.
Lee Hyunjung leaned back slightly with a stern look on her face.
Daehyun... No matter how strongly you insist, I must protect the family and its order. Your father is right. I cannot allow your choice. Love is beautiful, but it cannot change reality.)
어머니... 저를 믿어 주세요. 우리의 사랑이 진심임을, 그리고 행복할 수 있음을.
Mother... Please trust me. Know that our love is sincere, and that we can be happy.
You are living in a fantasy. Even if your love is sincere, the family's order and the impact on your siblings come first. You cannot lead with your heart. Feelings change, and cold reality sets in.
대현, 마음은 알겠다. 그러나 나는 여전히 네 선택이 어리석다고 생각한다. 그 길은 험난할 것이고, 후회할 수밖에 없을 것이다.
Daehyun, I understand your heart. But I still think your choice is foolish. That path will be difficult, and you will have regrets.
Byungho turned away with his hands clasped tightly behind his back.
Lee Hyunjung took a deep breath and stood ready to speak, locking eyes with her son.

당신은 당신의 관계가 사랑만으로 살아남을 수 있다고 믿습니까?
Do you believe your relationship can survive on love alone?
나는 사랑이 감정 그 이상이라는 것을 완전히 이해합니다. 그것은 선택이다.
I understand completely that love is more than a feeling. It is a choice.
귀하가 이 관계를 계속 추구하는 것을 우리가 허락할 수 없다는 점도 이해하십니까?
Do you also understand that we cannot permit you to continue pursuing this relationship?
허락을 구하러 온 것이 아닙니다, 어머니. 제 마음을 분명히 전하러 왔습니다.
I didn't come to ask for permission, Mother. I came to make my feelings clear.
부모를 버리겠다는 말로 들리는군요.
It sounds like you're saying you'll abandon your parents.
나는 당신을 버리지 않습니다. 당신의 반대에도 불구하고 나는 행복을 선택합니다.
I'm not abandoning you. I'm choosing my happiness despite your objections.
그 여자를 위해 어디까지 갈 생각입니까?
How far are you willing to go for that woman?
끝까지. 가족들이 나에게 등을 돌리더라도, 네가 우리를 인정하지 않더라도 나는 레일라와 함께 미래를 만들 것이다.
All the way. Even if the family turns its back on me, even if you never acknowledge us, I will build a future with Layla.
그 여자가 당신에게 그렇게까지 가치가 있습니까?
Is that woman really worth that much to you?
제발 그 여자를 '그 여자'라고 부르지 마세요. 레일라(Layla)는 내 성공의 부속품이 아닙니다. 그녀는 내 삶의 중심입니다. 같이 늙어가며 책임지고 싶은 사람이에요.
Please stop referring to her as "that woman". Layla is not an accessory to my success-she is the center of my life. She's the person I want to grow old with and take responsibility for.
그럼 그 사람과 결혼하고 싶나요?
So you want to marry her?
Lee Hyunjung spat out the question with a fierce intensity, her eyes narrowed and voice dripping with disdain, as if each word was a weapon aimed at her target.
그 선택으로 당신은 완전히 혼자가 될 수도 있습니다.
That choice may leave you completely alone.
아니요, 어머니. 레일라가 있다면 저는 혼자가 아닙니다.
No, Mother. If I have Layla, I won't be alone.
...부모의 반대를 무릅쓰고 하는 결혼이 오래갈 거라 생각합니까?
Do you think a marriage made against parents' wishes can last?
Daehyun paused, carefully considered the question, then said:
부모의 반대보다 더 무서운 것은 사랑을 부정하며 살아가는 삶이다. 나는 그런 삶을 살 수 없습니다.
What's more frightening than parental opposition is a life lived in denial of love. I cannot live that life.
그럼 이 대화가 마지막이 될 수도 있겠군요.
Then this conversation may be our last.
그럴 수도 있습니다. 그래도 저는 레일라를 사랑한다고, 그녀와 결혼하겠다고 말씀드려야 했습니다.
It may be. Even so, I needed to tell you that I love Layla and that I will marry her.
...당신은 정말 변했군요.
...You have truly changed.
아니, 어머니. 처음으로 나는 진정한 나 자신이 되기로 선택했습니다. 당신이 나를 키워 준 사람.
No, Mother. For the first time, I am choosing to be my true self. The man you raised me to be.

