“Again.”
“Again.”
The sickening sweet sound of flesh hitting flesh was the only thing that could be heard throughout the room. A man whose face had seen many battles, many lives and had the scars to prove it swung the blunt sword at his opponent.
The man was known as The Bear, for his great height and savagery in battle, rained down more blows against his opponent. He was picked especially for his commanding height and his fierce appearance. Ingetra heard the rumors around court about the man named The Bear, about his battle prowess and how no man alive has faced The Bear and won.
“Again.”
A girl no more than thirteen faced The Bear, her cheek bloodied her breathing labored, but her determination was unmatched. Her arms trembled with the weight of carrying both sword and shield. The Bears nearly colossal blows turned her arms into over cooked noodles. This wasn't the first of these “lessons”, as her mother would call them, nor would it be the last. While girls her age were sewing, cooking, tending fields and baring children she was learning the art of being a warrior.
From swordsmanship to archery and horseback riding, the young girl learned it all. Raised more like the first born son then daughter the princess was a match for any young noble boy in the kingdom.
Many of nights her mother came to her in the darkness and spoke of how women of their world were treated as if they were nothing. Her mother would tell her how men thought women are weak and stupid and that she refused have a daughter that was either one of those things. That just because she was at a disadvantage in life didn’t mean she had to stay that way. That women were never going to be nothing and were worth nothing. How easy it was to be mistreat because she was born a princess instead of a prince.
“But, how could you be nothing my child.” She would say often.
“You are as strong as iron and as beautiful as lace.” She would say so righteously.
Iron and lace, what did that mean to her, she was just a girl who still played with dolls and dreamed of marrying her Prince Charming. How was she supposed to be as unbending as iron and as delicate as lace? How was she so different than any other girl her age, how was she supposed to be better? Maybe she was too young to understand the almost feverish way her mother obsessed with making her strong.
“Again.”
The Bear could see that the as he and the girl faced off against each other, she was getting tired with each blow, each counterstrike each and with every little decision a warrior must make in battle. The Bear could see that she had enough, they would always be tomorrow or the next day for her to learn to fight.
This young girl would not become a skilled warrior overnight, she still had time to learn and grow. Her mother would have it be all or nothing, she wanted her to be a battle hardened warrior overnight.
“My lady, she’s had enough for today,” came gruffly from The Bear.
Her royal highness Queen Integra de Leon was the third queen of the great King Athelstan of Arcadia. Tall in stature and dark in looks she often attracted men to her beauty. She had a fierce intelligence that was unseen from any queen before.
Some say her beauty was unmatched by anyone in the king's kingdom, when the king saw her in his court he had to have her. It didn’t matter that he promised to marry another he had to have Integra. King Athelstan was a man who demanded the very best and anything less was not good enough for him. He promised the DeLion family any and everything in order to possess the only daughter of the great DeLion dynasty.
His first wife princess Surine of the Blacktower had the voice of an angel and looks to match, but soon the king tired of her. After her third miscarriage he cast her off for her inability to bare him princes. Her looks nor her voice could keep the king from ending their marriage and looking for his next bride. She died in a cold lonely castle by herself without family. That was no way for anyone to die and surely not a princess.
His second wife Ravenna of Vertias was mouse of a woman who wasn't gifted in looks or intelligence but made up for it wealth. Her wealth helped the King pay for his campaign to take over small surrounding kingdoms. The second year of their marriage she died in childbirth, she had given birth to a stillborn daughter. Rumors around court say he sought out a seer who told the King that she would only give birth to girls and with this knowledge the King treated her poorly. Some say it was the King’s neglect that caused the Queen to go into a early childbirth that sent her into a early grave.
The King wanted one thing above all else, a prince to bear his name like all the other Kings that came before him. He was from a long line of proud Kings that had proud princes, he himself had four brothers that carried his father's blood. With the birth of his daughter the King had been denied his one true desire, if the queen did not produce a son it would not bode well for her. Integra would not bend to any man whether he be a King or a bear of a man that was currently looking at her with contempt.
"Unfortunately for her it will never be enough, she has to suffer this life inferior in the eyes of men because she has been unlucky to be born a girl."
"A girl who one day will be a Queen, so she has to be twice as strong as anyone else."
The queen would not let her daughter be weak, not in mind, body or spirit. If her husband found out what she was doing he would likely kill her with his bare hands. Fortunately for her, he was off in some far land conquering its people and stealing its riches.
For the King's thirst for conquering lands and taking people's riches were only matched with his lust for flesh. Integra would much prefer him terrorizing neighboring lands then him anywhere near her persons. The fact that her family pretty much sold her to this barbarian for money and lands made her hate them in more than the king.
The king had no loyalty to her so her wants and dreams meant nothing to him, however her family should have considered her before making this ill-fitting match. They could only see the money and power they received through this union and not the life of one of their own they destroyed. Surely as if they plunged a knife in her heart the burn of betrayal severed all ties between Integra and her family.
Integra made her way over to The Bear and her only child, a child she would rather die than be weak. The world had taught Integra a long time ago that life wasn’t fair, life wasn’t going to sit back and give you what. You had to be strong enough to demand what you wanted and this was the only way she could make her daughter strong.
Leaning down to whisper in her ear she spoke softly, "You are iron."
Standing straight and just as poised as ever the Queen spoke one simple word to The Bear.
"Again."

3 years later......
Princess Seras of Arcadia should have been used to the looks of distain and annoyance that always came when she was in the presence of her father. King Athelstan the Mighty with his recent win the battle of the 3 serpents was given that title. He defeated the triplet princes of Katagarth and cemented himself as the High King of the midlands and lowlands. His rule could not be challenge by anyone, not by any would be King or distant relation.
In the last five years Arcadia had nearly doubled in size and many surrounding kingdoms sought peace with King Athelstan the Mighty instead of bringing down his wrath upon them. The King would not keep up with the constant fighting and conquering, the recent months have not been kind to him. The years had turn the once young King into a greyed version of himself.
The years had been kind to him in other ways, for he got his one desire. His fourth Queen, Lyse of the Green Isles just a fortnight ago bore him his prince. The Green Isles was a small kingdom in the Asper sea, made of many small islands they had no real military power to speak of.
To ensure that Athelstan the Mighty never turned his attention to his aquatic neighbors to the east they proposed he take their young princess as his next bride. Lyse was the King's type in every way, meek, good breeding and with a youthful beauty the King no longer processed.
Great feasts, jousts and games were thrown in honor of his royal highness prince Athelstan the Younger. Seras was truly happy to have a brother, it meant that King would finally be happy and she could hopefully mend the relationship with her father. His hateful eye would no longer be turned towards the useless heir that he never wanted. The princes birth meant that Seras was finally not under her father's watchful gaze, for his gaze was fixed permanently his one and only son.
In her personal chambers, was the only place that she felt like she could just Seras and not a princess where nothing was expected of her. Several of her handmaids were busy cleaning and organizing her dresses, jewels and furs. Now that her brother was born she would be most likely to sent to their estates in the Black Marshes. Castle Drom of the Black Marshes was given to her father in his first ever battle, the castle was the only thing left from an ancient noble family.
For the King it made the perfect prison for his daughter. Often, she and her mother were sent there when the King would be in a rage about the not having his heir. For Seras it wasn't a punishment, for there is where they could simply be a mother and daughter. Her mother didn't seem so distant, it was as there she was able to breathe.
Seras and Bear were able to train without the fear of being caught by someone looking for favor from her father. In the months that they were in the Black Marshes her relationship with the man only known as The Bear grew. He was her mentor, her only friend, not many good honest people tried to be her friend. The King's court was filled to the brim with people trying to get a head in life and they would use anybody to achieve their goals. The King's court could be a lonely and dangerous place for anybody.
"My lady, the King requests your presence in the throne room at once."
Nodding, she stood as tall as she could, smoothing hands over her skirts. Seras tried to calm her racing heart. A pit formed in her stomach at the news, her father had a way of making her feel like a small child. Walking down the corridor, she dreaded every step, no matter how much training, how much she learned to fight she was always a scared little girl in his presence. Noble men and ladies bowed and curtsied as she passed, each gaze eager to get her attention whether to gain favor or to sneer at her.
Stopping the doors to the throne room she waited anxiously for the doors to open. When she was a child she used to think that every time she came near them they would grow another 50 feet. Two weathered guards with giant halberds stood waiting for commands to let her pass. Neither spared her a glance, she could clearly hear her father's voice booming through the doors.
"Bring her in here before she ruins her good mood."
Taking a calming breath, Seras entered the massive throne room, bathed in crimson and gold. The throne room was a thing of splendor. Built 400 years ago by King Bown the Bold in the first golden age of Arcadia its high ceilings and strong pillars stood up to the test of time. Huge tapestries of great battles, old Kings and fabled creatures lined the great room. This was the only place Seras ever saw her father, on his throne throwing down criticisms and harsh words.
At the very end of room was a giant stained-glass window, when the sun would rise it would cast the room in reds, greens, golds and blues. King Bown built it for his wife Queen Herla the Merciful, for its told when the King's traitorous brother was brought before him to be executed Queen Herla threw herself at his feet and offered up her life instead because if he were spill the blood of his own brother the gods would never let him drink and feast at their table. The love she bared him was so much that she couldn't let him kill his brother for if he did, he would not to be able to reach the great feast with the gods. She would have rather she died to spare her King from his own vengeance.
Sitting on the great onyx throne of Bown, King Athelstan the Mighty looked down his nose at his first and only daughter. Grey now grew through is once jet-black hair and beard. Resting on his head was the crown of unification that is said to have been melted down by the first King of Arcadia Ultred the Unifier and father to Bown. King Athelstan wasn't the only one in the great throne room.
Standing to his right was his younger brother prince Alred, nearly completely different from his brother, Alred always had a smile on his face that would crinkle the corners of his eyes. Alred was the only family besides her mother that loved her and didn't distain her presence. His two other brothers Prince Marek and Ulric have never even set eyes upon Seras. As ambassadors to Hyoperia and the Green Isles they never came back to Arcadia.
Some say they preferred to stay away instead of being in the Kings presence. To his left sat his queen consort Lyse, her stepmother never treated her badly, but she didn't treat her with affection because she felt that would anger the King to do so. Lyse was beautiful, with her long golden hair and big bright blue eyes, but she was a meek thing that bowed to the will of those stronger than her. Seras was in such deep thought that she almost missed her father's next words.
"Now that my son has finally come, I need to do something with you."
"Your more than old enough for marriage and it’s time that you were someone else's burden", he said with a sneer on his face.
Seras was used to these types of insults from him, there was a time that they greatly bothered and upset her, but that time was over. In Seras mind he no longer had the power to hurt her any longer at least not emotionally. What she feared most from his was when he was quiet and brooding. For in his silence he was at his most harsh and cruel. Once when she was still a small girl her mother angered him so greatly he didn't allow them to see each other for a whole year, one of the worst times of Seras's life.
Smoothing down her teal a white lace day dress, she stood before the King unflinching.
Draped in the crimson and black colors of the ancestors of Arcadia, King Athleson stood from the onyx throne and came to stand in front of Seras.
"I see so much of your mother in you, she had the same villainess eyes." Turning from her as if the very sight of her angered him.
"In two days hence, you will travel to Hyoperia to marry prince Borin, then I can finally be done with you."
Marriage was not something thought it would ever happen to her, when she became the right age to marry her father kept putting it off and delaying. Now all of sudden she was to prepare to leave good or bad the only home she ever knew.
The unknown could make anybody fear taking the next step, but for her the next step was her freedom from her father. Bowing very deeply she would pay her final respect to her father though he didn't deserve it from her but after this day she would not spare him another thought. But before she could leave, she just had to say something to the man who was once her greatest tormentor.
"My King you are the most generous father the gods have sought fit to bless me with and I pray every day that one day they will give you what you so rightly deserve."
With a sneer the King sat back on his throne, gesturing to his left a nobleman stepped forward with a deep bow.
"Lord Rowan will escort you to Hyoperia and give you away in the Kings stead, now you may leave her sight for the last time."
With a flourish of his hand the King thoroughly dismissed her from his presence, with her head held high she left the King to his Kingdom and the future that he ever so wanted.
When Seras returned her chambers were in a complete frenzy. Ladies maids, attendants and household servants dashed back and forth while filling trunks and chests full of clothing and miscellaneous items. It seemed like the kings patience with Seras presence finally exhausted itself.
Six dressmakers sat in the middle of the room tirelessly sewing and hemming a very large and intricate lace dress. It looked like the dress has been in the works for months. It seemed the King was planning this for a while. Seras never even heard of a prince Borin and she’s only been to the castle at the Black Marshes let alone to a foreign land like Hyoperia.
Turning on her heels she started to make her way to the Queen’s chambers, this would be her only opportunity to see her baby brothers face at least once. For it seemed like the King would be rid her in the next few days. The Queen of Arcadias chambers never housed Seras mother. The King never deemed her worthy to be housed in the official Queen’s chambers because she neglected to fulfill her “duty “. After Lyse became with child, the Queen’s chambers were redecorated and now that the child was now confirmed to be a boy the chambers would be even grander than before.
This was Seras’s last chance probably to ever see the child that was so wished for, for so many years. Standing outside of the closed doors to the Queen’s chambers, stood two menacing men holding heavy looking halberds. It seemed that no only had the Queen’s chambers been upgraded but so had her security. Down the hall stood two other hardened men with heavy looking weapons and faces too.
“What is your business with the Queen mother”, sneered one guard with a deep slash across the middle of his face.
Curtsying deeply Seras replied, “ I wish to congratulate the Queen on your success on birth to a healthy prince and if I may see him before I depart.”
