Summary:

Lynne and Saul had been married for 25 years when he committed the ultimate betrayal. Lynne attempts forgiveness, but memories from her past make it hard to do that.  She loves Saul, but will she ever be able to trust him enough to take him back?  And when a new man enters her life, will she even WANT to?

This is a new version of the story I started earlier this month. In a comedy of errors I deleted the original version from my hard drive AND The Chamber.  I was depressed for a minute, but took it as an opportunity to re-work the story.  So here is the new, and hopefully improved, story.

When Caleb, heir of the four and alpha of his pack, attends a party celebrating his twin deltas’ birthday, he doesn't anticipate finding Luna’s greatest gift: his mate, Ava-Rain. Immediately consumed with curiosity and undeniable interest, he manages to make his presence known to her, but their introduction is kept brief. To reject one’s mate is to reject Luna herself, and that is exactly what Caleb intends to do. Not because he wants to but because he has to. But will he be able to stay away in order to ensure both her and his pack’s safety, or will their unbreakable connection lure him back and add even more trouble into the mix?

Title: Chapter 22: 16 - 'If this is to end in fire, then we should all burn together. . .'

Caleb was awesome except he wondered where the same voice that helped him save Ava-Rain was when he tried to save Emmy Grace. So she is still an obstacle between Caleb and Ava-Rain. The voice he heard to help Ava-Rain is because she is Luna's gift to Caleb, his true other half. Yet Caleb still hangs onto Emmy Grace, which is not good in the face of Ava-Rain's continued feelings of inadequacy. I wonder how they will conquer the ghost between them? Well here's another reason to keep reading!

Author's Response:

Caleb's always going to be the type of guy that when he feels, he feels deeply, no matter the emotion. And I love that about him. He's always going to feel guilty for not being able to protect & save Emmy Grace, so if that makes her an obstacle, then it will probably be one that might prove difficult for our Alpha pair to overcome easily or quickly. But they've both just learned that they're stronger together than they are individually, so conquering Emmy Grace's ghost may not be easy, but it can be done if they're willing to do it together. As long as Caleb stops believing that Emmy Grace is his burden to carry alone & Ava-Rain stops using Emmy Grace as an excuse to question or doubt her role in her mate's life/world.

Thanks so much for leaving yet another lovely review, jahchannah! I so appreciate it! :)

Title: Chapter 3: 2 - 'Just close your eyes, the sun is going down. . .'

Did Kane's wolf take over and find his mate Ava-Rain?  I'm interested to find out.

Author's Response:

Now that would definitely make things interesting if the wolf turns out to be Kane!

Title: Chapter 2: 1 - 'I don't care, party anywhere, I'm broke, man, possibly beyond repair.'

So far I like this story.  Many werewolf stories seem to be about a dominating Alpha claiming his mate and she fights against that.  This story isn't follwing that pattern yet, so I'm excited to follow along and read as it develops.

Author's Response:

I'm glad you're enjoying Alpha so far, jahchannah! I really, really, REALLY wanted this story to stray from the typical patterns found in many werewolf stories. Caleb's not going to be the typical 'alpha' and Ava-Rain is definitely not going to be the typical 'reluctant & indecisive [human] mate'. It just wouldn't work for this particular story.

Thanks so much for reading & for taking the time to review! I'm so grateful to have you riding along on this journey with me. :)

Good story!  I am wondering to whom Caleb made his promise and look forward to reading more.

Author's Response:

Thank you! Let's just say that the girl from Caleb's dream/memory was somebody REALLY important to him, and there's a HUGE reason why he's so determined to keep that memory buried.

Title: Chapter 22: 16 - 'If this is to end in fire, then we should all burn together. . .'