Daehyun stands silently, the weight of the house and his parents' judgment weighing heavily. Slowly, he bows deeply, a gesture of respect rather than submission, towards his parents. His hands are at his sides, posture straight, eyes briefly meeting their steely gazes. Without another word, he turns and walks toward the door, each step deliberate. As the door softly clicks shut behind him, the mansion falls into heavy silence, the Kang parents still watching with expressions that reveal nothing.

"Just say it, Mom-when will you finally get your act together, Layla?"
"Baby girl, that's not what I'm thinking at all," Lisa replied, her voice soft yet firm.
"Or is it, Layla? You really know how to pick them. After everything you've been through, you find a man with a legitimate business and no criminal record, and it still ends badly for you..."
"I'm just thinking I need to be here for my daughter right now."
In that moment, she allowed herself to be enveloped by her mother's warm embrace.
"Mom, I hope you're not disappointed that I still love him," Layla whispered, her voice barely audible.
"I'm not disappointed, baby," Lisa said, gently stroking Layla's hair. "I'm hard on you girls because so much is expected of us as Black women. With your father no longer in the picture, I feel this overwhelming need to be extra protective of you and Evangeline."
"I wish I could let him go," Layla admitted, tears spilling over. "He hurt me deeply. I allowed him to string me along, and it's hard to move past that. I hate that Daddy died before I could truly know him, before I had a chance to see the best parts of your relationship. Maybe if I had, I'd be better equipped to navigate love and heartbreak."
Look at me, Layla," Lisa said, meeting her daughter's gaze with understanding. "The key difference between you and Evangeline is that she learned to let go of the past and not let it define her future with Victor. If Daehyun is willing to fight for you, then maybe it's time for you to fight for your own happiness as well."
Chapter 13 by chocolate470
"So, what is it you want to show me?" Evangeline asked excitedly, leaning forward in the passenger seat. "And where exactly are you taking me?"
Victor chuckled, keeping one hand firmly on the steering wheel while the other intertwined with hers. Evangeline's skin glowed against the sunlight streaming through the window
"Calm down, beautiful. A surprise is a surprise. You'll either love it or not," his voice reassured.
"I'm not so sure about the ‘not loving it' part. Come on, Babe, just a tiny little hint?" with a playful pout on her lips.
"Nope. You're far too good at guessing." He lifted her hand to his lips and kissed it gently, sending warmth through her. "Relax; soon all will be revealed."
"I hope this doesn't involve being blindfolded."
"That's actually an excellent idea!" he teased.
Evangeline smacked her forehead in mock frustration, rolling her eyes dramatically. "This better be one of your best surprises, or there will be consequences."
"Gold, diamonds, dinner..." he suggested with a wide grin.
"Or maybe you in a waiter's uniform, catering to my every whim," she said with a smirk.
Victor paused, pretending to consider the proposition. "Hmm, I kind of like that idea," he replied, laughing.
"Of course you would."
They both burst into laughter.
"Promise there won't be any blindfolds involved."
"Good to know," she replied.
As they approached a traffic light, the car idled, filling the air with a low, comforting rumble. Victor turned his head to gaze at her, his charming smile making his eyes sparkle.
"Sweetheart, don't I always cater to your every need?" he asked affectionately.
"Always," she replied softly, leaning into a sweet kiss.
Once the light changed to green, they resumed their journey, the lively chatter shifting to their upcoming wedding. Evangeline was surprised by Victor's interest; he usually expressed indifference about the planning and details.
"What's this all about?" she questioned with amusement. "You once told me that as long as we look good, nothing else matters. So, what's changed?"
"I do... care," he admitted with a hint of sincerity.
"Yeah, right. Why do I get the feeling you're just trying to distract me?" she retorted, arching a perfectly sculpted eyebrow.
"Nah," he said, the glint in his eyes suggesting otherwise.
As the familiar skyline of Llanview receded into the distance, it was replaced by a picturesque landscape of lush greenery and sprawling open spaces. Evangeline felt a wave of nostalgia wash over her, mingling with anticipation. Although she recognized they were traveling to a place she had been before, the specific destination remained shrouded in mystery.
The hustle and bustle of the city had been left behind, giving way to an idyllic scene of serene luxury estates. Here, charming townhouses with architectural details and opulent mansions stood proudly amidst meticulously manicured topiaries. Towering ancient trees lined the roads, while colorful blooms painted the landscape with splashes of vibrant hues. The air was filled with the sweet fragrance and sounds of nature.
Victor eased the car to a halt beside one of the garden estates. He quickly exited the driver's side vehicle. With a warm smile, he opened the passenger door, extending his hand. She placed her hand in his and stepped onto a stone pathway.
"Hmm..I think I have an idea what this surprise might be."
"Really? Tell me," he replied with a teasing smile as they walked down the pathway arm-in-arm that led them past the grand open gate of the estate.
"We've both been so busy lately. This is a chance for us to get away and spend some much-needed quality time together before the wedding. And didn't you say that both of our phones should be placed on vibrate only?"
"Perhaps...yet there is also a chance for something even more special," he added with a playful wink, leaning in closer.
Evangeline raised an eyebrow, her curiosity piqued.
As they approached the grand entrance of the estate, they were greeted by a confident middle-aged woman in an elegant navy dress, her gold-rimmed glasses perched stylishly on the bridge of her nose. "Mr. Lord, it's lovely to see you again," she said warmly. "And might I ask, is this your lovely wife?"
"Indeed, it is," he replied proudly. "Evangeline, meet Mrs. Emma Coote. For a few years, she has been one of my best clients."
Evangeline smiled brightly as they shook hands. Emma then enthusiastically explained that she would be conducting a guided tour of the estate, showcasing its amazing architecture. Evangeline couldn't help but feel a wave of excitement wash over her at the thought of exploring the estate.
"My husband and I have often asked him to come over for a visit."
"By the way, where is Terry?" Victor asked.
He had an emergency and sends his warmest apologies. I thought about canceling, but I decided that wouldn't be fair to everyone else, especially when Victor finally accepted our invitation," she replied, her tone friendly and upbeat
"I'm so happy you didn't, Mrs. Coote. This place is absolutely stunning," Evangeline exclaimed, her eyes taking in the picturesque views. "What is this lovely area called?"
"It's known as Emerald Estates," Emma replied proudly. "I believe the name perfectly captures the serene beauty that surrounds us."
"Absolutely."