Huffing the angry looking guard grunted a low “wait here” before disappearing behind the solid wooden double doors to the Queen’s chambers. Raised voices and laughter echoed from beyond the guard. Waiting awkwardly around the other guard left standing, Seras palms began to become sweaty with anxiousness. After waiting several long awkward minutes the same guard reappeared but this time a petite slightly older woman with almost white blonde hair trailed behind him. This must be the infamous chief lady in waiting to her majesty, Elizabeth. Behind her back they compared her to a ghost because of her very pale complexion and her blonde almost white hair.
Sneering she looked down her nose at me with a most disgusted look on her face.
“Her majesty isn’t receiving any guests at the moment.” Soundly dismissing me she turned her back to me to return to the Queen’s chambers. Even the guard seemed to be dismissing her as he already had the door to her majesty’s chambers open and waiting for her to re-enter.
Seras in that moment snapped, “who are you turning your back on.” Seras almost shrieked. Trying to lower her voice she tried to rein in her temper but before she could say more the soft almost nasally voice of the Queen spoke.
“Elizabeth come back inside, tell her I wonder won’t be seeing her today, I’m bus.”
More laughter could be heard after the Queen’s dismissal.
Bowing almost mockingly Elizabeth waited for me to leave first, turning abruptly all Seras could hear was laughter.
What’s to Come by IPreferPatches
Seras’s chambers were still a flurry of activity, maids and servants were packing and removing furniture cause it all was part of Sera’s dowry. Including jewels, furs and of course a considerable amount of gold coins. One would think that seeing how Seras’s father treated her that her dowry would be me insignificant, but he couldn’t stand the thought of people looking down on him, so he made Sera’s dowry extravagant.
The dress makers we’re still sewing and altering the big silver wedding dress. Usually wedding dresses weren’t in such a bright color as silver or white but the colors of Hyoperia are silver and blue. They were working so intensely that they didn’t even realize Seras’s was back in her chambers.
“Finally the princess is marrying I thought she was going live out the rest of her days as a old maid,” crackled the oldest looking woman sewing.
“But she’s still so young,” replied a woman not that much older than Seras’s herself.
“She have been at least on her second child by now, psst you’re young and have three wee ones already.” Grumbled the senior dressmaker.
Be Seras’s could make her presence known, her chief lady in waiting Nan appeared, seemingly out of nowhere.
“I suggest you all hold your tongues and not in gage in idle gossip. Train attention to her majesty’s wedding gown in silence. Before you find ourselves out of employment, begging out on the streets.”
All gossip ended with Nan’s sharp chastising of there behavior. Seras’s then chose to make her appearance known. All servants and maids stopped all activities and bowed to their sovereign. Strict customs of court forbade anyone from raising their heads until the sovereign, released them from there show of homage to their sovereign. After several long minutes Seras allowed them to continue while promoting dismissing the dressmakers out of her chambers.
*************************************************************
I could barely sleep, two days wasn't a lot of time do get everything that needed to be done, I would not be making the journey to Hyoperia by myself. Traveling with me would be 12 lady maids, my master of records, my personal physician, 7 maids, my chamberlain, 300 guards, 150 squires, and four midwives.
I spent many hours going over everything about Prince Borin Cousland. Prince Borin of Hyoperia was young prince nor more than 19 years old. He lost both his father and mother not but a winter ago, he and his younger brother Prince Fendrel were the only ones left of the Cousland line, besides some distant cousins.
Lord Rowan had once spent some time in Borin's court, Borin was a tall man, lean and muscled. He was much sought after by many of princesses. Handsome, strong, Prince Borin had at sixteen proved himself a capable warrior in some small border issues in his kingdom.
While maids and stewards rushed from one end of Seras's chambers to another preparing for the four-week journey to Hyoperia. Chests of fine silks, furs and jewels where packed with the upmost care, the princess would be also taking handcrafted trinkets and furniture with her. The King did not leave Seras much time to prepare for her long journey. Lord Rowan came early in the morning to oversee that everything was running smoothly before their departure.
"Your majesty the Prince enjoys riding and hunting and great feasts, he's very kind and enjoys reading in his great libraries and going for long walks." Boasted Lord Rowan while he and Seras sat for afternoon tea.
Borin sounded more like a fair maiden then a King that Seras was set to marry in a few weeks' time.
"Lord Rowan, what type of man is he really, I want to know what I will be facing when we get there so I can prepare myself for what's to come."
"My lady, he was most agreeable and honorable when we last met, he welcomed me to his court and showed me great respect while I was there."
Lord Rowan was very rigid in when it came to social setting so Seras had to be blunter in what she was asking for.
"I will speak quite frankly my lord, does he whore around, does he beat his women or maybe he doesn't like women at all, these are the things I must know if I am to survive in his lands."
Lord Rowan was taken back the way the princess was speaking to him, never had woman spoken so openly to him before. He did not know how to respond to the princess's questions, this was most unladylike behavior.
"Your majesty, I don't think this is appor-"
"My lord, I haven't time to waste with what should be and what should not be ladylike, these things I ask you are not meant to shock you but important facts I need to know of my future husband, now please tell me what you know of him."
Lord Rowan took a minute to respond before saying as honestly as he could, "he does enjoy the company of woman and from what I have seen he treats them respectfully."
With a nod of my head I promptly dismiss Lord Rowan so I can continue to prepare for my journey. Many servants were moving in and out of her chambers, I felt that I needed a bit of fresh air to clear my head. As I was leaving my chamber I noticed two young servants were moving a large chest with a lion with a heart in its mouth. That was the crest of the De Lions of Anvalor, one of my mother's trunks.
"John, Sam let me see the trunk."
Stopping the two boys set the trunk down before bowing away respectfully, bending slightly she ran her fingers over the craved weathered wood. My mother left me many things, jewels, furs, paintings but she had never seen this trunk before. The strangle thing about it was the it was that it was locked and she did not have the key.
"My lady my I have a moment of your time," came gruffly behind Seras.
Turning quickly, she looked into the face of the one person that gave her comfort above all else. The years have made the weathered lines of his face more prominent, but this was the face that for years had seen her through very important parts of her life.
"Bear, is everything almost set for our journey to Hyoperia." .
"Our?"
She was taken back by his tone; did he really expect me to travel all those miles to a place she had never been without him. To a place where she didn’t know anyone, place where she had no allies save for the ones she brought herself.
"Of course, you're coming with me, I wouldn't leave you here for anything in the world."
"But, what will you father say about it, I'm a sworn sword of the crown, my life is for your father to do with as he pleases."
"I already spoke to Lord Rowan, he has spoken to the king on my behalf and the king has transferred your oaf to me as part of my three sacred vows."
"My lady, I don't you to waste one of you sacred vows on something as unimportant as me," he replied almost as if he was angry with her.
Seras's didn't understand why he would be angry, for any royal bride of Arcadia three sacred vows are given. These vows are three unbreakable promises that the king has to grant for the bride, its Arcadian custom that these vows must be binding.
Her father being as clever has he thinks he is withheld her dowry so she had to use one vow in order to receive it. Her second vow was used because he was going to remove, burn and have my mother's statues destroyed. He argued since she would no longer be living in his palace these things were useless to him now.
As if he kept these memories of her mother as comfort for her. The only reason that he didn't have them destroyed the second he learned of her mother's departure was that the people and many lords and ladies favored her mother so greatly.
So now she was left with one vow and she would use this vow on something of her own choosing, she chooses to take her bear from this place and see where our future would take us.
"My Bear, if you think the love and affection I have for you is wasted I wish you would have told me so years ago I could have not wasted my time", she said with a laugh.
At these words he turned to her with what many would think was a grimace, but she knew it to be a smile. She was the only one in the whole world that would away with the teasing him, she was the only one that called him "my bear."
"My lady, I miss spoke nothing would honor me more than to pledge my sword and my life to you, but I could have appealed to the king in order to pledge myself to you."
"My Bear he would have never agreed, he is a spiteful thing that can't see pass his own vanity, two of vows were taken from me without anything I could do about it. I refuse to have my last vow wasted on some trivial trinket, you my Bear are the most important thing in Arcadia to me."
"You are coming with whether you like it or not and now that will be last I hear of it."
At these final words she bowed to her Bear and promptly left him to continue to oversee that everything was packed, for tomorrow morning they would set out for Hyoperia.
****************************************************************************
The next morning:
Everything was packed, the horses were ready and they were all set to go. Her farewell party was only made up a few noblemen and their families and her uncle. The King of course didn't come nor was she expecting him to come.
What she was expecting was to at least be able to see her brothers face for the first time. She was not permitted to see the prince at all and the Queen also was also absent. The King felt that since she was no longer technically part of his family she has no right to the Prince. A final cruelty towards his first child, this would be the last time Seras would be able to see him and she would be denied. Sera's thoughts were interrupted by her uncle coming to see her off as part of the royal household.
"My beautiful niece my heart aches knowing now that you will leave us to be a Princess no more, for when we next see you, you'll be a Queen."
"May the gods favor you and have you as a guest at their great feast," her uncle said with a kiss upon both of her cheeks.
Smiling at his words he kissed me on her hand and embraced her for the last time, for although his words were kind she would never return to this place again. The thought was bitter sweet for she was born within these very walls. Good or bad this was home to her for so long, in some aspects she would miss it greatly for this is where her mother's memories was and were she made her strong.
This was also the place where she knew all forms of pain whether the pain of being treated most unkind by the very person that ought to have protected her. To the beatings she would receive if stepped out of line at any provocation. Smiling she would not give anyway anything she was feeling, this would be a good farewell not one to dwell on the past.
"Kneel Lord Rowan," commanded Alred.
Kneeling Lord Rowan waited anxiously to be bestowed patronage from the royal family, for with his current status he wasn't worthy to present a princess to a King.
"Lord Rowan on your honor you will protect and serve your mistress from this day to the last, I give you the patronage of my house."
"Your grace with everything I am and all that I have, I pledge myself to Seras Integra of Arcadia now and until my last breath."
"We know that our princess is in good hands, you my rise Lord Rowan and may the gods favor you and one day have you as a guest at their great feast."
Rising Lord Rowan and Seras bowed to her uncle and went to prepare for our journey, as afforded to her as a princess a payers and offerings had taken place in her honor early this morning. She and one hundred revered brothers and sisters prayed to the gods for fortune, health and safety in all things ahead.
Seras would travel mostly in a very large carriage with her ladies' maids for her comfort, she was supposed to travel the whole journey in the carriage but she convinced Lord Rowan to allow her to travel some of the journey on horseback. It would keep her riding skills sharp and allow her to see her homeland for the first and last time.
Altogether the trip would take four weeks to get to Hyoperia and Seras could not take the journey sitting in a carriage trying to entertain myself. This was the first-time she was free, she was allowed to travel to different lord and ladies keeps and see the surrounding areas. She was excited to see all the lands and places on their journey.
"My lady I would prefer you take the first part of the journey in the carriage."
"I will do no such thing Bear, I want to feel the wind on my face before you put me back in my cage." Laughing a squire held her horse, a gift from her uncle a Nemean mare.
Nearly untamable, Neman mares take years to gain their trust in order to ride them and even longer to keep riding. Megara was a beautiful mare of a sable coloring; strong willed and temperamental she was one who command respect above all else. Neman horses are prized for their think nearly impregnable hides, they made the best war horses.
"You put grey hair in my beard, my lady." Gruffly replied bear.
"Now we leave this place my Bear and now we will see what's to come."
"Yes, my lady."
The Road by IPreferPatches
Green rolling hills and rich valleys greeted us in our journey to my new home. We passed villages, cities, farms and houses. People greeted us as we passed through their homes, children ran behind our carriages and horses laughing and trying to give me and my ladies flowers. I had never seen so many of my own people before, my father did not let me leave the castle grounds before.
I had never in all my years seen so much of the country I lived in my whole life. My father deprived me of more than I even knew, I would never get to know my people the way a monarch should.
I would never know the rich valleys and fertile lands my birthplace had to offer. For now I travel hundreds of miles to a land I've never been to, to live my life forever with people I've never met before.
Some nights of our journey, I would stay awake at night uncertain of what the future would bring. Childish dreams and wants would now be cast off, for now I would be a queen and a mother to a nation. Simple sentiments would no longer do, by the end of this journey I would grow into what I needed to be.
As we travelled Lord Rowan would continue to educate me on the lands and customs that I needed to be well versed in. Hyoperia was lush and fertile place, many farms and wildlife flourish in this kingdom. Hyoperia was renown for their warships that were crafted with the best materials that the land had to offer.
Arian stags were rare and beautiful creatures, smooth silver pelts that glistened. Their beauty was so sought after that the king made them his sigil so that no one dared to kill them.
The midwife would go over what was expected of me on my wedding night. Lord Rowan wasn't too happy about these parts of my "lessons", I gather we would rather I stayed virginal in every sense of the word.
Lord Rowan made sure I became well versed on whom was close to the king, Lord Rutherfort was the king's top advisor. The Rutherfort family started out as simple boat makers who pulled themselves out of obscurity and became the biggest contributor to the kings warships. His son Bial would be meeting us outside the Silver city the capital of Hyoperia. From outside the city he would escort me, Lord Rowan and my ladies maids to the city in front of our part where I would be presented to the King in his court.
Already three weeks had passed, in the days and weeks that passed I had not once trained. Hours spent in the carriage or mounted on Megara, my fingers flexed for sword and shield. I didn't trust not to be caught by one of the many people that were constantly surrounding me all day. I would have to wait until I found someplace that I felt safe to continue my training.
At the last great keep in Arcadia on our southern borders is the home of Lord and Lady Saville, they would be hosting us on the last few days we should be spending in Arcadia. The Savilles were great supporters of my mother and privately Lord Rowan told me that they greatly disliked the king and his policies
Here we will water our horse, rest, and restock on any supplies that we need, Heartstone was the Saville’s keep. Centuries old, Heartstone was a thing of classic beauty, Lord and Lady Saville were waiting for as our party entered there court yard.
