Patriece was on her bed watching YouTube videos. She was lying on her stomach with her feet swinging in the air. She knew there were more pressing matters to deal with but none of them interested her. Instead she wasted time on hair tutorial videos, all the time wondering which styles to try in her own hair and which styles she should try out on her roommate and best friend.  For a few moments she was blissfully unaware and that reprieve was all that was keeping her sane.

Life for Patriece was getting more and more complicated. She couldn’t put her finger on it but things were changing. Sometimes she would get this feeling she couldn’t explain, in the past it usually happened before a life changing event. She even joked on more than one occasion about being psychic but this time was no joke. Something deep inside of her was putting her in fight or flight mode. Something was coming, this was the first thought she woke up to and the same thought that kept her up late into the night. Every bone in her body told her to run.

Her scientific mind rationalized the information and attributed her out of control emotions to being psyched out about her upcoming exams but another part of her, a part she kept hidden from the world told her all was not right.

She was an artist by nature but her inquisitive mind and driven personality wouldn’t let her pursue that as a full time career, she needed something to challenge her mind and keep her intrigued. However on days like this she wished that she had taken the easy option and gone to art school. There she could have painted away her days in bliss or sang the poetry she wrote. Instead she was stuck with a biochem exam and a zoology course designed to kill her.

Rolling on to her back she slipped off her glasses and pinched the bridge of her nose to dispel the thoughts that were creeping up on her. She craved a drink to take the edge of and to put her in a pleasant high. The solitude that she usually preferred was feeling more like a burden. Her roommate, Laura, was at a baby shower and wasn’t scheduled to be home anytime soon. So she was on her own, with her wayward thoughts. Releasing a groan she swung her legs around and sat up.

Food, food, food, she chanted internally as she made her way to the kitchen. Opening the fridge she stared inside, with a disgusted sigh she slammed the door shut. There was nothing there that interested her.  Instead she had a craving for Chinese food and a night time walk and she was determined to have both.

A quick twirl in the shower and hastily thrown on jeans saw her ready for her night time excursion. However the nagging feeling was back and she was determined to ignore it. She couldn’t quite shake it but she managed to silence it, putting it at the back of her mind. Grabbing her keys, phone and purse she made her way out of the house before she could change her mind.

She was determined to live her life and the silly feeling that she was being watched wasn’t going to stop her.

“That’s her?” Nico said with shock, more than a little disdain and a great deal of disgust. “She’s…….black!!! and…..short!!!! and what’s up with her hair!!!!! It’s green!!!”

Khalid rolled his eyes and ignored the antics of his younger brother. Instead he focused his attention on the woman who was depicted in his Druid watch glass.

He didn’t know what to make of her, she wore strange clothing, had an odd colouration to her skin and to top it off he her hair was green. He could partially understand his brother’s reaction but his was slightly different.

Instead of calling her short the word petite seemed more appropriate. When they stood side by side her head would barely reach the middle of his chest. It was the perfect height in his opinion. He could hold her to his chest with easy, tuck her in the crook of his arm when need be, lean down for a kiss and so much more. Her height appealed to him, it made her appear softer and more delicate. The women of his planet were tall and angular preferring to look as if they were being starved to death. Not her, her body had a fullness to it, that only a man could appreciate.  The strange clothes she wore hugged her body showing the curve of her ass and the swell of her breasts. It took all of him not to reach in and stroke her back, just so he could see her body arch in response.

Shaking his head he cleared his mind and moved on to another detail. Her skin wasn’t black instead it was a dark brown colour, it had the same hue as ground coffee but it looked smooth to the touch and sweet to the taste. It was so unusual that he reached down to stroke his finger against her cheek, she shivered at his touch and that gave him a satisfied feeling he couldn’t explain. The women of his race were pale, they avoided the sun in favour of a hollowed out look, the men tanned easily and had a golden hue to their skin that he prayed she would find appealing.

Never in his life had he seen such a woman and never in his life had he wanted one so badly. Finally he took in her hair. It was a dark shade of green that reminded him of the leaves on the trees in the Narthan forest, a green so dark it could bewitch the senses. It was an odd colour that he couldn’t picture as hair but on her it worked. He wasn’t sure if it was natural or if she had done something to get it that way but he hoped she let it stay. It was uniquely her.

“Oh no. not you too!!!” Nico’s voice was shrill. He couldn’t believe it, another of his brother’s had fallen. The image of the woman in the Druid watch glass had his brother enthralled. He couldn’t see the appeal but by the look on Khalid’s face, he knew his brother could and did.  Nico watched the woman walk along the road, feelings of happiness, loathing and jealousy welled inside of him and they were all at war with each other. On one hand he was happy that his brother had found his soul mate, on the other he loathed the loss of his brother and lastly he was jealous of the future his brother would have, one that would forever be denied to him.

“It will happen for you too. One day you will inherit this glass and when you look inside the woman meant for you will be reflected there.” Khalid’s voice was barely above a whisper and it resonated with all the emotions he was feeling. Looking at his little brother he smiled. “Don’t worry Nico she’s out there, just waiting for you to claim her.”

Even though Nico heard the note of surety that Khalid’s voice held they both knew that Nico’s fate was not that simple. For his brothers to be happy he would have to remain single and miserable. A price he would willingly pay, the expression on each of his brothers faces as they saw there soul mate for the first time would have to keep the shadows at bay. Shaking his head he backed out of the room, his brother was so engrossed that he didn’t hear him leave.

Khalid noted Nico’s absence and then promptly forgot about it. He frowned unsure of how to proceed. This woman would soon mean everything to him but for now she was just a face, granted the most beautiful face he had ever seen, but still just a face. It would be another 3 months before he could approach her and till then he would have to be content to watch her.