Victor pushed open the sliding glass doors, and both stepped onto the spacious back porch. Emma had left them to continue exploring the estate on their own. Evangeline paused, her fingers gripping the porch railings, feeling the breeze playing with errant strands of her hair and the warmth of the sun on her skin. She closed her eyes, listening to the sounds of nature, sensing the estate's serenity, then opened them, admiring the sculpted hedges, towering maple trees, and inhaling the fragrance of the blooming perennials. Victor quietly observed her every move, his right hand resting protectively on the small of her back.
"So, how are you enjoying the tour so far?"
"It has been amazing. I didn't expect her to give us a tour of the entire house. I truly enjoyed talking with her. She has a wonderful way of keeping you engaged with her stories. I especially loved the little treats she had prepared for us. What about you? You barely glanced at your phone since we started the tour."
"I've always dreamed of visiting this beautiful place with you, just like you mentioned earlier, for a special getaway.
She let out a deep breath, her expression softening as she reflected on the moment. "I really needed this break. Honestly, I think we both did. It feels good to be here, away from everything."
Suddenly, her gaze fell on a small table positioned discreetly in one corner of the porch. On it sat a bouquet of lavender roses.

"These are absolutely beautiful," she remarked as she approached the table and picked up the flowers. "They smell amazing, too. Thank you, Babe," she said, turning to kiss and embrace him.
He realized a long time ago that the simplest things brought her real joy.
"Honey, you enchant me every single day," he replied, staring deeply into her eyes.
"You do the same for me."
They shared another kiss, slow and lingering, losing themselves in the moment. When they finally pulled apart, their foreheads rested against each other, continuing to savor the intimacy between them.
"Sweetheart, I have something important to ask you," he said. Keeping his arms wrapped around her waist while hers encircled his neck.
"Oh...what's on your mind?" Her brown eyes sparkled, turning a shade of amber in the sunlight.
"What do you think about this place? Is it overwhelming?"
Her heart started to race with excitement. "Are you truly considering buying this estate...for us...for our family? It's for sale?" she asked breathlessly with a mixture of joy and disbelief, her eyes widening in anticipation.
"Yes...If that's what you want," he replied sincerely.
"From the moment my feet touched the ground, I knew there was something special about this place."
"Is that a yes?" Victor asked with a mischievous grin.
She nodded vigorously as a radiant smile spread across her lips. He pulled her into another passionate kiss, lifting her effortlessly off the ground and spinning her around. "Surprise!" he yelled, with the sound of their laughter ringing through the air.