"Your majesty, you greatly honor us with your presence." Lord and Lady Saville gave deep bows and curtsies and welcoming smiles.
"No, my lord, it is me who is honored that you would allow me into your home with such warmth and kindness."
"We have prepared a wing for you so you my rest before we break for supper late this evening." Lord Saville led me into Heartstone, Lady Saville trailed behind me as we entered the great hall.
And
Faces of long passed lords and ladies looked down on us as we ascended the stairs to the wing I was given, for my stay. Several rooms had been made ready for me and my lady's maids, Lord and Lady Saville left me to get cleaned up and prepare for evening supper. They would be hosting our party for four days while we prepared for the last two weeks of our journey.
A bath was drawn, for me to relax my sore muscles from the journey, my chambers were a frenzy of activity as maids and servants went to unpacking and getting my evening clothes ready for dinner tonight. I dismissed my lady's maids to from my chambers to eat and rest themselves do that I may take my bath in peace. I had all but one maid stay behind so that she may complete a task for me.
"Claire, I need you to find The Bear and have him meet me in my chambers after supper, not before it isn’t that important that he needs to rush here, so that I may speak to him later."
Claire a young redhead was one of my new maids, that I bought with me, freckles splashed across her face. She was a shy girl who would often bow so deeply in front of me that it was like she was lying on the floor. This time was no different as soon as I dismissed her she scurried to find The Bear.
*****************************************************************
Knocking on the chamber door, Claire was granted permission to enter by a muffled voice on the other side of the door.
The Bear's chambers were a simple room with a large bed with a fire burning brightly in the hearth. The man known only as The Bear was sharping his sword, the scraping of the whetstone against his sword is the only noise coming from The Bear. Bowing ever so deeply Claire timidly spoke out.
"The princess requests....."
Suddenly The Bear looked up from sharpening his sword to peer at the young woman trembling before him. She looked like she had just seen a ghost the freckles on her face stood out more prominent on her face. A faint red blush was creepy from her neck to her cheeks.
The Bear filled the entire room with his presence, the man was large in stature he was adeptly named. Bushy eyebrow rose over intense green eyes, he was wanting for the girl to finish speaking. He has seen this girl before as he was preparing for their journey she would often gaze upon him when she thought her wasn't looking. Her look was of longing she would shy behind people and things in order to look on me from afar.
Gulping she spoke, "Her majesty request your presence in her chambers."
I dismissed her with a nod of the head, and she scurried from my chambers in a series of skirts and earnest to get away from me. Putting away my sword, I prepared to meet my lady to see what she wanted to speak to me about. Walking though the corridors to my lady's chambers I enter without knocking, something I immediately regretted.
Climbing from her bath, Seras stepped out of the tub. She had not heard me enter her chambers as, her back was turned towards me. Gentle feminine curves led to hardened muscles that time and he sought to personally define. Water cascaded down her body as she bent to pick up her robe, I took a sharp intake of breath.
My heart started to beat in my chest at the sight of her. She must have heard me, spinning around she clutched her robe to her nudity while brandishing a dagger I did not know she had. Under other circumstances I would have found this situation funny. There was nothing funny about this situation though.
I could not take me eyes off her, her breast trembled with every breath she took. They were more than a hand full with nipples darker than the rest of her breast. Water glistened on her chest as the bath water rolled down her chest. We couldn't take our eyes off each other both of us didn't want to move in fear that the other would say. Slowly she dropped the robe, smooth chestnut color skin was all I could focus on. Her stomach was flat, her thighs were shapely and muscled from time spent training in secret. Just as stepped towards her, the chamber door opened and footsteps led towards the room.......

Chapter 5
Quickly she directed The Bear to a closet in the corner of the room with a nod of her head, even quicker she had her robe on before Claire and two lady's maids entered her chambers.
"Lord Rowan would like to speak to you on some matters before supper this evening my lady."
"Please offer Lord Rowan refreshments and ask him to forgive me for making him wait while I get dressed."
Claire looked around has if she was searching for someone, "If that is all Claire go see to Lord Rowan."
Bowing they went to do her bidding and help her get dressed for dinner, trying not to draw attention to herself calmly walked near the closet.
Under her breath, "Stay in there until I finish speaking to Lord Rowan, I'll have him take me on a walk and make sure my ladies leave, then met me in the gardens after supper is done."
Seras was furious, how dare he just barge in now instead of coming after dinner like she asked. She couldn’t believe she dropped her towel like that, like some tart trying to seduce him.
“My lady you’re flushed, was the water in your bath too warm. Nan said with concern etched all over her face.
“Nan I’m fine, the water was more than adequate.”
“Get me dressed quickly Lord Rowan is waiting. Seras said hurriedly.
******************************************************************
The closet he was pressed into was where Seras keep her clothes and jewels, all around him it smelled of her, lilacs and sandalwood. He still could hear footsteps and voices through the door, it would be a while before they would be finished talking.
How did he get himself in this situation, he thought he finished making careless mistakes in his youth?
Like most tales his didn't start in the beginning, but a defining moment that started it. His was a simple tale. He once loved a woman, loved her as much as a man in this world could. He would lay down his life for those he cherished the most.
Her name was Clara, and she was the prettiest girl in his village and she knew that. Many men fell victim to her smiles and flirtations. She used her looks to make men bend to her will never caring about their feelings just hers. Her looks got her whatever she wanted but she always wanted more.
Many men lost all good sense when it came to Clara, big green eyes where set in soft feminine face with pale ivory skin. He was no different, in his youth did himself a disservice for he couldn't see her for the viper that she was. Clara thought see deserved everything fit for a queen, she just couldn't find someone who could afford it, yet.
Until then she settled for his attentions, just giving him enough attention and care for him to want more. As a son of a blacksmith his fortune was a thing of his mind, something he would dream of at night as a possibility not a certainty. Before he met Clara, he did not have ambition for wealth or renown. Fortunately, he was chosen by a knight to be his squire, under his guidance he was taught all things having to do with battle. At thirteen he left home to journey with Sir Elin and be his second in both battle and life.
Sir Elin was a good knight and even better man, fair and honest he taught me that he could make something of myself. He told the true measure of a man is not where he started but where he finished. He learned a lot in the years he spent with Sir Elin, He respect him very much.
He was also able to gain money and some renown but this wasn't good enough for Clara. She wanted a man with lands, titles and wealth things that he did not have and never wanted. Clara made him many promises, how we could be together once he returned from battle.
Each battle he went, each victory he had, he did it to make Clara happy. All her promises were for nothing, when he returned she was with child, a child that could not his. With tears streaming down her cheeks she begged him to forgive her.
She told him a tale of how a man spun her lies. This deceiver said that he would marry and take care of her. The man left with no word and she was left with a child in her belly. Like a fool, he believed her. On that very day he made her a promise that she and the baby would be taken care of her. So he took responsibility and married her, for a unwed mother had no prospects in life.
After many months, Clara gave birth to The Bear’s heart and his name was Kristoff. He was his son, although his blood did not run through Kristoff's veins. He was his and The Bear loved him more than his next breath. He worked hard to make sure Kristoff was taken care of and loved. Kristoff loved to laugh and play, many days he struggled to get him to bed the small boy loved to run all day.
He was blessed by the gods for his son, for a happy healthy son. He wasn't so fortunate to have Clara as a wife. She didn't share his opinion of Kristoff, she saw him more as a burden then as a gift. She still wanted a rich and powerful husband, but instead she got him. The first two years of Kristoff life she seemed content although more disappointed with the life she was living with him and Kristoff. It had seemed that Clare was coming to terms with her life. Then, one day she left and never returned, months later he found out she ran with a merchant who had money and was even more gullible than him. He was finally able to live contently with someone who loved him unconditionally and he became peaceful in his life.
He would spend hours at night watching him sleep, praying to the gods that no harm would ever befall him. However, peace was not for him, the last days of Kristoff's life was a bitter one. Crops froze and people went hungry. Children died in the night in their mother's arms. Kristoff got sick, as days passed he kept getting sicker and sicker. No tonics or medicines made him better, no healers or priests made him better
Finally, after days of pain and agony Kristoff went to feast with the gods forever. The Bear went mad with rage, he blamed the gods, he blamed Clara, Kristoff’s bitch of a mother and he mostly heartily blamed myself. For all his skill on the battlefield, he couldn't protect the one person that he would die for.
Four years with Kristoff wasn't nearly enough time, in twenty-three years of his life he never felt pain like this. Everything he did was to try to escape the pain, so he tried to shut myself off from his feelings. He decided to abandon the only place he called home and the ghost that haunted it. He travelled, fought in lands across the world, bedded whores and noble women that were more beautiful than the last. He did all of these things until he couldn't feel anymore until one day he ran across a knight.
He hadn't seen Sir Elin in nearly five years, he was well and had just welcomed a son of his own. Over ale they caught up on all the years that parted them. Sir Elin then asked him a favor that would change his future. Sir Elin’s sister needed a guard to protect her daughter, she needed someone that she could trust. Someone who the King couldn’t intimidate and spy on the Queen like others had done in the past.
She despised her husband and wanted someone of his reputation to protect her and the princess. She heard of The Bear’s fighting prowess and wanted him to serve her. At first, he outright refused his offer, he didn't need to waste his time protecting some weak spoiled little girl.
However, he was starting to grow tired of the wandering and consist fighting, he was starting to feel maybe he could try again to set down some roots. So, he agreed, to pledging myself to Sir Elin’s sister. Sir Elin just forgot to mention that his sister was Queen Integra de Leon wife of King Athelstan one of the most powerful Queen’s living.
She was a cold and rigid woman, but who could blame her with the asshole of a husband. King Athelstan was self-righteous prick that thought he was the gods gift to everyone, the only reason the people didn't rebel against him, was that they were afraid of him. Living with a man like that couldn't be easy, she still was a frigid bitch. She looked down her nose at him as if he wasn't good enough to be in her presence.
The first time he met them both it seemed that she could barely stand his presence, her cold shrewd eyes judged him as if he was nothing.
"Bring the princess in."
Flanked by two ladies came a girl no older then eleven or twelve, tall for her age she looked older. She was pretty and one day would be beautiful if her parents didn't crush her under the weight of their own expectations.
Every move she made was calculated, her bow was refined and poised. It was if she made a move out of place her mother would come down on her with that ice queen persona that she gave everyone in the room. Before me was future of a kingdom, the only child of two great houses.
"May I present you to, princess Seras of Arcadia."
***************************************************************
Finally, after what felt like an eternity of Lord Rowan speaking on how to conduct herself in the presence of other lords and ladies, he was done speaking. He acted as if she was shut in her room all her life, not a princess trained from when she could walk and talk on how to be perfectly proper.
She was able to usher him out of her chambers so her ladies' maids could finish getting the Princess ready for the evening meal. After his departure, she ushered everyone out of her chambers so that she may get The bear out of her chambers without incident. Knocking on the closet he exited looking around to make sure nobody was around.
"There's nobody here, although I'm considering getting my guards to escort you to the nearest dungeon."
"My lady I shouldn't have entered your chambers without your permission, I apologize for my lack of respect," he said staring boldly in her eyes as if he were her equal.
"I don't want your apologizes, you haven't the right to look at me like that, I am your sovereign not some chamber wench you wish to bed, we both lost our minds not but an hour ago.” At this point she was pacing across her chamber trying not to raise her voice and alert everyone to her distress.
The Bear made to step forward the Princess. She put up a hand halting his process toward her.
"Don't, you made it very clear years ago that we could never be so don't. I will not allow you to toy with my emotions no matter how much I wished were different. In two months', time I will be the Queen of Hyoperia and no longer will I indulge in this madness anymore", her voice neither quivered or faltered as she regally stared down the man known as The Bear.
The Bear recognized the fire in her eyes because he no longer tried to come closer to her. There was a time that she would have gave up her title and wealth to be with him but he denied her at every turn. He couldn't turn around and changed his mind now that she was on my way to be married, she wouldn't have it
"You may now leave my presence, you will prepare my wedding party for the last part of our trip, we will not speak of this again."
“You no longer need to seek me out after dinner either.”
He looked as if he wanted to say more but he understood that she would no longer discuss this with him. She didn't even hear the door close behind him because in that moment she burst into tears for the first time in years. Tears of regret, loneliness, hurt and above else on what could have been if she wasn’t a Princess soon to be Queen.
Unknown to The Bear and the Princess, Claire hadn't left to wash linens or clean shoes, she was listening at the door. She quickly fled when she heard footsteps coming to the door, hiding behind a pillar she saw The Bear stalking away from the princess's chambers. She did not look happy on what she overheard moments ago in the Princesses chambers and by the look on her face she wouldn’t let this rest quietly.
The Journey by IPreferPatches
Chapter 6
Dinner was joyful affair, Lord and Lady Saville made Seras feel very welcome in their home. The whole evening was filled with stories of her mother's youthful adventures. She didn't know her mother spent her summers here at the Saville estate. Lady Saville grew up with her mother, they spent many summers nights dancing at balls and riding through the countryside before they were married off.
Lady Saville told her many tales during my visit on how sweet and kind my mother was when she was younger. Seras couldn't believe that they were talking about the same woman. Her mother seemed so young and innocent when she was a girl, unlike the cold Queen that Seras called mother.
Her brother Sir Elin would spend some of the summers of her youth here with her, they were very close when they were younger. My mother was the youngest of nine children with only two of them boys. My mother was not expected to get a good marriage, there were six other sisters that came before her. Her only saving grace was her beauty, some minor noble would want her just for that simple fact.