You are amazing!  You are brilliant! Talk about a powerful ending to a cliffhanger, you hit it out of the park! That was the most amazing chapter of the best both supernatural and werewolf story I have ever read!  Ava-Rain is Caleb's strength just as he is hers.  Through Ava-Rain Caleb was finally able to wield the power of the 4 in perfect balance to revive Ava-Rain. Only his mate had the ability to push him to do what he needed for her and for himself.  Clearly only with and through Ava-Rain will Caleb be the Alpha he was meant to be. Caleb thought the power of the 4 brought only through destruction but only through destruction of the old can construction of the new begin.  There is a time to destroy and a time to build...Balance is key...Ava-Rain balances Caleb...this power is the real truth of mates/soulmates...I was sad to see that she thought she failed because as I watched Caleb save her, I knew she, too, was saving him and helping to rebuild him to be a powerful Alpha...so Caleb's response to Ava-Rain thinking she failed was perfect...unfortunately, I don't think she believes him...our poor girl will learn in time...as for you Twelv20One...you so rock...

Author's Response:

Thank you so much, jahchannah! This chapter was one of the harder ones to write—I wasn't 100% satisfied with it, but had already re-written it so many times that I had to convince myself to stop—so for you to consider it the 'most amazing' chapter of Alpha thus far just totally blows my mind! Caleb & Ava-Rain really are a true alpha pair, & I loved that I finally got to 'show' that. Ava-Rain is the 'light' to Caleb's 'darkness', but he's also the 'light' to her 'darkness' & as the story & their relationship progresses, we'll definitely see how accurate that is. . .

As always, your reviews are so on point & I absolutely love & appreciate them! Thank you so very much for reading & I'm so happy to know that you enjoyed it! You rock even more! :)

This book is excellent!  It's so well written.  As a werewolf story I can't say that it's different but you are such a good writer which makes this book so good.

Author's Response:

Title: Chapter 10: 7 - 'Looking at all or nothing, babe, it's you & I. . .'

I really like this book! It's well written with an original plot.  Since Caleb is heir of the four is he the ultimate leader that will unite the four as one?

I figured the girl from Caleb's past was a former love but not his mate.  Maybe he thought he would not find his mate and started a relationship that seems to have fallen apart before Ava.  He needs to tell her about it at some point.  If she finds out any other way, problems may arise.

What's up with Ava's awful Grandma?  I'd like to know more about her reasons for being so cold to Ava though we do have a bit of history.  I think that the lack of love from her Grandma helped Ava to accept Caleb as her mate.  She was happy to finally be really and truly wanted with the possiblity of being loved forever.   Okay, I have said enough but I so look forward to updates on this book and will follow to the end.  You rock!

Author's Response:

Thank you! That's a VERY good question about Caleb. Being an heir of the four is going to prove to be a REALLY big deal & I've got HUGE plans for Caleb.

There are a few reasons as to why Caleb started a relationship with this particular girl from his past, reasons that Caleb himself may not even understand. At this point, telling Ava-Rain is the last thing on his mind, but we all know that secrets hidden in the dark with always come to light.

Couldn't agree with you more about Ava-Rain accepting Caleb being a result of her grandmother's lack of love. He's offering Ava-Rain all of the things that her grandmother never did. It was a huge risk on Ava-Rain's part, but what did she have to lose?

Thanks so much for your continued interest in this story, jahchannah, & I'm so happy that you're willing to follow me on this journey to the end! It really, REALLY means a lot to me! Thanks for your review! :)

This book is really good. I want to see how Caleb makes Ava-Rain suffer to see how it also affects him. They will strengthen each other, but she will bring his existence out of hiding. It's what I think will happen, but I'm excited to see it play out.

Author's Response:

THANK YOU!

You're absolutely spot on; Caleb & Ava-Rain will definitely strengthen each other in so many ways & his existence will most definitely be brought to light despite all of the forces/people that are working hard to ensure that it doesn't.

Title: Chapter 13: 9 (2) - 'Your rescue, my undo; I'm not the one to save you. . .'

Luna does not make mistakes in pairing mates so she has a purpose in pairing Caleb with Ava-Rain. It can already be glimpsed in watching her bring peace in her dealing with the twins. Ava-Rain possesses a strength and a connection to the supernatural world of which even she is unaware. Like other readers, I think she has a connection to the hunters, especially since she seems to fit so co.fortably in Caleb's world. Perhaps she is a human heir of the four and with Caleb will help to restore balance to their world.  This werewolf story is definitely unique and I love it!

