Title: Chapter 16 Confrontation and Conflict

He had gramma a told!!!  I HATE when black women say they have Native American or Asian blood in them apropos of nothing.  What a cop out. I get asked frequently what I'm "mixed with". My dead pan answer is always I'm mixed with black and black. I mean really.  I HEART this chapter!

How do you say mean old bitch in choctaw? However you say, I like it better in english. Mean Old Bitch! Matteson hit the nail on the head by stating she was jealous of Valysia. And that skank of all skank Tameka, what can you say? I love the love between Matt and Val, keep them together please. Help them fight the family bigotry together. Make them strong and well loved!

It good Mat was there for Val when they went to see her grandmother. She is a crazy woman for saying such hateful things towards her grand ma and Val should know that he loves her and she is pretty. thank for the update.

I just had to chime in here...you nailed this chapter...I see now why Val doesn't visit her grandmother...why are some black people so colorstruck...she's a depicable old woman and I'm so glad that Matheson put her in her place...but also love the support he gave Val to realize that her problem went much deeper because she lost her son and Val was a constant reminder of how she lost him to Rachel...loved it!!!

I can't believe how spiteful her other grandmother is...I am glad that Matheson was there with Val to deal with the mean old biddy.  She should be a shamed of herself for being so ignorant.  Thanks

Title: Chapter 16 Confrontation and Conflict

This story is deep. Examining stereotypes from both sides is really brillant. And there are so many.

Emily, what can I say... she might be a little special, but damn, I really like her. She gets the job done. She and Gregory are a trip. She still has handcuffs!!! And isn't afraid to use them. She does seem a little obsessive over Mavis, but it seems she's that way about anyone she loves. I guess Mavis was Emily's one constant in her rollercoaster of a life.

There are no words for Val's other grandmother. Let's hope that is the last Val will EVER have to see her and that stupid bitch of a cousin. Val needs to limit exposure to the people who damaged and continue to try and damage her spirit. Matheson was beyond wonderful in dealing with those folks and protecting Val. His ministering to her afterwards has been the highlight of the story for me. He made her see what he sees. A woman that is beautiful inside which shows itself on the outside.

You are rocking this story.

btw, Eric Ripert as Matheson makes me all gushy. One of my favourite chefs and not just because of his excelling at his craft. But that man is fione.

I'm glad Matheson made Val see what her grandma has been doing! I hope she believes it; and believes that money has something to do with this also. Why, after all this time, and the treatment they've shown her, do they now need to see her so desperately? Val claims she's smart, so I hope she see at least that much! She'd be a fool not to!

She's marrying an heir and thats not missed on them. They didn't want anything to do with her before, keep it that way! She's had to live without them in her life, nothing has changed really. That little display should tell her that. They dont want anything to do with her, and they MOST certainly dont want anyone with Matheson's means looking at her twice! They think they deserve that kind of attention, if its going to be anyone! This should be clear to her because they couldn't be more transparent if they tried! No, they are comfortable with her thinking less of herself, and that they are definitely better than her! Ughh!

They need to do something about that skank Tameka. Val needs to watch that closely.

I love how honest Matheson is with her as his partner.

That was hard to read, but that confrontation had to take place.   I hope that Nana and that *itch realize that they won't be invited to the wedding.  There is definitely no love lost there.  Matheson and Val make a very beautiful couple.  I can't wait to read more.

Title: Chapter 16 Confrontation and Conflict

Is grams's name Evelyn or Ethel? She was introduced as Ethel but referred to as Evelyn a few times in the conversation.

As a "light skinned" black woman, I embrace my blackness. My niece refers to me as yellow and we never had a discussion about color or race. She was when she insisted that she was brown, her dad is black, and I am yellow. I dont understand where she got it from but it wasn't from the adults.

I knew a girl in college who was half black, darker than me, but because she had "good" hair she would state she wasn't black.

Great message in this update!

Author's Response:

Thanks for catching my error.  Grandma's name should be Ethel.