King Gregor was the oldest son of the De Lion family, Seras never met her uncle. From what she was told of him he never cared much for the other members of his family anyway. He never went to Arcadia to give away his sister in his father's stead or send gifts when his niece was born. He never sent word when he learned of his sisters demise or on the news of his nieces' marriage. Her mother was no older than eight years old when her father died, her mother had died in childbirth years earlier.
So, that left all the De Lion children in his care, he married off all the ones that could marry. All the ones that were too young to marry were sent to live with lords and ladies in different lands. Seras and her mother had that aspect in common of their childhoods, their families did not treat them as they should.
Seras mind couldn't help but to think back on what had happened earlier. No man had ever seen her like that before, his eyes upon her body. It heated her skin and made her feel things she had never felt before. There was a time in her life where the only thing she ever wanted or needed was her Bear.
Today is my birthday and I couldn't be more excited, father was off in battle. He wouldn't be back for months. Last year he wouldn't allow me even the smallest celebration, a rumor in court said my mother was pregnant. When it turned out to be false, he punished both me and her. I spent my birthday alone, I could even take my bear with me. For weeks I was alone with only one maid and a small handful of attendants and guards around me.
This year was different; father wasn't here and I am able to celebrate however I wanted. I loved to dance and mother like everything else made sure that I was good at it. A ball is being thrown this evening in honor of my birthday.
Lords and ladies from all over the kingdom had been arriving in honor of my birthday, although most of them would be whispering about me and mother. I refused to let them ruin my good mood because for once today is all about me.
A great ballroom was decorated in my favorite colors of gold and red, my favorite foods where prepared for tonight. Singers and musicians would be playing music throughout the night, acrobats and fire breathers would entertain my guests. A beautiful gown of Damascus and silk was made for me, I felt like a princess more than ever before.
Since it was my day to do as I pleased I would have the Bear escort me to my party, it would shock my guest to see me enter on the arm of The Bear. I did not care what anybody cared about today for is was my day to do as I pleased, and it pleased me to have my Bear. My Bear was strong and loyal, to others he seemed gruff and angry. To me he was always kind and patient.
My dress was red silk with intricate black designs, my jewelry for tonight was black diamond laid in gold. My chambers were a flurry of excitement, my lady’s maids and staff had never been allowed to attend balls because of me. Tonight, we would all dance, drink and eat as if the gods themselves were our honored guests. I can barely sit still as my ladies fixed my hair and prepared me for the party.
Suddenly there was a hush around the room, I turned to look upon The Bear. He was a commanding force just like when I met him those years ago. Dressed in all black he was an imposing force in the room, never before had I seen my Bear dressed in such fine garments. My ladies looked afraid to even breathe in his presence. On the other hand, I could barely contain my excitement on seeing him.
Ever since my mother informed me that The Bear would be taken over my "lessons", the man who came before him was hesitant to teach me any combat. He constantly complained to my mother that it wasn't right, he made a big mistake when he threatened to tell my father about. I still don't know what happened to him, all I know is that it allowed The Bear into my life.
At first like all others who've been in his presence, I was afraid, he scared me. Gradually I started to see the man behind the reputation, he was kind and he listened to me and my concerns. He is my teacher and one person I could tell my secrets to, I trusted even above my own mother. I love him, he makes my heart pound in my chest, a blush heats my skin in his presence I can barely concentrate around him. My mother could never know the feelings I had for him she would see it as a betrayal.
"Ladies please get ready for the party, I'll meet you there."
My ladies seemed to run from the room to get away from The Bear. I didn't want to be anywhere else. He looked so uncomfortable in his formal wear, I requested that he looked the part for tonight.
"I must say that you look most handsome this night My Bear."
He looked even more uncomfortable with my compliment, he is a man not used to such words spoken in his honor.
"My lady, it is an honor to be able to escort you tonight, but wouldn't it have been more appropriate to have a noble escort you instead."
"I couldn't the strength to sit through a noble's pandering and false admiration all night, it is my birthday and for tonight I get what I want."
This was my night to have what I want; The Bear is what I wanted. Tonight, is the night I will show him how much he means to me. Tonight, I didn't care about honor or my position, tonight I was just a regular woman who loved the man before her. So, I would, tell him finally how much I loved him, not as a father figure but as a man. A man I wanted to give everything to no matter the consequences no matter what anyone had to say about it.
"My Bear, I must confess something that has been weighing on my mind for some time now."
"What is it my lady?"
"Do you love me, My Bear."
"I have a great respect and admiration for you my lady." He seemed confused by what I'm asking of him.
"When my father comes back I will abdicate my place in the line of succession, I want my life to be my own, he has yet to find me a husband not that I want him too. I have found who I want to be with and he is you, I love you."
I had finally confessed my feelings to My Bear, but he didn't look happy to hear the words that took me years to grow the courage to say.
"My lady I can't return your affections, you one day be a great Queen to any land that is luckily enough to have you, but I am not worthy of your affections or attention."
"At least we agree on something Bear." Came a voice seemly out of nowhere.
Queen Integra had a habit of being in the right place at the right time at the expense of others. She looked neither amused or very happy about the topic of discussion, dressed completely in black silk, she looked as if she was going to someone's funeral. Since her brother suggested she put The Bear in her employ she had a great distaste for this man. She never felt that she could truly trust his motives or intentions.
Around Seras second year around The Bear, she started this doe-eyed admiration of him. At first, she thought it was just an innocent crush by a naïve young girl, but then she saw how she truly looked at him. It was if the fate of her whole world rested on every breath he took, every movement he made. It was something she could not allow to continue, Seras was her future, she was worth more than some pet bear.
"I want to you to leave the princesses chambers at once, the only reason that you still have your head, is that you haven’t completely lost your mind."
"But moth-," before Seras could finish the Queen's eyes flash fury as she stared down the princess. Whatever objection Seras had died upon her lips.
As the Bear went to leave before the Queen changed her mind she had one last thing to say to him.
"Oh and Bear, if you ever cross the line with her I will see to it that not even your memory will be left, now run along I have much to discuss with my naive daughter."
I was left with my mother, although she gave birth to me there were moments in my life where I felt that I disappointed her greatly. She didn't move a muscle, she just stared down her nose at me. I had seen this look before, whenever I didn't bow correctly, whenever I said the wrong thing, whenever I didn't do what I supposed too.
"My little naive dove, you honestly thought that I don't know every misstep you take, every person you talk to and every action you take."
She started walking towards me most menacingly.
"If you honestly think I would let you lower yourself to the level of a mongrel dog, you are sadly mistaken my little dove."
Grabbing my face, she spoke these next words in a near whisper.
"You are mine in every sense of the word and you are destined for greater things then the life of a sell swords wife, you will be the future of nations and I will not have you disappoint me."
By now her grip was painful, my eyes filled with tears.
Before I could stop them tears streamed down my face.
"Do you understand Dove."
Nodding my head, "I understand mother, I will not disappoint you."
Smiling, "Good, fix your face, your guest is waiting, it is not good to keep them waiting."
With those parting words went the same way she came without even a whisper of silk.
****************************************************************************
A week’s rest at the Saville estate passed before she knew it. It seemed like in a blink of an eye and they were all packed and ready to go. Lord and Lady Saville and their household came to bids them a farewell. They previously showered her with wedding gifts such as rich silks, furniture and a portrait of her mother when she was younger.
"My lady it has been an absolute honor to host you this past week, we hope that we will be invited to the wedding festivities."
"Of course, Lord Saville you and Lady Saville have been the most gracious of hosts."
"My lady I have one last gift to give to you."
Gesturing Lady Saville motioned for a young girl with dark brown hair to come forward.
"This is Myra she is our blacksmiths daughter; I know you will find a use for her in the future."
Seras didn't quite know what to make of Lady Saville's "gift". How would a blacksmiths daughter be of use to her in the future?
"You are most kind Lady Saville, I will find a use for her in my household, thank you."
Now that farewells were given, they were all set to leave, for the duration of their journey Seras would spend in the carriage. At first, she protested, she wanted to ride some of the way into Hyoperia, but Lord Rowan had an issue with it.
"The new queen shouldn't be seen for the first time riding around like a commoner."
"After you wed, the King will formally introduce you to the public during your coronation, until then you should shut yourself away from the public until it is more appropriate for you to be seen."
"The people should see you as little as possible that is how a Queen behaves."
The way he said behave was so smug, she didn't have the patience to deal with him today.
"Do you have much experience acting like a Queen, Lord Rowan."
For a minute, it looked like he was going to answer her question honesty. He tried to sputter out a response, but she cut him off before he could.
"My lord I will to ride in the carriage but don't smugly try to dictate how I will be as Queen, for my lord you serve me not the other way around."
"Of course, my lady forgives me for any offense."
"I think that will be all my lord."
Dismissing him soundly she went about getting herself prepare for the last part of their journey, soon she would no longer be as free as she is in this moment.
They have been traveling for two weeks and Seras had about enough of the carriage, every bump and rocking of the carriage made Seras feel nauseated. She didn’t know how much longer she could take idly sitting by while the country rolled by. Finally, they reached the the giant stone bridge that connects Hyoperia to Arcadia, instead of crossing it and adding several more weeks to their journey, the instead will take a ferry down the river out to sea and take a boat to Hyoperia’s largest and closest port to the imperial city.
The carriage can to an abrupt stop as a large crowd of travelers, huddled around on the bridge looking out at the river pointing.
“What is the meaning of this,” barked Lord Rowan.
But before he could get a answer to to his question I leaped from the carriage to investigate. Any excuse to get away from that stifling carriage.
“But but my lady”, Lord Rowan shouted from inside the carriage.
Promptly ignoring him I made my way to the stone bridge. Of I wasn’t alone as the Bear and my guards, Nan and a few of my Lady’s maids followed. We weaved through stopped carriages carrying nobles, travelers, wagons driven by merchants and wagons filled with everything from vegetables to horse manure.
As the crowded people started to realize my presence they began to part with shocked expressions on their faces. It helped that some of my guards held up the crest of the royal house of Arcadia. Everyone started to hastily bow as if I would start breathing fire like I was some sort of mythical dragon. Making my way towards the railing of the bridge I finally glimpsed what had everyone in a frenzy.
Giant logs clogged up the river below and the ferry was currently sinking into the river below. I gasped what happened here? Turning to the closest bowed head I gave them permission to go stand and speak. A merchant by the looks of his dress stood before, dressed better in than a commoner but not as nice as a noble.
“Your majesty blesses me by even speaking to me a simple leather merchant.”
“Thank you kind sir but what happened here.”
“Of course your majesty, it seems bandits have blocked the ferry and if that wasn’t enough they sunk the ferry.”
Lowering his voice and slightly leaning closer he whispered “ and I here last night Asire was set ablaze and even now there still trying to put the fire out.’
Be I could even blink the Bear had the man’s arm twisted behind his back.
“Touch my lady and next your going in the river with these logs.” Gritted out the Bear.
“Unhand him this instant and take ten steps back,” I bit out.
Apologizing over and over again, giving three gold coins in apology I stalked back to the carriage.
Before entering the carriage again I spun around to the Bear.
“I don’t what you’re current malfunction is but do that again and you can walk back to Arcadia.”
Not giving any time to respond I entered the carriage slamming the door shut behind me.
***************************************************************
Asire was the biggest port and closest to the imperial capital because of the ferry and now the port we had to drastically change our travel plans. Settling at a inn near the stone bridge we were going to leave at the first thing in the morning to make up as much time we were going to lose by traveling by carriage. A message hawk was sent to the capital informing them of our delay.
Days turned into weeks of travel, when this journey was over I never wished to travel by carriage again. The Bear kept his distance from me throughout our journey, only interacting with me when necessary. Fine if he didn’t want to speak with I didn’t want to speak with him either. After weeks traveling we finally almost reached the imperial capital of: Hyoperia and Seras gave a sigh of relief for this long journey would soon be at an end. One more week and they would reach the Argentum or the Silver City as some called it for its glittering structures and smooth marble. Rolling green hills and deep valleys of Arcadia would soon give away to dense forest of Hyoperia, more villages and towns were being passed on the way.
Seras had never seen trees so tall. Many believed that giants lived on the top of these big trees and when the wind howled and the skies rained it was the giants laughing tears of joy. Through the trees she could see silver stags running through the forest, these were the famous stags of Hyoperia.
Beautiful colored birds sang songs to each other while woodland creatures raced through the forest. The lands are lush and beautiful, light rain from this morning made the forest dewy. Soon forest gave way to towns and villages, people came out of their homes to stare in wonder as their procession made its way through the land. Smaller towns started growing in bigger cities, in two days’ time they would reach the capital Argentum, but before that King Borin has sent a delegation to escort them into Argentum. After days of seeing the lands of Hyoperia, they reached the outskirts of Argentum.
Big blue and silver tents filled a clearance in the woods on the way to the capital. Here Lord Rutherfort would meet them then escort Seras and key members of her household to the capital to meet the king. Many noble ladies and Lords came to look upon the woman who would in a short time become their Queen. In a month's time her wedding and coronation would take place, in that time she would also better learn about the country that she would be the Queen of.
Lord Rutherfort was a lean man in his fifties with silver hair and hawk like eyes. Seras could feel the disapproval coming off him, Lord Rowan told her that he didn't approve of the match between her and King Borin. His son was almost identical in stature, though years had not weathered his face and body with time. They stood at the opening of the biggest tent in the field, guards bearing the royal crest of Hyoperia stood ever watchful. Stepping from the carriage escorted by Lord Rowan we made our introductions.
"Lord Rutherfort allow me to introduce her royal highness Princess Seras Integra Deion of Arcadia."
With a deep curtsy, Seras bowed to both Lord Rutherfort, she could tell he wasn't impressed not one bit, but she didn't care he was not who she needed to impress. He seemed to barely tolerate their presence, he had a reputation for being cold and unapproachable.