Author's Response:

You are so right! Luna definitely does not make mistakes & there is a reason why Ava-Rain & Caleb were paired together as mates. A HUGE reason why she was deemed fit to enter this new world. I'm absolutely loving the reccuring theory that Ava-Rain may be connected to the hunters or a human heir of the four. But do you think she's badass enough to be a hunter? And if she's a human heir of the four, is she an heir of 'good' or an heir of 'evil'? Or maybe she's just a plain old human, lol.

As always, I really appreciate you taking the time to read this story & share your thoughts, jahchannah! Thank you! :)

Title: Chapter 14: 10 (1) - 'Come raise the dead, I'm dreaming of the end. . .'

The death of Ava-Rain in her dream, I think is the old, insecure, fearful girl. Morphing to the beautiful and strong Alpha female will be through trial by fire and the painful shedding of old skin.  Transformation is not easy, but can be gut wrenchingly difficult. That's what I see, anyways. Caleb telling her what she wants to know would be easy. Becoming who he absolutely needs is the challenge. I love this book. So original!

Author's Response:

LOVE your analysis of Ava-Rain's dream, jahchannah! There will definitely be a transformation that Ava-Rain will undergo. It won't be easy & it may be one that she will be forced to endure, just like in her dream.

As always, your continued support means a lot! Thank you so much for reading & for your review! Originiality is super important in every story to avoid cliches, so I'm super happy that this story isn't falling into an unoriginal storyline. :)

Title: Chapter 15: 10 (2) - '. . .hallucinate the tables are turning. . .'

This book is sooo good!  I love Ava-Rain's giving and forgiving spirit.  She will be so hurt by Jennifer's betrayal but at the same time she mentioned that her friendship with Jennifer was somewhat one-sided in that Jennifer always thought about Jennifer and friends were there to support that habit.  I actually don't understand her friendship with Jennifer and would kick the girl to the curb anyway.  Jennifer is likely being used by the purebloods and has no real idea that she is betraying Ava-Rain.  She hasn't been described as a deep enough thinker to actually be knowledgable about werewolves, but I could be wrong. Still, who knows what type of bull was fed to Jennifer to get her cooperation?

Author's Response:

Thank you!!

Ava-Rain will totally be devasted by Jennifer's betrayal for sure! Jennifer is one of those friends that sometimes tends to put her own needs above everybody else's needs, but at the same time, she knows when to stop pushing Kasey & Ava-Rain past their limits to avoid being kicked to the curb. She's not a horrible person, although it may seem that way thus far, but I'm a firm believer that 'horrible' characters always have a reason for being horrible; it's such a pet peeve of mine when characters aren't fleshed out & are created to be 'villainous' without any real reason or just for the sake of drama. Which is why, of course, there's a deeper reason why all three are still friends & a reason why Jennifer is working with the pure bloods.

Thanks so much for reading & for your review, jahchannah! :)

Title: Chapter 17: 12 - 'Say goodbye, as we dance with the Devil tonight.'

Hey Gurl!  I would rank this story as #1 among my favorites if I could.  I reread the chapters several times just to keep my fix going!  This story is Da-Bomb!  You just rock!!!

Ava-Rain has me so mad that I had to calm down and review again.  Declan told her she was too trusting and now she understands the truth to that statement. Unfortunately, the truth comes with the harm her trusting Jennifer has brought to Declan.  If Ava-Rain thought she only needed to look in Jennifer's eyes to know the truth, why didn't they plan to meet in a more public place that was safe?  She placed her relationship with Jennifer over her own safety, the safety of her pack and even her mate.  She just learned a difficult lesson but the cost was too high.  Though she has been friends with Jennifer a long time, that does not excuse her not taking the precautions to better protect herself and Declan.  I don't even understand the reason for doing something so stupid.  Caleb is going to be so mad at her but I am sure anything he says will not compare to the internal beating Ava-Rain will give herself over what happened to Declan.  She is horrified that her actions have cost so much but I don't think she'll make this mistake again.  I can't wait for the next update!  Brilliant!