"I wish you would leave," Daehyun said, his voice sharp and unyielding, rising from his drawing desk, a residential design blueprint lingering behind. "There is nothing more to explain about my situation because it's mine alone to navigate, and I'm done justifying it."
He felt a deep sense of apathy wash over him; he felt no desire to see or speak to any of his family members. Despite the close bond he shared with his younger sister, Minseo, he understood she would ultimately side with his parents in this bitter disagreement.
"Hyeongnim, nae mal jom deul-eoboseyo" (Brother, listen to me). Her voice was tinged with concern.
"I don't want you to be hurt..." Minseo pleaded, her dark eyes carried a mixture of worry and determination.
"You don't understand, Minseo. Everything is not as our parents want you to believe," he replied, frustration creeping into his voice.
"I can't believe a woman has made you want to walk away from your family."
"Dangsin-eun geugeos-e daehae mueos-eul algo issnayo?" (What do you know about it?) he shot back, sensing a growing tension between them.
"Naneun chungbunhi algo issda" (I know enough). She stared at him as if he had partially gone insane.
"Do you? Just go and take your bodyguard Seo-jin with you," He gestured dismissively, fully aware that her best friend was likely stationed outside the door, ready.
"Is this really how it has to be? Can't I talk to you or express my feelings? We are the closest siblings, and yet you choose to shut me out. In the past, you've offered me invaluable advice that I took to heart. Are my words worth so little to you, Hyeongnim.?" Minseo's voice trembled with hurt and desperation.
"You cannot advise me on this, Jamae," he responded coldly.
"I fear that you are throwing your life away for something that isn't worth it."
"Don't you want me to be happy?" he challenged, gripping her shoulders, his voice slightly cracking.
"Ye," (Yes) she replied softly.
"Layla makes me happy," he confessed.
Minseo's eyes narrowed as she observed him closely. "Your face doesn't reflect that. You look sad. The situation is too much, Hyeongnim. Jinjeonghan gajog-ui pum-eulo dol-aoseyo (Come back to your true family)
"And give up on a chance of true love?" He let out a heavy sigh. "Look, Minseo, I have to ask you to leave. Layla is coming over, and I'd rather avoid any confrontation with you and Seo-jin here."
"Fine," she huffed. She pivoted on her heel, striding quickly towards the door, muttering under her breath.
At that moment, Daehyun's phone buzzed, jolting him from his thoughts. His assistant's voice crackled through the speaker, informing him that Layla was already making her way up. Anticipation surged within him, but alongside it came a wave of anxiety; his pulse quickened as his mind raced, the words he wanted to say slipping away.
Meanwhile, outside, the atmosphere was charged as Layla, Minseo, and Seo-jin's paths intersected.

"Neo nunchi eobsjanh-a" (You have no nunchi), Minseo declared, glaring in Layla's direction. Seo-jin silently nodded.
"Nugulang tonghwa jung-iya?" (Who are you talking to?) "Ne apchimaneun neolbda." (Your apron is wide)
A self-satisfied smirk spread across Layla's face, reveling in the shocked expressions of the two women. "You don't have a monopoly on Korean insults, you know," she taunted before gracefully stepping into Daehyun's office.
After her heartfelt conversation with her mother, Layla felt a flicker of hope as she opened herself up to the idea of rekindling her relationship with Daehyun. The memories of their past-a whirlwind of laughter, warmth, and eventually heartbreak-still haunted her, casting a long shadow of doubt over her willingness to take this leap of faith. When Miyah excitedly shared that Daehyun wanted to meet and talk with her, Layla took a deep breath and accepted his invitation.