"Your majesty, tales of your beauty don't do justice to the real thing you must be the pride of your father, who surely was pained to part from you." He said most sickly sweet, backhanded insults were what she was used to so he would have to do better than that to make me upset.
“It’s a shame that punctuality isn’t a noticeable trait in princesses these days.”
"My lord it is a pleasure to meet you, I look forward to you serving me at court, I know that you will be a most trusted advisor." If she had to put him in his place at every turn she would, he didn't have to like nor respect her but, he would serve her as his Queen whether he liked it or not.
"Lord Rowan what an honor is to meet a man of your distinction, I have heard great things of you." Promptly it seemed that Lord Rutherfort had forgotten all about her.
That gave Seras time to look around the camp at all the lords and ladies in attendance. They were all demurely whispering behind gloved hands and silk handkerchiefs. This type of behavior Seras was used to, so she paid it no mind. To her left she caught The Bear's eye for the first time since the fight in her chambers. Since then she barely paid him any notice instead she busied herself with preparing for the journey ahead of her.
My ladies seemed to run from the room to get away from The Bear. I didn't want to be anywhere else. He looked so uncomfortable in his formal wear, I requested that he looked the part for tonight.
"I must say that you look most handsome this night My Bear."

Nodding my head, "I understand mother, I will not disappoint you."
Smiling, "Good, fix your face, your guest is waiting, it is not good to keep them waiting."
With those parting words went the same way she came without even a whisper of silk.

A week’s rest at the Saville estate passed before she knew it. It seemed like in a blink of an eye and they were all packed and ready to go. Lord and Lady Saville and their household came to bids them a farewell.

Asire was the biggest port and closest to the imperial capital because of the ferry and now the port we had to drastically change our travel plans. Settling at a inn near the stone bridge we were going to leave at the first thing in the morning to make up as much time we were going to lose by traveling by carriage.

Chapter 7
Seras was unprepared for this; she was expecting time to prepare for her wedding. Time is what she wouldn't have. Lord Rowan himself did not know what to make of this change, he is a man that likes to be well prepared for any and everything the Kings proclamation has him flustered unlike anything Seras had seen before.
Lord Rutherfort on the other hand couldn't leave fast enough, he made his excuses to the King and the rest their party. He had to prepare for the coronation and wedding, his son followed close behind him like a hawkish shadow. The last thing Lord Rutherfort did as he left was sneer at Seras as if this was her fault the King decided the wedding was to take place now. Lord Rutherfort is a powerful man in this country but he could not go against the wishes of his King.
With a kiss to her hand and a deep bow the King left with his men. Parting with words how when they next see one another it would be as husband and wife, King and Queen. The King left her with these sentiments to prepare herself with what’s to come.
With haste Lord Rowan ushered her back into the carriage so that she would make it into the Silver City as soon as possible. She barely got to see the city or its people before they enter the castle and Seras was whist away to prepare. Her temporary chambers were a flurry of activity as she was bathed, hair was brushed and fashioned away from her face with ornate pearl pins. Her ladies hurriedly dug through her chests to find her wedding dress and the jewels she would wear.
It took one hundred seamstress’s one hundred days to complete the dress. They did last minute alterations throughout their delay. The dress was made long before she knew she was to be married. As part of her mother's last request, a wedding gown to be made for her that would rival any bride in Arcadia. Ivory lace and satin made up the bodice of the dress. A fifty-foot train of silk trailed behind the dress that would require six lady’s maids to carry behind her. Silver embellishments and a bright blue sash of fine silk draped across one shoulder. Silver and blue was the primary colors of Hyoperia.
Seras’s whole household plus her guards and supporters would be there to represent Arcadia on her behalf. Lord Rowan would give her away on behalf of her father. Seras was broken from her thoughts by a steward that left a gift from the King. In a black gilded box, laid in velvet was the lapis lazuli and silver crown of Hyoperia. The crown was nestled next to a matching choker, ring and diamond and sapphire necklace.
Lord Rowan spoke often in her lessons about the ancestral crown that all Queens of Hyoperia would wear on the day of their coronation. A large single diamond hung in the center of the crown with smaller jewels making up the rest. This meant one thing and one thing only, not only was she to wed the king this day but she would be crowned his queen as well. Usually the coronation would be weeks if not months after the wedding.
If it wasn't for her ladies continued fussing over her hair and dress she would have bowled over by this. Everything was happening so fast Seras felt as if she couldn't breathe, her heart felt like it jumped to her throat. As if he could sense her distress The Bear was at her side ushering her ladies out and finding her a seat to get her bearings.
Dressed for her wedding in a dark grey doublet with matching trousers and dark grey boots he was as dressed up as he was going to get. His hair and beard were just as unkempt as always, this face was a comfort to her whenever she was upset.
"Breathe my lady, you are stronger than this you will always be stronger than this," he whispered in her ear.
The Bear would always say this to her when throughout the years whenever she felt that she couldn't make it. Whenever Seras felt like giving up he would say these words to her you are stronger then this you will always be stronger than this. Taking a deep breath, she can gather herself and her heart felt regular again but she still felt a dull ache in her chest.
"Like all things my lady you will get through this, I have faith that you are as strong as ever, don't doubt yourself now."
"How did we get here my Bear, sometimes I wish that we were back in the Black Marshes where we were truly free. Father always thought it was a punishment to send us away to that bleak and sad place, but what he didn't know was that no matter where he sent us long as we were together then we were happy.
Suddenly her eyes filled with tears though they did not fall she was overcome with emotion non-the less. For first time in a long time she was wanted. As soon as King Borin laid eyes on her he wanted her as his wife and his Queen. She never truly felt wanted by anyone life people around her, treated her as if she didn't matter, as if her existence was burden.
King Borin looked at her with kindness and respect like no one before. For most of her life, save for her mother and Bear she was alone. Even surrounded by Lords, Ladies, maids, guards and the people of her kingdom, she never felt like she belongs among them. Years of her forced solitude has made Seras feel alone and abandoned at times.
The time for those feelings would soon be at an end, she was no longer the unwanted burden. Seras would soon be the Queen of Hyoperia and the mother to its future. Her mother never raised her to let emotion overcome her like this, after all she is her mother's daughter. Queen Integra De Lion would be highly disappointed in her only daughter showing anything but strength.
She was taken out of her thoughts by the rough pad of the Bear's thumb as it swept across her inner wrist. This was the first time the Bear ever touched so gently, usually he placed his hands on her to correct my stance, fix the sword in her hand or to teach her the proper technique with sword and shield. All anger and frustration Seras felt towards the Bear was forgotten, she needed the Bear now more than ever before.
"I've never seen you so gentle, more like a baby cub then a bear."
With a sly grin the Bear continued massaging her wrist, he seemed to not realize that her wrist was still in his hands. Hands that had been roughed by time massaged patterns into her flesh, Seras never realized how much larger his hand was compared to hers. His wild red hair was the same unruliness that that always comforted Seras.
"I do not understand the sudden affection my Bear, there was a time that is all I desired from you but now it just leaves me confused."
At first, he seemed to be dedicated to tracing patterns on her wrist, he wouldn't look at her it was if he was trying to put his thoughts together.
"My lady, the hours grow nearer to your marriage and coronation, I have been disloyal in my actions towards you."
Before she could interrupt he continued what he had to say.
"My feelings for are not appropriate, I am your servant, you are way above my station, your mother trusted me to protect you and make you strong. For one day you would come to rely on that strength, I am sorry that I have failed you, I am not worthy of your grace and loyalty."
"Why are you not worthy my Bear." She didn't understand why he was so contrite.
With the hand the wasn't gently stroking her wrist, he reached under his doublet to a silver chain with a key on the end.
"My lady I must confess-
Suddenly Lord Rowan came into the room, behind him her ladies, Nan her principal lady in waiting looked generally put off by Lord Rowan once again bursting into Seras chambers without being invited to do so.
"My lady some noble ladies and gentleman are requesting an audience with you to bestow some kind words and gifts for you."
Seeing her and the Bear in such proximity of each other stopped Lord Rowan in his tracks, the look on his face would be comical if circumstances were different. Everything was changing around her and she didn't have the time or energy to explain herself to Lord Rowan. The Bear raised to stand to right of her like an ever-watchful guard.
"My Lord I am ready to receive my guests; The Bear was just helping me calm my nerves. Like always he is stable presence in my life."
"Of course, my lady."
He didn't seem convinced but she no longer could focus on his suspensions, her chambers doors where being opened by the royal guards and a long line of nobility was waiting to fawn over. Whether this admiration was real or fake only time would tell.
Countless faces were introduced to her, gifts of fine fabrics, beddings, jewels and other lovely gifts were given to her by those who wished to gain favor with the King’s new bride. Lords praised her beauty and ladies requested to have tea with her, each person had their own agenda as they approached her. After what felt like hours, Seras was once again left alone but this time she was ready, a calmness has fallen over her. She could do this; she could be a wife to a husband, a Queen to a King.
Through the doors she could hear the Queens wedding march, with her head raised high and her back straight she was ready for her future.
**********************************************************************************
Every Queen of Hyoperia from the first light to the last walked through the underground caverns to the first church of Hyoperia guided by a torch. It is said that the first Queen of Hyoperia was helped by the goddess Alectrona through the darkness to the light. Through the darkness she was led to King Harold the Kind the builder of the Silver City. Now all Queens on their wedding followed that same path towards their King. All ladies and guards left Seras, for she would have to make this journey alone.
The wind roared through the caverns, threatening to extinguish Seras’s only source of light. The flickering torch cast shadows across the walls of the cool cavern. Seras swore she heard footsteps behind her and she had a eerie feeling that she was being followed. Seras didn’t know if the darkness was playing tricks on her or the nearly claustrophobic feeling of the walls getting tighter around her. Dropping her torch a strong wind extinguished it at her feet. Controlling her breathing like the Bear taught her she seemed to vanish. Whoever was following her wasn’t so skilled because every few seconds she heard his breath.
Silently or so he thought, a cloaked in black figure crept past her going into a passageway in the outside direction. When Seras was sure he was far enough away, she started to make her way down a different path. Thankfully she was able to control a medium sized flame in the center of her palm, shining light in the darkness.
After endless turns and shifts in the corridors she finally made it to the archway of the gods, here she will be married in front of all the nobility. Quickly she put out her flame before anyone could see her.
From the archway, she could see clearly into the first temple ever built in Hyoperia. Built into a cave the walls were at least one hundred feet high, the walls the color of Greystone had been smoothed by time and the hands of the royal masons. Lights from the torches and candles reflected across the smooth surface of the walls and ceilings.
Her ladies stood waiting to help straighten out her train, walking through near dark caverns had twisted in behind her. She would pass through the arch a maiden and come back through a Queen. On raised stone steps and ledges, the nobility looked on as she walked to the dais that held King Borin and the High Priestess. The train slid behind her as if they were her wings flanked by her ladies. They felt like her guardian angels.
The priestess of Hyoperia were very different from Arcadia, unlike Arcadian priest. All of the spiritual leaders in Hyoperia are woman with shaved heads. Intricate patterns were painted on their skin, Lord Rowan told Seras these patterns where used to give blessings and to help them channel the voices of the gods.
Prince Borin look radiant in his silver armor, Lord Rowan’s many lessons on Hyoperia came to Seras mind in that instance. He taught her that all Kings are married in their armor. All ceremonies were occasions for Kings to look their best in armor. Borin looked his best in his chainmail, his hair fell in soft waves against his armor. His blue eyes danced with mirth, he looked more than pleased to have her has his bride. As she got closer they darken with an emotion she had never seen before.
Upon reaching the dais, King Borin assisted her up the sets, hand in hand they kneeled in front of the Priestess. A low table sat before them hosting two silver chalices with the crest of Cousland family, two silver stags locking horns. Next to the chalices where the ancestral crowns of the Hyoperia, the Kings crown with its huge sapphires stones that glittered like the stars.
King Borin leaned in to whisper, "You look absolutely magnificent, my lady."
Although he couldn't see her skin flushed with heat, she was unaccustomed to compliments such as this, it was pleasantly refreshing.
"My Lords and ladies before us are the future of Hyoperia, our great King Borin this day weds Princess Seras of Arcadia." The priestess spoke in a commanding voice. Picking up the King’s crown from where it was nestled on a bed of velvet.
Placing the crown on the King's head, "My many blessing reigns on their union."
Picking up the Queen's crown she placed it on Seras head, "May many sons come from your womb to bring forth our future."
"Today wed you to our King Borin first of his line, and now until you feast at the gods table I crown Seras of Hyoperia, long may you reign. Now drink from these blessed cups to your future and to the future of the kingdom."
Both Borin and Seras where handed the chalices where they both drank the bitter sweet wine that will bind them until they feast at the Gods table.
King Borin helped her up and before she could turn to the court, Borin laid a hand upon her shoulder to draw her attention to him. Slowly that hand slide down her arm to grasp her hand, in its wake goosebumps peppered her flesh. Here stood her future, husband and King she would serve him in all things. So, in her thoughts she didn't even realize he was drawing ever near, his eyes flashed with a heat she had never experienced before. His lips descended to hers, skin blazed with the heat of his passion she could barely think straight.
Suddenly many voices shouted. "Long live the King, Long Live the Queen."
***********************************************************************
From the temple, they made our way to the great hall where a feast was being thrown in their honor. Tables filled with game caught by the wedding part filled the hall the aroma the food reminded her that she hadn't eaten since breakfast early this morning. Great cakes and pastries with sweet smelling frostings and sugars. Tarts, pies intricate sugar sculptures in the shape of sliver stags and lions filled the tables.
Ale, beers and wines flowed freely from crystal decanters that servants generously served. They made sure that no guest was without drink and that no one wanted anything.