Author's Response:

Hey, jahchannah! Aww, thank you so much! That is such an honour, especially since there are so many wonderful stories on this site! Lol, have I turned you into an Alpha fiend? If so, I'll try my best not to deprive you of your fix for too long! ;)

LOL @ you having to review again! Dang, Ava-Rain really pissed you off, didn't she? Well, you're completely justified in your anger. I'm actually sooo extremely happy that she made you mad! I always battled with this chapter because I wasn't sure how readers would feel about it. I wanted to show a side of Ava-Rain that hasn't really been revealed before. A selfish, stupid & naive side of her that would further reveal her imperfections, but I just didn't want it to come off as 'out of character' because she's always been the type of character that was capable of doing what she did in this chapter.

As for her reasons for doing something so stupid, she's still holding onto this belief that she can maintain a balance between these two worlds-refusing to accept that the Jennifer from 'her world' may not be the same Jennifer in this 'new world'-but this chapter proved that she obviously can't & that she was naive to think that she could. And, like you said, she just learned a difficult lesson that may have ended up costing her Declan's life & she has to live with that.

Caleb is going to flip, I guarantee that! And these events might very well trigger past emotions that may make it extremely difficult for him to forgive her. Our girl truly did make a mess of things.

As always, thank you so, so much for reading & for taking the time to leave this amazing review, jahchannah! So glad that you enjoyed this chapter! And, again, THANK YOU for favouriting!! :)

Title: Chapter 1: Cast

Ok gurl, I'm thinking about this story to much!  Shows how much I love it!

I'm just thinking that Ava-Rain's actions may have also exposed the pack...didn't Caleb say they weren't supposed to know he even existed?  One reason Kane told Caleb not to claim his mate was the possibility of them being exposed (correct me if I am wrong)...maybe if Ava-Rain was more in the loop she would have acted differently, but Caleb did clearly ask her to stay away from Jennifer until they had more information.

Clearly Ava-Rain is clueless to understand how her actions could harm the pack...it's like now the pure-bloods have confirmation of their existence...if I am wrong, please let me know...but if I am right, then Caleb will definitely have a hard time forgiving her because she gave no consideration to what was really at stake...Ava-Rain was betrayed by Jennifer but in return Ava-Rain actually unintentionally betrayed Caleb and the pack...bummer...I don't know how their relationship will be repaired now but you are brilliant so you can do it...can't wait to see how...

Author's Response:

You are totally & completely, 100% correct! Ava-Rain's careless actions have just exposed the pack to the pure bloods, which was the ONE THING that Caleb & his pack could not afford to happen, but her actions ALSO exposed herself. The pure bloods now know about the pack but it's too early to tell if they know anything specifically about Caleb. They didn't want him, they didn't want Declan, whom was pretty much just collateral damage, they wanted Ava-Rain & she realized that. And there's a HUGE reason why they went to such lengths to draw Ava-Rain out specifically, so keep that in mind!

Totally agree with you about Ava-Rain not being in the loop, because as much as Caleb is trying to protect her & keep her safe by not sharing everything with her, she isn't fully able to understand the severity of the issues that Caleb & the pack have been facing. He's explained to her the who, what, where, when & why's of his world, he's especially emphasized the WHYs—why his existence can't be brought to light, why his pack can't be exposed, why he was reluctant to even claim her as his mate—but she's only able to understand it on a 'human' level, if that makes sense, which I'm sure it doesn't, lol. She hasn't really been exposed to the dark, cold & cruel realities of his world until now & I'm positive that NOW she'll finally get it. It just sucks because she had to, like you stated, unintentionally betray Caleb & the pack in order to come to that realization.

This will definitely put a strain on their relationship & Caleb will definitely be pissed at her but this situation will force him to take a good look at himself & accept that he's not entirely blameless.

*sighs* These two stress me out far too much, but I can't help but love them.