Now entering the room, the office was familiar to her, having visited countless times before. It featured a cabinet and shelves filled with rolled-up plans and a variety of reference books. The drafting table was cluttered with blueprints, sketches, and miniature scale models of buildings. Additionally, the walls were adorned with framed photographs showcasing the firm's completed projects. The center of the room was dominated by a polished mahogany desk that housed a laptop. The blinds were drawn, creating a setting illuminated solely by the overhead lighting.
Layla spotted Daehyun standing by his desk, looking just as she remembered, but somehow different. There seemed to be an air of maturity that hadn't been there before.
"Hi, Layla, it's nice to see you again," he greeted nervously. His gaze lingered on her, and in that moment, an unspoken understanding passed between them.
"It's nice seeing you too," she said, offering a shy wave. "I ran into two young ladies outside..."
"My sister Minseo and her friend Seo-jin."
"Ah, now everything makes sense," she murmured.
"Did they bother you?" he asked with concern.
"Nothing I couldn't handle," she replied with a soft laugh, brushing off the memory.
"You are looking gorgeous as always."
"Thanks," she replied, feeling her cheeks flush. "You are looking great yourself."
Yet despite the pleasantries, an awkwardness hung between them. Every word felt heavy with meaning, and neither seemed willing to dive into the deeper conversation that awaited them, an unspoken fear of reopening old wounds.

Then, in an unexpected gesture, Daehyun slowly sank to his knees and pressed his forehead to the floor, an act that stunned Layla into silence. She stood there, her breath caught in her throat, watching him with a mixture of astonishment and confusion as she tried to comprehend the significance of his gesture.
"Jeongmal joesonghabnida, keun silsuleul jeojilleossseubnida."
(I'm really sorry, I made a big mistake.)
"I'm sorry if I made you feel like I was ashamed to have you as part of my life. I'm sorry that I never showed you the respect that you deserved. Please accept my sincerest apology."
Tears filled her eyes. No one had ever reached out to her with such vulnerability, and she appreciated and believed in its sincerity.
Without thinking, she knelt beside him, her fingers lightly touching his shoulders. "I accept your apology," she said in a warm, steady voice.
They embraced each other and then rose to their feet.
"Where do we go from here, Layla? I love you so much, and I want to rebuild that bond we once shared. But I need to know...do you still love me?" he asked with uncertainty.
She took a moment to gather her thoughts. "I do still love you," she admitted at last as a gentle smile spread across her lips. Daehyun could barely contain his joy at hearing that. "But our relationship cannot be like it once was. We must communicate - no more secrets," she emphasized.
"No more, I promise," he replied earnestly.
Layla placed her palms on his shoulders. "I assume you had a talk with your parents."
"Yes, and it went as expected," he sighed with resignation.
Her brow furrowed slightly as she continued, "My mother mentioned that someone is trying to get your lease cancelled. She intervened, though I'm not entirely sure how; she has her ways."
"They've gone so far as to meddle with my clients, but that's not going to stop me from pursuing this relationship. I see a future for us, Layla. I want to build a life together."
Her right hand gently caressed his cheek, sending a warm feeling through him. "Are you sure? I don't want your business or life ot suffer because of our relationship, only for you to resent me later."
He pressed his forehead against hers. "I can't do this without you. You hold my heart, and I have no desire to reclaim it."
They leaned in closer, and finally their lips met in a slow, lingering kiss, deepening as if neither of them wanted to be the first to pull away until only the need for air forced them apart.
"You do realize the road ahead won't be easy," he softly said, his forehead resting against hers.
"I know, Babe, but I still want us. It's a risk I'm willing to take."
His eyes searched hers. "I never thought meeting and being with you would change my entire perspective on what I believe is important - what I'm willing to fight for."
Before she could respond, he stepped back slightly and reached into his pocket. When he pulled out a small red velvet box, Layla froze. Her breath caught, and her hands flew to her mouth as he dropped to one knee.
"My love," he began, his voice unsteady but sure, "I can't wait any longer. But if this is too soon for you, I will wait, however long it takes."
The world seemed to stand still.
"Yes," she said, the word breaking free through tears before he could even finish. "Yes."
He blinked, momentarily stunned by how quickly, how certainly she answered. "Layla..."
A soft, breathless laugh escaped her. "I didn't need more time."
Smiling now, he opened the box. Inside, the diamond caught the light, brilliant, sparkling. He slid the ring gently onto her finger, his hands trembling just slightly.
"It's perfect," she whispered.

He rose, brushing away a tear from her cheek. "Not as perfect as you," he murmured before leaning into a passionate kiss.