"Make way for most beloved and gracious majesties, King Borin and Queen Seras," Cried out the royal herald.
Lords and Ladies dressed in all types of finery jockeyed for the King and her attention, the King introduced her to all the members of his council, to his generals and most valued friends at court. Seras could barely keep up with this duke, that earl or was that a countess or marquess. Ladies and lords alike praised her beauty and requested teas and brunches with her. How quickly they tried to gain favor with the new Queen.
Her household mingled with the royal court for now that would also be considered part of their ranks. Her ladies charmed nobles and fought off advances of would be suitors, Lord Rowan was currently talking to General of Odin, head of the Kings royal forces. They seemed to be having a lively discussion about what would seem like a horse of some kind.
Her eyes scanned the room for The Bear, she hadn’t seen him since he came to speak in her rooms. At first, she couldn’t make him out in the crowd, until she spied him in the corner once again talking more franticly with Claire. One way or another Seras had to get to the cause of the rift between her maid and her most trusted friend. Breaking Seras from her thoughts the King whispered in her ear.
“My lady will you make me the happiest man in the room by dancing with me.”
With a smile and a nod, she gave the King permission to lead her in a waltz. Their guest made space in the center of the room so they could watch them in their first dance. It was almost if they were judging the first dance as an indication of their marriage.
With one hand around her waist and the other grasped firmly in his, the King led her back and forth around the room. She loved to dance, trained in all things pertaining to court she was well versed in many dances and enjoyed them all. The King is a very capable dancer in his own right, he firmly guided her through every twist and turn of the waltz.
Bending to whisper to her, “You are very graceful my lady, today I am very fortunate to have a wife with such talents, Lord Rowan has spoken very highly about your attributes.”
Looking him squarely in the eyes, “I hope my Lord Rowan hasn’t been telling tall tales for how ever will I be able to live up to such promises.”
Chuckling the king responded, “my lady you have more than exceeded expectations and soon you will fulfill all my desires.”
Back was the smoldering heat in his eyes, her throat was instantly dry and words escaped her.
“Do not fret my lady for I will teach all the ways man and women dance more intimately.”
Her cheeks burn with a heat she had previously felt when he kissed her. Seras had nearly forgotten about the wedding night when some members of the court would bear witness to their consummation. Arcadian weddings did not include bedding ceremonies; pray to the gods that she would be able to get through without being truly mortified.
The final notes of the song ended our dance, the court applauded their skill, until suddenly a booming voice interrupted.
“My brother I see that the gods still favor you with the best life has to offer, a beautiful bride, a throne and many riches,” came from a tall man behind us.
The voice belonged to Prince Fendrel, the King's younger brother and next in line to the throne until she produced an heir. Where Borin was fair haired and broad shouldered, Fendrel was dark haired and slender. Instead of piercing blue eyes, pale grey translucent eyes stared back at her, she did not like the way he gazed upon her. It was if he was imaging her without clothes on, his stare made her feel unclean.
“What a pretty Queen you have now, allow me to introduce myself, Prince Fendrel Cousland my lady.”
“My Lord you are so kind, as an only child I never had siblings I look forward to having a brother.”
Grasping her hand, he placed a kiss upon it before whispering in her ear.
“I don’t know how it goes in your country lady but the things I want to do to you are far beyond brotherly.”
Trying not to cause a scene Seras not so gently removed her hand from his. She would have to watch out for Fendrel for he is like a viper in hiding. Giving him the curtsy, he did not deserve she returned to Borin’s side, he looked non-to please with his brother.
“Allow me to apologize for any offense that my brother has made towards you my lady, even though we were born from the same womb he inherited no manners.” Borin glared at his brother while Fendrel just smirked darkly at him.
“My King, no offense was taken, your brother is harmless,” Seras said with a smile.
Seras was not stupid Fendrel was many things, brutish, uncouth and ill-mannered but he is in no ways harmless. She would make sure that her and Fendrel never are in the same room alone, her mother warned her about men like him. Men that thought because they are men that they can take what they want without resistance.
Guiding her away from his brother, Borin escorted her to large polished oak table slightly raised from the floor. Here they will have their wedding feast and their guest will present them with gifts and tokens to bless their marriage and future children.
Hours of feasting and drinking was starting to have its effect on Seras, she became a lot calmer and truly started to enjoy the wedding festivities. All her household save for the Bear and Claire have paid their respects to her and the King. She hadn’t seen either one of them for hours since their fight earlier. She started to get tired if wondering where they keep going off to, tomorrow she would summon them to her chambers and demand what is going on. She wouldn’t let them ruin her good mood, it is her wedding day and she fully attended to enjoy it.
After some time of feasting and dancing, Borin stood to announce that they would be retiring for the evening.
“My lords and ladies me and my Queen will be retiring to our chambers now, but I think that we will forgo the bedding alas I don’t want to share any part the Queen with any of you.”
Laughter and faint applause rang throughout the room they exited the hall with a chorus of “majesties”. Fendrel gave them a most dark look as they made to leave the room, throughout the celebration he sulked in the corner drinking and making crass comments to her ladies. They had the good sense to both ignore them and stay clear of him for most of the night.
Taking her hand Borin escort her from the great hall to the darkened hallways of the palace. Torches guided them to his bedchamber, this was it she would no longer be the virgin princess she once was. Instead in her place she would be grown woman capable of bearing children, her ladies had already left to prepare the chamber for them.
Two formidable guards stood at the entrance each gripped heavy looking battle axes. One false move and it looked like they would strike your head from your body, a slight chill ran through her at the thought. Taking note of her sudden nerves, Borin gently stroked the back of her hand with the pad of his thumb. The ruff skin of his thumb gave her more than enough comfort.
Pulling the doors open the guards revealed an outer sitting room that held tables and couches to entertain guests or hold private suppers. Moving past the out room they came upon the bedchamber, bigger than the previous room it held a big bed placed on a raised platform. Curtains were tied to each of the bed posts and could be unraveled to enclose the bed if wanted. The fire place took up a considerable amount of space to the right of the bed. A large fire made the room warm and comfortable, to left led to two solid wood doors.
Candles where lit throughout the bedchamber painting the room in a soft amber glow that made her feel warm and comfortable.
Several of her ladies waited in the bedchamber to help remove her dress and take down her hair. Nan smiled warmly, taking great care removing Seras wedding dress. Briefly Borin went through one of the wooden doors to let her undress in private, she appreciated the thought immensely. She just needed these final private moments to collect herself and steel her nerves.
Her ladies made quick work of getting her out of the dress, the buttons, ties and ribbons seemed to not slow them down in the least. Suddenly she was down to her undergarments or to her it seemed like it took a lot quicker for it come off then to put it on. Lastly a simple white dressing gown was put on her before her ladies bowed and left. Nan lingered behind whispering words of encouragement and kissing her hands before bowing deeply and leaving.
She wasn’t left alone long before Borin reentered the bedchamber, only clad in loose linen breeches, this was the most she had ever seen of a man. Light fair blond chest hair covered his chest a trail of that hair led down into his breeches.
“You may look as much as your heart desires my lady, but there are other things I wish to do to you this night, wife.”
Walking behind her, he slid her hair from shoulder so he could bury his face in her neck, the hairs of his beard tickled her flesh making her knees weak.
“I much pleased by you wife, now let me gaze upon you fully.”
Slowly he started to dragged her dressing gown from around her hips, as the fabric whispered across flesh delighting her at the sensations it made her feel. Finally, the gown was gone and she stood bare before the king. It seemed like a lifetime before he moved but it wasn’t to caress or turn her to him, the king left his chambers slamming the door in his wake.
Aftermath by IPreferPatches
It has been four months since Borin left her wedding chambers, that very night he called his council together to have their marriage annulled. Her ladies rushed in at a frenzy after the King left, they never left her side that night. Fiercely loyal, they wanted to make sure that she was okay. From then on whenever they were in the presence of the King or his council members, they would sneer at them. Many times, she tried to get them to stop but they could not be convinced otherwise, they saw his treatment of their lady to be unforgivable and he no longer deserved their respect.
Lord Rowan on the other hand was furious. The morning after, he came to her chambers to convey his displeasure and disappointment. Seras had just gotten dressed for the day when he came bursting in interrupting her and her ladies. Nan had just finished dressing The Queen in a dark blue satin day dress and was now working on an elaborate updo.
“My lady I must speak to at once.”
Without even turning from her dressing mirror, “What exactly is so important my lord that would yet again burst into my chambers unannounced.”
Looking contrite, he gave her respect she deserved.
“Forgive me your majesty, I just wanted to know what happened last night, the King looked most passionate with you just yester-” Interrupting Lord Rowan, Seras had to say her peace before Lord Rowan could start.
“My lord the King didn’t seem to be happy with me once my clothes were removed, so if you want any farther thoughts on the matter you’ll have to ask the King for I can’t presume to know what a King is thinking.”
“There must have been some indication of his change in attitude perhaps you did or said something to upset the King, as a wife and Queen you must bend to the will of the King to make sure he’s pleased in all things no matter what.”
Lord Rowan had crossed a line and the sad part is that he didn’t even see where he made the misstep. He continued to blame Seras for the King’s behavior. The blame solely landed at her feet, it had to have been something she did wrong a failure on her part. Seras would no longer be blamed for the whims of men, she would no longer be degraded for their foolish pride. Stilling Nan’s hands from her hair, Seras turned her full attention towards Lord Rowan.
Raising, she commanded his attention, “Lord Rowan you are speaking to someone above your station, not a chamber wench that you bully around. Until I am told otherwise, I am still the Queen of Hyoperia so watch your words more carefully my Lord, I will not repeat myself again.”
Sensing that he had overstep himself he went to make his amends. But she would not let him have the last word.
“I would stop you before you start Lord Rowan, I think your talents would serve me with preparing my household with what’s to come before I find someone else who will,” she spat.
Finally understanding her tone, he bowed and exited her chambers.
Now it’s been more than four months since and Seras has not been idle. She had her ladies keep their ears the ground to find out what they could see about her annulment. Many Lords and Ladies didn’t realize all the eyes and ears that constantly surrounded them. From maids to squires, guards and cooks they all knew the inner workings of the nobility's households. Seras maids made sure they knew these servants to gain as much information for their Queen. The King and his counselors worked day and night to find a solution to end their marriage. One great impediment to the annulment is Seras father, he refused to take her back, he considered once she stepped foot off Arcadian soil that she was no longer his problem.
Since he refused to take her back the King must return my dowry to her, one of the things that made her so appealing in the first place. Chests filled with gold, silver and precious jewels where brought with her from Arcadia. Her mother made sure in her wedding promise that the dowry of any future daughter would be something to marvel at. The problem with just having his ministers dissolve their marriage was that some of her dowry was already promised to build new ships and battlements for Hyoperia, nearly half her dowry as spent before she even stepped foot in Hyoperia. For their marriage to be dissolved the King would have to pay back all Seras dowry, money he did not have. One great stronghold in the King army was finally able to updated and rearmed. The western front of the King’s territories has just finally been stabilized from bandits. The King would have to completely empty the royal coffers to repay the dowry. So now Seras was the virgin Queen of a land she is a stranger to with a husband that wanted to be rid of her.
To make matters worse Lord Rutherfort made it known to anyone who would listen about how inadequate she is as a bride and a woman. Him and his friends at court would give her thinly veiled insults and jabs whenever in the Queen’s presence. Nothing overtly insolent was said directly to Seras but she wasn’t stupid. She would never respond to such petty insults, instead she tried not to spend much time in the castle if she could.
Her days would often be spent in the Silver City, walking the markets, visiting their shrines and temples and interacting with the people. It seems that the people of Hyoperia weren’t privy to what was going on with the nobility. They never were given such access to royalty before unless it impacted their daily lives it wasn’t much a concern for the people. Bear and the rest of her guards weren’t so keen on the idea of her being so out in the open often. Seras couldn’t think of a better way to spend her time, in Arcadia she was rarely allowed to go out in public. Now being the Queen, she has the freedom never that wasn’t had before, the freedom to do as she pleased.
It pleased the new Queen to be among her people, something the citizens of Hyoperia weren't accustomed too. The people either bowed while others look on their procession in wonderment. The people didn’t judge her or try to make her feel inferior they just wanted her attention and so she gladly gave it to them. It was a much better use of her time then wondering when the King would get rid of her. The people were starting to love her more and more and the feelings are mutual. Learning the customs and traditions of her people something that help occupy her time. Lord Rutherfort spent his time trying to unnerve her every chance he got. If he wasn’t having the nobles whispering behind her back, he was having high ranking ladies shunning her household. Unfortunately for the new Queen, Lord Rutherfort was not the only one giving the Queen problems.
Prince Fendrel spent every chance he got to make lewd comments in her presence, often he would try to corner the Queen alone. Knowing this Seras made sure she was always with a guard, Bear or her ladies and much to his frustration he couldn’t get her alone. He would try to get his supporters to distract her guards or ladies to get to her. On one particular occasion, he nearly caused The Bear to cut him down where he stood. One mid-morning the Queen was sitting in the court yard surrounded by her ladies relaxing when Fendrel interrupted them. Sitting amongst the many different type of flowers the royal gardener had planted for the spring season. Seras choose to sit upon a stone bench under a massive oak tree that was plant nearly two centuries ago by Borin’s ancestor. The courtyard was one of the only places in the palace that Seras that could relax without the judging eyes of the King’s court. Fendrel constantly sought to end any peace that Seras tried to find for herself, he seemed to always be wherever Seras seemed to be, and she couldn’t voice her concerns with the King or anyone in his court with the present state of her marriage.
Leering at her from the entrance of the court yard, “Your majesty you are looking as buxom as ever, my brother is a fool not to have taken you repeatedly the way I would have and maybe I still will,” he said with a dirty grin on his face.
