Title: Chapter 6: Rain
O-kay. Now I'm side-eyeing Ian even more than I already was. From the beginning I thought he should be a little more open with MJ about his personal situation and his expectations of her, but after her confession, he should at least have told her that he has something he needed to share, but that he didn't think she was ready yet...or some other comment/declaration to let her know that he has something of significance to tell her, that he actually wants to tell her but that he needs some time.
MJ has asked him not to keep things from her and not to lie to her and right now he is doing both! On the other hand, as wary as she seems to be, I'm a little surprised that MJ didn't pick up on the fact that Ian offered no assurances to her about either point. When she asked him not to keep things from her his reply was: “Trust me, please just trust me.”. (Which seems to be the standard response of people who are hiding things. I find his request a bit ironic since Ian is showing little to no trust in MJ.) And after her confession of what happened with her first love, when MJ outright pleads for Ian not to lie to her, again he offers no promise of truthfulness. The only thing he can offer is to declare his reason for being with her: “I am in this for you.” ... “I am this for you, MJ.” The implication being that he is not with her as the result of a bet or reason other than his feelings.
But, I wonder if that is completely true. He pursued her due to an initial attraction, but his focus is not only on her and the relationship that is developing between them, but also on satifying some not yet fully revealed desire/plan/need of his lover and his brother.
Given that Kieran doesn't seem to want Ian to have any deep feelings for MJ, or at least no deeper feelings than he has/has had for Ronnie:
Kie knew that his brother loved Ronnie, but Ian had never looked at her the way he looked at MJ. There was a possessiveness in Ian towards MJ that made him slightly wary.
Ronnie could read Kie’s emotions without trying hard and what she saw made her bite her lip. “So you want him to get rid of her?”
He blinked, “No, I don’t know. I just don’t think she’s the right fit for us.
And Ronnie's doubts:
If she were honest with herself, then she would admit her worries aloud. “I’m not sure either.”
I worry for MJ's heart and peace of mind.
Although it is stated that Ronnie and Kieran both want(-ed) Ian to find someone to love, I get the feeling that they imagined someone who would be his 'also' love, not someone who's importance to him would potentially supersede or even replace his feelings for Ronnie.
Be careful MJ, be very careful.