Thanks so much for taking the time to review again, jahchannah! You are so extremely perceptive & I so appreciate you sharing your thoughts with me! And I apologize if this response was WAY too long, lol! :)

Title: Chapter 18: 13 (1) - 'And my heart is a hollow plain, for the Devil to dance again. . .'

Ava-Rain will be devastated! Caleb was to be the first person who really belonged to her, yet he gave himself to another... our girl can't seem to win...she just wants to know true, deep and abiding love and acceptance that should come from your mate...but her mate already gave his away...and Ava-Rain is still 2nd best...or maybe not good enough at all...Caleb does not know her history, so he doesn't understand the pain his rejection is causing and will only be amplified by the truth...he doesn't deserve her...deep down he doesn't think he does...Ava-Rain has to reach deep within and find her power, so Caleb will know that he can only be a truly powerful Alpha with his true other half by his side...he has to allow Ava-Rain to complete him...I so love this story...I was so happy to see this update...you so rock!

Author's Response:

She will most definitely be devastated! This revelation will definitely not do her insecurities any favours, that's for sure.

Caleb really, REALLY loved Emmy Grace & if she had not died, they'd be mated right now. Talk about complicated. I don't know how Ava-Rain is going to handle that. Like you said, Caleb isn't fully aware of Ava-Rain's history, so he has absolutely no clue as to how this truth will impact Ava-Rain. She's been rejected by the one person that was supposed to love her, and now this truth will only reinforce her beliefs that she doesn't deserve love. That she's second best or not good enough at all, like you stated.

i love that you said that deep down he doesn't think that he deserves her because you're right. From the moment they met, he knew he didn't deserve her & now we sort of have a better understanding as to why he felt that way.

They both need to let each other in. Up until this point, they've both had a few walls up to keep the other out of certain aspects of themselves that they didn't want to reveal to the other. But that's not going to continue to work for the two of them. They are each other's completion & they can't become whole until they're willing to give in to each other completely. Caleb can't become the alpha he was meant to become without allowing Ava-Rain in fully, & she can't become the 'powerful' person she was meant to become without believing in her strength & accepting that it's there deep inside of her first.

I told you these two stress me out way too much, lol.

Sorry for taking so long to get this posted but your e-mail definitely pushed me to get it out & I truly appreciated it! Title: Chapter 21: 15 - 'Do you want me for my body? Do you want me for my brain?'

Wow, I thought I already had mad love for Alpha but I just got a major increase with this chapter!  Ava-Rain is definitely stronger and smarter than anyone in the pack gives credit because she figured out how to keep her brain from short circuiting, which to me finally gave us a glimpse of the Alpha female that is within her. Considering her life has been filled with tragedy and hardship, her mind is incredibly strong because many a young woman would have cracked under her circumstances. Ava-Rain has spent her life feeling unloved yet she is full of love and can open herself up to make sacrifices for her loved ones.  She's learning who she is and I think there is something about her that makes her Caleb's ideal mate but that's just me speculating...the way she figured that holding onto his hatred would keep her from losing herself is a sure sign that she is special and the rest of the pack is about to find that out too...I love you for updating earlier!  You so rock and are so awesome especially for gracing us with such an incredible chapter!  I can even forgive you for leaving me with a cliffhanger...I also wanted to mention from the last chapter that Caleb finally and actually apologized to Ava-Rain so our girl is not the only one growing and finding strength in this relationship...so excited for the next update!  On and BTW, in my opinion Angelie does not hold a candle to the beauty that is Ava-Rain.  That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Author's Response:

YAY! I'm so glad that you ejoyed this chapter, jahchannah, because I so loved writing it! I love showing Ava-Rain's growth because she's come such a long way from the girl she was in the beginning to the girl that she's becoming now. She really is strong, & that strength is drawn from a lot of the things in her life that once made her weak.

Sidenote, I know sometimes female characters are expected (not necessarily by my readers, but female readers in general) to be able to rise up on their own two feet without help & not allow a man to define & empower them. But can I just say that [after reading over some past reviews] I so love & appreciate that you've always acknowledged that Ava-Rain can't become who she's meant to be without Caleb and never made that seem like such a bad thing. They're both each other's biggest weakness, which also makes them each other's greatest strength & you've always seen that. Makes me feel like I'm actually doing something right, so for that, I thank you.