Seras and her ladies were utterly disgusted with him, he took it even further by pushing her ladies aside and slinging his arm across her shoulders as if they were longtime friends. She tried to slip out of his grip in order to put distance between them.
Whispering in her ear, “I would gladly unburden you from your virginity, all you have to do my lady is beg me, get down on your knees and show me who’s the real King.”
Slowly he was running hand up her thigh past her midsection towards her chest. Both Seras and her ladies where powerless to stop him. As Borin had no sons of his own, Fendrel is the next in line for the throne, save for the King he was the most important person in Hyoperia.
“You have one second to get your hands off me my lord before I make to regret ever getting out of bed today.” Unknown to Fendrel, Seras had a dagger hidden in the folds of her gown and was a ready to use it if the situation called for it.
Grasping her wrist, he pulled Seras closer to harshly whisper to her. “Bitch I can make it hurt so bad that you’ll be begging me to make it stop and I gladly make it worst, so I suggest you play nice or when I am on throne I will let my men have you when I’m done.”
“I suggest you listen to my lady, I don’t want to have to hear her repeat herself again,” Came a voice from the entry way.
Standing in the entryway, was The Bear and he wasn’t in anyway amused, his green eyes flashed with fire. Seras had never in her life seen him this angry. Not when her mother pushed her to the breaking point over and over, not when father would insult her openly. His chest heaved with barely restrained fury, his board sword was sheathed at his side. One of her ladies that was pushed aside by Fendrel must have went to get The Bear as soon as Fendrel put his hands on Seras.
Seras knew she had to defuse this as soon as possible, if The Bear drew his sword against the King’s brother that in its self was an act of treason punishable by death. Seras also knew that Fendrel would try to provoke the situation as much as he could. He would often sneer at Bear when he thought no one was looking, her ladies would tell her how he would tell his cohorts how given the chance he would have The Bears head as a trophy on his mantle.
Finally untangling herself from Fendrel’s hold, Seras stood and moved away from him, she needed to put as much distant between them as she could. Motioning toward Nan her chief lady in waiting to come over, whispering in Nan’s ear, Seras sent her to go find Lord Rowan and any other witnesses so that Fendrel wouldn’t get away with anything. Seras couldn’t trust Fendrel to not make trouble for everyone in his path. Quickly Nan left the courtyard for help, The Bear started to make his way towards his Queen but Fendrel interrupted his progression.
“Oh, look it’s the Queen’s pet dog, are you here to kiss the Queen’s ass and lick the shit off her boots dog.” Smirking he looked like the cat that ate the canary.
“Do you always hide behind your lady’s skirts like a mewling quim or is today a special occasion,” he sneered at The Bear.
He was trying to bait The Bear into confronting him, Seras hoped Nan was getting the others as quickly as she could before it got out of hand. At any given chance Fendrel was looking for an opportunity to cause the most trouble, Borin constantly ignored his arrogant younger brother in order to rule Hyoperia. Fendrel doesn’t take to kindly to being ignored by his King brother. To amuse himself he picked on any and every one he could get his hands on.
Raising Seras made to make space between Fendrel and herself before The Bear did something that would put himself in grave danger.
“Bear, I am ready to go back to my chambers, my ladies need to rest before supper so let’s go now”, Seras urged everyone in her household to follow her from the courtyard.
Hopefully drawing Bears attention to her instead of focusing on Fendrel they could avoid conflict. Moving towards Bear Seras went to take The Bears arm and leave before anything could happen. A loud gasp came behind her stopping her dead in my tracks. Behind Seras, Fendrel had one of her lady’s arms in his grasp. He was twisting her arm as hard as he could. Her face was distorted in pain, his eyes had this gleam in them, he was getting pleasure out of causing her pain.
He was gleeful in hurting her, a dark smirk stretched the corners of his mouth and his dark features looked almost sinister in his mirth. She wouldn’t be able to take much more before her arm would break, Seras had to act before that happened.
“Get your hands of her, I am still the Queen of Hyoperia you obey me and I’m telling you to get out of my sight this instance,” Seras was now shaking with rage at the thought of what he can do.
Fendrel didn’t like to be told what to do at all, his gripped only tightened and his smirk altogether disappeared. A dark twisted look replaced his smirk, most menacingly he threatened the Queen. He never had a woman speak to him in this manner before, usually he was the on giving orders to those he deemed beneath him. To have this foreign Queen that even his own brother didn’t want. She thought she could command him Prince Fendrel of Hyoperia second in line to be King.
“Whore you don’t have the power to command me to do anything, you should be on your knees before me putting your mouth to better uses,” he sneered.
Releasing Seras lady, he pushed her to the ground, groaning in pain as the Queens other ladies went to help her to her feet and away from Fendrel. Coming towards Seras he raised his hand to strike her but before his hand could come down another hand caught his. Green eye flashed fire, Fendrel made a grave mistake, The Bears grip was ironclad. So, used to picking on those weaker then him Fendrel never once faced someone he couldn’t bully into submission.
“How dare you touch me dog, I am a prince and future ruler of Hyoperia I will have you castrated like the mangy dog you are,” he yelled.
“You will do no such thing little brother.”
None of them noticed the group that just entered the courtyard, King Borin and his guards surrounded Seras household. His personal knights clad in their armor lent an air of authority to the King, because no matter what their title was, they are all the Kings subjects.
Behind him stood some of the court, Lord Rowan and Lord Rutherfort were among them. Lord Rowan looked like he was going to pass out at any moment, Rutherfort on the other hand looked slightly pleased at the turn of events. He has no great love for Seras but he might hate Fendrel even more, so to see them both at each other throats made him happy.
This was the first time Seras had seen Borin in months, a few weeks after their wedding he came to her chambers to announce in person that he wished to dissolve their marriage and that from now on his counselors would be in contact with Lord Rowan to discuss further details. Before he could leave Seras chambers, she had to know why he wanted to be rid of her. She had to know what she was lacking in his eyes.
“My lord if I may have a moment of your time I must ask a question of you.”
Tentatively he turned towards her. “You may ask me this one question.” he said curtly.
“What have I done that has made you so feel so slighted, what have I done to make you so angry with me?”
Turning his eyes where hard blue pools of anger, it seemed that he couldn’t contain his emotions.
“You lied to me, Lord Rowan lied to me, he promised that I was getting a flawless bride but that was a lie,” he spat.
“My lord I don’t know what you speak of.” Seras was quite confused in what he was talking about and her face conveyed her emotions. What did Lord Rowan promise him and how did she lie to him, Seras needed to find the truth behind these accusations.
“Your father promised me that you were perfect but you’re not,” he sneered.
Seras couldn’t help but laugh, he looked like a pouting child. She finally figured out what he was so upset about, this did not go over well with him. He made to leave but before he could she had something to say to him.
“I am not perfect my lord, far from it but who among is, I was told before our marriage about your vanity when it comes to pretty things but I did not know is this bad. In my childhood, I had to fight for the person I am today. I have been told how your childhood was filled with love and laughter. I am envious of you in that regard but my childhood was filled with discipline and punishment when I didn’t fall in line.”
“My body bares the lessons I learned, lessons my father was all too happy to teach so if this makes me unworthy as your Queen so be it, but I will not be ridiculed and reduced by you or any other people in your court any longer.”
With nothing to say Borin left the same way he came quietly and without a second thought. Seras couldn’t help thinking back on the times father would discipline her for any or everything he thought she was doing wrong. The way she walked, the way she talked, how she dressed. Sometimes the very look of her face just ruined her father’s mood. The punishments were made so much worse and more frequent after the The Queen was gone, inflicting pain on Seras was the only way for him to continue to punish her.
Scars criss crossed her back from her shoulder blades to the small of her back, father went to great pains to make sure that no one could see these scars. He didn’t want Seras “value” as a bride to be diminished, otherwise it would be harder to get rid of her quicker. The scars may have mentally faded but physically they still painted a picture of her youth. It had taken her years to overcome the feeling of being somehow tainted by these scars. For years, Seras felt that she would never be truly loved because of them. But her mother taught her, she didn’t need love to survive because it would only make you weak.
*********************************************************************************
“What trouble are you causing now little brother, haven’t had enough with creating mischief wherever you go, aren’t you too old for this brother,” said the King contemptuously. After the commotion he stirred in the courtyard today, Borin demanded his brother explain himself. Fendrel didn’t like to be talked down to one bit, with a sneer he replied, “I am not your child who you can scold brother, this little bitch isn’t worth the mud under my boot so why should I care what happens to her.”
Storming over to Fendrel, Borin grabbed him by his tunic nearly strangling him with it.
“You will not disrespect a lady in my presence, you forget yourself Fendrel, you are my subject first and my brother second, I should have you whipped in front of the entire court for your insolence,” yelled Borin in his brother’s face. Fendrel had on many occasions had tried the Kings patience, if he wasn’t gambling and fighting, he was insulting any member of the gentry that he could find.
Seras had never seen Borin so angry, even after their wedding night he wasn’t angry as much as it seemed he was annoyed by what was happening. His anger could not be mistaken for something else, Fendrel had crossed a line and his brother would not be placated. These last few months Fendrel had gotten away with snide remarks, innuendos on her behalf and nearly out right mocking his brother. Borin had enough on his hands with bandits sacking villages on his north borders, his patience with his brother is though.
“I think its way passed time for you to leave court, I’ve had enough of your utter disrespect and vulgarity", spat Borin. “Maybe some time away from court will help straighten out your attitude and you can come back to court with a better attitude.
Fendrel could barely contain his humiliation at being scolded by his older brother in front of prominent members of the court. Some were shocked that The King was disciplining his brother in front of the court while others seemed to be sneering at the prince being treated so poorly. Shoving his way passed members of the court and the King’s guards he made to take his leave but before he could completely make his leave the King had some parting words.
“Fendrel, if we ever have to have this conversation again you are not going to like the consequences.”
After Fendrel left, Seras finally released the breath she didn’t know she was holding; her main priority was making sure that her ladies where okay. Nell the lady that Fendrel had in his grasps was shaken, Seras had Nan and the rest of her ladies went to take Nell back to their chambers so she could rest. Bear escorted Seras back to her chambers personally. As soon as they were away from the eyes of the court, Bear let his emotions rein free.
“I want to kill him, he has no right to speak to touch you or be in your presence, I’ll rip his fucking heart out if he ever touches you again.” Pacing around her outer chamber angrily, Seras never seen Bear this upset before but the worlds he was speaking were dangerous. Fendrel is many things but he is still the Kings brother, to threaten a sovereign heir is punishable by death. Still, she could barely take her eyes off him from time to time Bear would show small glimpse of his feelings towards her before shutting them away. Sooner or later they would need to talk about these feeling and settle them but for now there were more pressing matters.
“Stop pacing my Bear, you will do nothing and say no more, Fendrel is not worth your life. Threatening him will only put you in danger and that I will not allow.”
Finally stopping his pacing came over to kneel in front of her, from around his neck he pulled off a silver chain with a key attached to the end. The key itself was simple in design, Seras just didn’t understand the reasoning behind him giving it to her. Sensing her confusion, Bear made to explain the significance of the key.
“My lady for all the years that I have the had the privilege of knowing you I have been entrusted with this key. Your mother left you a trunk and left me with this key to open it when you come of age, I do not know its contents all I know if that she thought that you would need it in time to come.”
This made no sense why wouldn’t mother just give her the key, why this sense of mystery around it, she didn’t understand why it was such a secret. Her mother wasn’t the forth coming with any emotions and used her secrets as armor. It didn’t make sense what could be so important that The Bear had to guard the key like it was a great treasure. Taking the key from his hand, Seras searched her chambers until she came upon the chest, pushed in the back of her dressing chamber. The chest seemed like a beacon to her, a beacon of her past, present and maybe even her future.
Borin was never meant to be King, that was constantly running through his mind. The crown was never destined for his head, Arryn was the first-born son in his family. Born early in his parents’ marriage he was supposed to be the future of Hyoperia, but the future was uncertain. Arryn was sick since the moment he was born; he often would spend nights in his nursery gasping for breath. The royal physicians nor the apothecary could never figure out what ailment he suffered from. The Queen was beside herself with helplessness, there was nothing that anybody could do about it, the prince was dying.
All their remedies failed, both the physicians and the apothecary failed to make the young Prince any better. Most of his childhood was spent in the royal nursery surrounded by nursemaids and servants. He wasn't strong enough to even go outside until he was nearly seven years old and by then he looked like a husk of what a child should be.
He was a pale boy who was slight in stature, but with a mind beyond his years. Queen Mother forbid him to encounter anyone his own age lease they get him sick. She saw all children no matter their lineage was a danger to the sickly Prince. All those years spent inside without a companion or friend made the Prince very lonely, but books and knowledge filled those lonely moments.
No subject was off limits to the prince and he soaked up information like a sponge. By ten he was well versed in the affairs of the kingdom and of those surrounding Hyoperia. His mind was set already to rule even though his body failed him time and again. Not long after his eleventh birthday he fell ill for the final time, after months of agony Prince Arryn went to feast with the gods. On that day Hyoperia lost the ruler that it deserved.
The King and Queen were inconsolable, their only child was dead, the future of their kingdom seemed bleak. The people mourned for the King that they would never have. For years’ misery was their child and they embraced it like no other until they received some unexpected news. The Queen was with child again and she was taking no chances with this child. For months, she shut herself in her chambers with her lady’s maids, and personal physicians. Her paranoia would not allow her to anything no matter how little it would affect the baby.
The only thing that consumed her thoughts was having a healthy baby, not even the King saw her in her shut-in months. The King was willing to endure this behavior from the Queen because he saw how devastated she was when Arryn died. He was helpless in stopping her pain, so whatever she wanted she received from him. The King stayed faithful and devoted to his Queen throughout the duration of the Queen’s confinement.
By the next year's first winter snow Prince Borin Alexander Cousland was born strong and healthy. The King and Queen rejoiced with parties and festivals thrown in the new Prince's honor. Throughout Hyoperia many nobles and commoners alike celebrated the Prince’s birth. Unlike the brother before him illness rarely graced his nursery and books, reading wasn't his passion. The Queen doted on the new Prince, always looking after his health, always making sure he never fell ill. The new Prince had the best of everything, whether it was the best tutors or master at arms. Anything less just wasn't good enough; the Queen believed her son deserved the best that life had to offer him. When Borin became old enough for bride, she had to be perfection in looks, health, civility and grace. Borin’s future bride's health was a main factor in he should be looking for, the Queen cautioned him that he needed a bride that could bring healthy sons into the world so he would never feel the pain that she did.
Any type of defect or imperfection wasn't to be tolerated for his future Queen. With desperation in her voice his mother cautioned him that an imperfect bride would lead to deformed and sickly children. That was the one and only lessoned that she drilled into his head from the time he could talk, it was something she feared would happen to any future children he might have.
Now that the King and Queen had an heir, the King turned his focused solely on his kingdom. The loss of Arryn scarred the King more than anyone knew. The Queen told Borin from the moment the nurses put Arryn in his arms he never felt a love like that before. It pained him greatly to see his son in pain and not be able to do anything thing about it. Upon Borin's birth the King promised himself that he would not be overly attached to his son because if life has taught him anything, is that life is fleeting. He would no longer chain his hope to the fragility of life.
The King was always distant, he never raised his voice or treated Borin harshly, but any warmth and love were never shown to him. The Queen on the other hand treated him as a gift. Forever doting on him and giving everything, he ever wanted. One thing Borin wished for more than anything was a sibling, someone he could play with and share his secrets too. Not long after his fifth birthday he was granted his wish, Prince Fendrel Greye Cousland was born. The Queen, of course doted on the new Prince as well, never jealous Borin welcomed his brother every chance he could.
When Borin was little he would sneak into his brother's nursery and do things to make him laugh like making funny faces or tickling his feet. He always loved the sound of his laugh it always comforted him in a way that his mother never could. It was as if his laugh told him it was going to be alright no matter what. Borin doted on his little brother, there was a day that passed that Borin wasn’t' spending time with Fendrel.
As they grew from children to men their relationship changed drastically throughout the years. Borin always enjoy meeting people and hearing the stories they had to tell and so many subjects at court sought out his presence. Surround by the citizens of Hyoperia always filled Borin with a sense of companionship with his future subjects. Fendrel on the other hand couldn't seem to not make enemies wherever he went, he had his little minions would terrorize people on his behalf. Many lower nobles with low morals would push their sons to become Fendrel’s courters.
Borin would often try to persuade Fendrel from treating people in this way. As a child Fendrel was kind and gentle, but only if he got his way. If you wouldn't give into him, he would fly into rages that would last for hours. Many times, the royal household could hear his screaming from the nursery from almost all parts of the palace. These tantrums only grew in frequency and so did sense of entitlement and superiority over everyone.
He could never get past being the second son, he coveted the throne more than anything in the world. He would try to gain his father's attention, he was very good at archery and riding. That never seemed to impress their father, the King considered those traits something of a requirement not a talent. Fendrel made for a terrible strategist and an even worse boatman, two essential qualities for any Prince wanting to be King. Any serious physical demands had him frustrated and angry, often when they were being trained in different fighting styles he would cheat.
It got so bad the Sir Elin their master of the sword refused to train him any longer. The King was very angry with Fendrel, for him honor was the only thing a man truly had in this world. Both Princes were expected to be honorable and noble in all things. As the heir, Borin was always in council meetings and tours of their lands and learning everything he needed to rule. Often Fendrel was left out of these meetings and trips after a while he grew to resent both Borin and his father. There was nothing Borin could do to mend their relationship, Fendrel would not allow Borin to make mends on behalf of him and their father. Fendrel no longer sought out Borin’s company. Every word spoken to him from then on was thinly veiled with disgust.
Throughout their teenage years, they would butt heads. Fendrel couldn't reconcile himself to be just a Prince and not the heir. Since he had no responsibilities and wouldn't take any he would often be found drinking and whoring. Often getting in trouble for disrespecting noble families in court. Nothing would stop him from his vices, not the Queen’s pleading nor the anger of the King.
His recklessness seemed to double on the news of their parent's death, nothing was off limits to him now. At Borin’s coronation, Fendrel got so drunk and lewd he had to be escorted out by the King’s guard. It seemed that even though Borin was now King, he could not reign in his brother’s behavior and the noble lords suffered because of it. Lord Rutherfort was one of the nobles that experienced this firsthand. Rutherfort always had ambition to improve his place in the world every chance he could, one of these goals was for his daughter to become the King’s bride.
On learning of Rutherfort's effort to make his daughter the future Queen, Fendrel seduced the young lady then bragged to court about his exploits. It amused Fendrel that he could do whatever he wanted to his brother’s closest advisor and nothing would be done to punish him. No matter how many people he bragged about having Rutherfort’s daughter any way he wanted. Lord Rutherfort was furious, he immediately sought an audience with Borin, he wanted retribution. He called for Fendrel to banished and never be allowed to return to court. He wanted Borin to make his brother pay a huge sum of gold and lands to make up for sullying his daughter and making her un able to marry.
Borin was put in a tough position, Lord Rutherfort is a major ally and Borin counted on his support and guidance. On the other hand, Fendrel is his brother and until Borin marries and produces an heir he is next in line for the throne. Borin couldn't banish him so Borin did the next best thing, Borin made him an ambassador to some of their vessel lands.
As an ambassador, he would spend long periods of time away from court where Rutherfort would not be in his company. After some assurances to Rutherfort, and new titles and lands for him to distract himself with seemed to simmer his rage. Borin made Lord Rutherfort’s son part of his small council position that most lords many generations of offerings for the crown before they would be even considered for the council.
Borin was still left with what to do with his brother, a brother who coveted the throne more than anything in the world, his ambition for King was something that plagued his mind many sleepless nights. Was Fendrel a real threat to the crown and if he is, what would Borin do about it?
*********************************************
When Seras last saw this chest, she wondered its origins, it seemed to always be there just beyond her reach. Now that its right in front of her Seras didn't know if she wanted to know what's inside, would what's inside even answer the questions that she has had all her life. Seras’s mother was a stoic woman who never let her emotions get to her. To most she was cold and unfeeling and often that was the woman who raised Seras into the woman she is now. Even though she was hard on Seras she was always there to protect Seras from her father.
She would protect her as best she could from his wraith, oftentimes taking the punishment on herself. Whatever that's in this chest was important enough that her mother had Bear protect the key for so long. Seras must open it, she had to see what her mother left her. The key felt heavy in her hands, turning the key felt like a thousand secrets where about to be unleashed and there was nothing Seras could do about it.
The inside was lined with a thick black velvet that Seras barely felt as she looked through the contents of the chest. Bundles of letters wrapped in black satin ribbon sealed with the De Lion crest filled the top of the chest. Pulling the first bundle out, her mother's handwriting was something Seras hadn't seen in so long. She eagerly tore open the first letter, the pages still smelled of her perfume Seras couldn't keep the smile from her face.
To my daughter,
I do not know the true meaning of love, and your birth did not change that fact. Your father is a vicious man that doesn't have it in his black heart to love anything. Not me, you or his people. The only thing he knows is how to break spirits and how to destroy things. The only reason he married me in the first place was my beauty and youth. He was in for a surprise when all he got from me was my scorn. I never wanted children, I never wanted you.
I defied him at every turn, no matter how cruel he could be, I would never allow him to break me. I never wanted you, my beautiful dangerous thing. From the moment, you were born I became fearful, fearful that you would wilt under the shadow of your father and whatever man he promised you to. Your father was so fearful of his own mortality, he constantly sought an heir to continue his legacy. Sometimes you were my blessing and my curse, I hated you for making me weak.
I couldn't bear to give him the satisfaction of providing him with an heir. After months of bearing him and his attentions I found out I was with child. I made many attempts to end my life, but he wouldn't let me. For the duration of my pregnancy I was confined to my chambers to wait the birth of the would-be Prince.
Hours spent in a pain that I wouldn't wish my sworn enemy, save for my husband. When the midwife laid you in my arms, I felt nothing, I absolutely felt nothing, not to the monster that called himself your father, not the family that abandoned me, not the nation of people who didn't see me no matter how hard they looked.
Since the moment, I heard your cry to my last breath I vowed that I would never let anyone break you like they broke me. For your father got his wish, I could no longer fight against him not when it wasn't just my life that hung in the balance anymore. I may have seemed cold and distant to you, but it paled in comparison with what was to be expected from your father. I had to make you strong no matter what. I will never apologize for making you strong. I may have never wanted you but you came from my womb and you are the only have family I have.
I may have never expressed myself honestly and truthfully with you. I have done my best to prepare you for the road ahead. At times, it seemed that I wanted to break your spirit, all have done is make you strong. Inside this chest, I have left you the tools to take your life into your own hands, I will not have you suffer the same fate as me. Hardened yourself against your enemies and never let anyone make you feel inferior. Love is an illusion that you can ill afford.
You are the future; your name will be remembered because no one has ever seen someone like you. I believe that you can change so much about how the world views you, but you must be strong and brave. This world will try to beat you down if you allow it, I never raised you to back down from a fight and a fight is what is needed for you survive this. I have every faith in you and I know that you will survive because your stronger than I ever was.
Be strong and never bend.
You are Iron & Lace.
Intgrega DeLion
Seras nearly forgot that Bear was still standing in the doorway, she didn't even feel the tears welling up.
"If she hated me so much why did she ever keep me, why did do any of the things she's done."
"Your mother was taught at a young age that her emotions, wants and dreams didn't matter, she never knew how to show love." Bear wouldn't move closer as if she would run if he came closer.
Rising from the floor, Seras stepped closer to him she wanted to feel some comfort. Even though he had been trying to distance himself from being too close to her since the incident in her bedchamber, Bear couldn’t help but bring her into an embrace. It felt like Seras heart was twisting in her chest and there was nothing could be done to stop it.
All her life she always wanted her mother to just once say that she loved her, and she couldn't, no matter how much Seras wanted her too. It made me angry that she couldn't be honest with her at least once. Seras doubted if her mother ever even loved her. How could she when she never knew how to love someone.
Whispering in Seras ear, “Your mother was never shown love, not once in her whole life did, she has someone to love and care for her. Her upbringing was even harsher than yours, the DeLion family was a cold and emotionless family. She didn’t know how to love you so she did the only thing she thought she could to protect you.” The Bear was trying to placate his princess with words that deep down he knows wasn’t true.
"I hate her, I hate that I love her, and I miss her more than anything in the world. She would have known what to do she would have told me what to do," Seras was nearly frantic at this point.
Tightening his arms around her, Bear never saw Seras this upset before. He didn't know the words to comfort her, he didn't know how to make it easier.
"My lady you are the bravest person I know; your mother has done her very best to raise you to be the person you are today. You must not let the past stop you from being in the present," he said smoothing her hair back like he did when she was just a girl and her mother’s cruelty was to much for her.
"All I know is that she spent her whole life being afraid and I refuse to spend another moment being afraid." Sliding out of Bears arms Seras when to put the letters back before she saw something gleaming in the trunk. Reaching down under more letters, something long and heavy was covered in black fabric.
Pulling the object from under the black cloth Seras looked upon beauty in its truest form. In her hand, she held one of the most well-crafted swords she ever seen. The phrase Bring Vengeance Down Upon Them For They Do Not Know Whom They Trespass Against was etched in the blade of the sword. Those were the words of her mother's family, words that her family held most important.
Under the sword was a painting of aged lion sitting proudly upon a rock, it was one of her mother’s most prized possession. It always seemed to her that the lion was looking back on his past with contentment, he was accepting his mortality with maturity and wisdom. She always hoped that someday she could accept her fate with that same determined strength. Underneath the painting was the same words that now stared back at her, it seems that her mother wanted her to forge a legacy of her own.
In Arcadian customs, each King either passes down or creates a legacy for their sons. These swords or legacies were crafted for each Prince to not only defend their lands from their enemies but to protect the innocent from harm. Seras’s mother put herself in danger by having this word made for her. If her father found out he wouldn't have let this slight to his honor as a King and man go unpunished. Since her mother was no longer here, Seras would have taken the full force of his anger.
Not only had her mother denied him his heir she made Seras the Prince he always wanted. There was no better sword seen crafted in Arcadia such as this one. The weight of it felt familiar in her hand like lifting one’s own limb or raising a cup of ale to a friend. It is both comforting and thrilling at the same time.
Although she hadn't lifted a sword in the months since she’s had been in Hyoperia, her hands instinctively knew how to hold and test its balance. A sudden calm came over her, the letter and its contents nearly forgotten. All Seras could think and see was her sword, a sword crafted for her will. The first ever made for her hand alone.
"The time for tears is over my Bear, its time accepted my fate. I will no longer allow Borin or any man tell me how to live any longer. Now I live for me, I refuse to live in this limbo any longer. I’ll seek an audience with the King and demand back my dowry I can longer wait for someone to set me free, I must free myself once and for or all."
By the time, Seras finished her impromptu speech her hands where shaking and her chest heaved in excitement. For the first time, Seras felt that she was finally in control and nothing was coming in between her and freedom.
The Bear stood staring at Seras as if seeing her for the first, she had never let anything get her so passionate. With a smile lighting up his eyes and his face brightening up he replied in his typical fashion.
"The King can live a thousand lives and he still wouldn't never be prepared for what is coming his way.