Glad you enjoyed this sooner than expected update, too! And, I know, cliffhangers totally & completely suck. Sorry! As for Angelie & Ava-Rain, I completely agree! Thanks so much for reading & for your fantastic review, jahchannah! Really, really, REALLY means a lot! :)

Title: Chapter 1: Cast

I'm at it again...I'm so glad Declan's healing, but Ava-Rain, though physically fine, is heart broken...family is everything to her too, which is why she was willing to give Jennifer the benefit of the doubt instead of throwing away so many years as friends, family...Jennifer was Ava-Rain's family so our girl is crushed on several fronts...betrayed by family...then endangering family as a result...and finally enduring the deep disappointment of her mate in her actions...Ava-Rain was clinging to Jennifer out of her fear of being alone...Caleb is not enough to assuage that fear and when she learns he had chosen another before her as mate...ah, what will become of our girl...she has to find herself and Caleb needs to let go of the past to really see Luna's gift... I'll stop now but story just gets to me...

Author's Response:

This review is sooo on point, I LOVE it!!

I totally understood why everybody was so mad at Ava-Rain for what she did in the last chapter, but I think you're the only reader that has taken the time to dig a little deeper to realize the motivation and reasoning behind her actions! Jennifer is/was family to Ava-Rain. They've known each other for practically their entire lives. Despite Caleb & the pack's suspicions, there was absolutely no way that Ava-Rain was NOT going to give Jennifer the benefit of the doubt. That's what friends do. Her grandmother, Kasey (the Helland family) & Jennifer were the only three links that kept Ava-Rain connected to 'her world'. Her grandmother kicked her out, Kasey's been absent, & Jennifer was the only person she had left &, like you said, she clung to Jennifer out of fear of being alone. The way she went about things was completely wrong, but I get why she did what she did & can we really fault her for being human? But, then again, I'm biased so. . .lol

As for Caleb, he most definitely needs to let go of the past & he won't be able to until he makes the choice to finally face his demons once and for all. And he won't be able to do that until he accepts that the cost of laying Emmy Grace to rest will probably be breaking his true mate's heart by finally sharing the truth with her. :(

Thank you so much for taking the time to share some more of your thoughts with me, jahchannah! I so love & enjoy reading your insight of this story & these characters! :)

Title: Chapter 19: 13 (2) - 'If we're going to die, bury us alive. . .'

Wow, that chapter was so emotionally heavy...so beautifully written...gave me chills...Caleb really bared his soul to Ava-Rain and our girl stood strong...she's amazing in her strength...instead of hating Caleb, instead of anger, which he expected, she reached out to him to give comfort, strength...love...she loves him in the true sense of the word because she was able to put aside her pride and her feelings of maybe jealousy and even inadequacy to hold her mate and be his rock...Ava-Rain is a true Luna and if anyone truly knows that family is everything her response to Caleb shows that she does...you just rocked this chapter...but then you are rocking this whole book and I am just excited for the next update...I'm not going to let you rest until it's done because it's so brilliant...

Author's Response:

I'm really glad that you enjoyed this chapter, jahchannah! It was super emotional to write & I'm always doubtful of my capabilities of writing such emotionally charged scenes. You never now if readers will feel what you're trying to get them to feel, but I'm so beyond happy that you did. *breathes a sigh of relief*

These two definitely needed this breakthrough. I think our girl did a great job of proving how strong she can be, not just for herself but for Caleb in one of his darkest moments. His revelation couldn't have been easy for Ava-Rain, but, like you said, she put aside her pride & her feelings to be what she needed to be for him.

As always, I'm just so grateful & honoured that you took a chance on this story & for you to call it brilliant is such a HUGE compliment! So, thank you! And I'm going to hold you to that promise because you guys are my biggest motivators! So as long as you guys want this story to be told, I'll continue updating. Thank you so much for reading & for this lovely review, jahchannah! :)
